If we made it this far we are heroes? It's you guys who have put in the effort. We are both seriously impressed with your staying power, dedication, perseverance, endurance, commitment, (pass me a thesaurus and I'll add some more) to the job. Not only that but you both remained cheerful for the camera throughout. Amazing. The stabbing with a paint brush is called stippling by painters. It is slow work and wrecks brushes - as you found out. I don't envy you that task at all. I bet you wish you could have turned the boat over to paint it like a classic car full restoration where the bare body is mounted and rotated to always be in the ideal position for the work being done. I've stripped and repainted the underside of sailboats a few times when I was young, but not as big as your 60 ft boat and most of it can be done while working upright due to the curves of the hulls. Just a suggestion. They say 2 pack epoxy lasts 3 times longer and is better etc. but the prep work if not done from being a new boat is more than a DIY project unless you can rope in an entire team. I note that 'The Narrow Boat That James Built' had to be overplated and viewers chipped in to cover the 10k cost. If you put your plan forward a few months in advance of the event I feel sure that enough of us viewers would chip in for that. I know I'd put a tenner in. If a quarter of your subscribers did likewise it would cover some bits of pit welding and an epoxy paint job. It is better for the canals too - no leaching of bitumen related chemicals into the water. Again though, an epic job well done both of you and Rufus was great too - no whining even with the angle grinder and other tools going.

Really excellent video and very informative. Just had our boat blacked.....last month but handed her over to someone else to do it. I am a wimp. Ok, the brag....she's in excellent condition , the blacker wanted us to see that she's hardly pitted at all , even the base plate. So glad yours is ok...it's a great feeling isn't it?. xx
OK, here in the US we have these crappy (IMO) textured ceilings in our homes. Whenever we have to paint that, we specifically use a roller that looks a little bit like lamb’s wool, just to get in between. Wouldn’t it be easier to use a roller to get into all the pits and other textures caused by it not being blacked in the first place? But most importantly, WELL DONE YOU, BOTH OF YOU. YOU GUYS SHOULD BE REALLYreallyREALLY PROUD OF YOURSELVES. (Yes, I yelled that you!)

I completely get your distress with doing the entire bottom and the monotony of it all. I've only just been diagnosed in my early 50's with ADHD and I've found some tasks in life to be true torture and yet people looked at me like I was over the top in my responses. Goggles: use the ones for nail gun operators: these have two plastic see through walls (double glazing!) and don't mist up. Also I believe two pack (not the rapper!) is sprayed on and lasts 5 years compared to blacking's 2 years.

For welding I’d definitely recommend Clifton Cruisers! They’re about a 30 minute slow cruise from Crick marina I’m a welder myself and am patiently waiting a job to come up there I hold them that highly 😂

We wanted to explore and thought what better place to start than our home country! We were starting the process of getting a mortgage, and it just didn't feel right, so we looked for alternative ways and stumbled upon narrowboat life! 😊
You might remember we helped you through Greenham Lock and Newbury Lock on the K&A? Sitting on our boat now wondering about the baseplate. When we had the boat built in 2022 we asked the builder to black the baseplate and he just laughed, saying that we would only scrape it off anyway and there wasn't any oxygen down there! ooh yay, we remember you.☺️ Oh no 😩 sadly that’s a big myth, and usually one that boat yards say when they don’t have the facilities to do the baseplate, so you don’t go somewhere else. If it was built in 2022 that’s not too bad but we would definitely say get the baseplate done next time you black it 🤞🏻It’s something that frustrates us a lot when people spread that misinformation because we’ve seen first hand that it’s just not true 😩
I think there are two sides to this that should be explored. Some say less oxygen and gets scraped off so worry more about the water line. Others say do the baseplate. I'm not sure either way. Hmm

For welding I’d definitely recommend Clifton Cruisers! They’re about a 30 minute slow cruise from Crick marina I’m a welder myself and am patiently waiting a job to come up there I hold them that highly 😂

We wanted to explore and thought what better place to start than our home country! We were starting the process of getting a mortgage, and it just didn't feel right, so we looked for alternative ways and stumbled upon narrowboat life! 😊

You might remember we helped you through Greenham Lock and Newbury Lock on the K&A? Sitting on our boat now wondering about the baseplate. When we had the boat built in 2022 we asked the builder to black the baseplate and he just laughed, saying that we would only scrape it off anyway and there wasn't any oxygen down there! Oh no 😩 sadly that’s a big myth, and usually one that boat yards say when they don’t have the facilities to do the baseplate, so you don’t go somewhere else. If it was built in 2022 that’s not too bad but we would definitely say get the baseplate done next time you black it 🤞🏻It’s something that frustrates us a lot when people spread that misinformation because we’ve seen first hand that it’s just not true 😩
I think there are two sides to this that should be explored. Some say less oxygen and gets scraped off so worry more about the water line. Others say do the baseplate. I'm not sure either way. Hmm

it’s one of those things that every boater thinks differently. Some people say only do the baseplate every other time, so every 6 years. that sounds like a good balance to us!
But obviously do that’s best for you and your boat 😊
