Better to have a Bad Season than being called a NASCAR Bust. That’s the nicest way to put it for Austin Dillon’s Cup career, so far. That’s my only defense I have on Austin. I used to despise him, but I’m just neutral towards him nowadays.
It’s more of an identity thing than anything else. Austin had also run the 3 in his Nationwide and Trucks days, and if I recall correctly, Richard Childress said he would only bring back the 3 for family
One thing they don't bring up about Austin's 2013 Xfinity championship anymore is that he didn't win a single race. But that was because Cup guys mainly Kyle Busch won most of the races. But that was full season points. So, despite not winning a race he was the best Xfinity regular. But people still found it controversial.
I guess the question is if would people find the likes of Jason Leffler and David Ruetimann (who would've won in 09 and 07 if the series points declaration rule stood) controversial. Still, he did Kenseth his way into a championship, so finding that controversial is a bad take from people.
I had the opportunity at the last possible second when we went too the spring Kansas race to meet Austin. I've never been the biggest fan and been a Sr fan since a kid but who wouldn't take an opportunity to meet a driver. Nice guy got a picture. Though I agree with this video.
10 DNFs in one season is unacceptable, no matter how you slice it. I wouldn't really care about him being mid if he weren't driving the 3. He is a disgrace to that number.
Maybe money? Kyle Busch isn’t cheap and Rodden has pretty much been let go from every crew chief position he’s had. If I’m RCR, I’m sizing up Danny Stockman again. He’s got two championships with Austin and they scored 3 poles in cup in 2019, which was their lone cup season together.
You never mentioned the crew chief change with Keith Rodden as Austin Dillon’s crew chief. Kahne fans remember the horror with him as crew chief back in the day😂.
