You guys are hilarious. The “little swords” 😂 are pop rivets. Kitchen sealant won’t keep that frame in place as it’s sealant not adhesive. The no nails would’ve been much better, then use the sealant to seal the edges. And the drill bit is for brick/stone so no good for wood. Throw them away only need wood and metal drill bits on da boat! 😂❤
haha thank you for the tips! 🤣 we tried! 😅💞
@@BoatTime was a brilliant watch. Love you guys. The wife and I are hoping to live aboard a boat soon. 🙏🙏😘
thank you! 😊 oooh good luck to you both!! @@EmmaAndNeil
Drills go in two directions , there is a “key” that is usually attached to the cord that you can change direction, drill a hole into the wood or back the drill out of the hole by changing direction. Annddd use the right drill bit for the surface you’re drilling ie metal or wood as Neil said, and sealant isn’t glue for sure.
@@jillipepper5353 there won't be a key on a cordless drill like that, the chuck is just a twist type to change between the various drill bits or screwdriver bits, and the forward and reverse gears are located just above the trigger. Most cordless drills also have 2 speed settings usually a big switch ontop of the machine, speed 1 for screws, and speed 2 for drilling holes etc. - just so y'all know 😊
Those 'tiny swords' are used by the shower worms to settle disputes.
😂😁😁😀😂😁😁😂😂🤣🤣
🤣🤣🤣 outstanding comment 👏🏻
😂😂😂
lol exactly 😜😂
LOL 😂😂
That was 40 minutes of pure joy and laughter. Amy I know you think the vlog ended on a downer but just look at how far you've both come - you've literally done electrical and plumbing and even managed to sort out the water issue (even if it was a temporary fix). When I do get a boat I'm going to hire you both to sort it all out for me 😊
Thanks Michael! 😂 Yeah you're right! We definitely need to celebrate the victories from this 😊💕 Haha we can't think of anyone better for a boat fit-out 🤣
I am proud of you both for everything you did. Next time I come to the UK, I can give you two days and come and fix everything on your boat.
Amy, for someone with psoriasis you are fearless! ❤❤❤❤ well done. Be proud. And always do the worst jobs first
Thank you so much! I work really hard mentally to not let it bother me. That's lovely of you to say 😊💕💕💕
@BoatTime little star Amy xxx
The 'little swords' are pop rivets. They are used, amongst other things, for pinning sheet of metal to other sheets of metal. You need a rivet gun to use them.
Ahhh, we had no idea haha thank you! 😊 don't think we have a use for them afterall
@BoatTime Love that you referred to drills as 'hole cutting attachements'. Priceless.
The drill you used on the wood was a masonry drill that's why it was taking so long to drill😊
and making a rounded hole.
You two are the most genuine and wonderful couple of vlogers on TH-cam. The warts and all approach to your videos makes your videos so so watchable. It is so easy to laugh along with you as you struggle with some jobs but also to rejoice in your successes. Whatever the future holds promise that you will never loose you sense of humour, optimism and your obvious love for each other. I met you once in 2022 when you called into my marina at Weltonfield Narrowboats near Norton Junction on your way down to winter on the K & A.
The drilling debacle made me laugh. Like watching Laurel and Hardy. My advice? Local hardware store and a cheap set of all-purpose drills. Toss everything else. Your cordless drill seems fine, just be aware of the direction you’re going in. While you’re at it, find out the difference between glue and sealant. It’ll save you a lot of grief later on. Love the channel and stay above water!
I could say rivets like everyone else.. but instead I just wanted to send you both a hug- what a day!
aw thank you that's very kind! It was a stressful day for sure but we learned so much!!
Those little swords obviously mean that you have Borrowers on board 🤣
Oooohhh it all makes sense now 🤣🤣
@@BoatTime 😁
Bet they live on shower worms 😂
th-cam.com/video/phif-gmchcg/w-d-xo.htmlsi=infkioqvfaYG4czL&t=911 that appears to be a domestic 240v consumer unit and MCBs being used on 12v electrics?? If so, it probably isn't giving much protection from fire risk and shouldn't really have passed a safety certificate inspection. It may be worth asking a decent marine electrician to give an opinion on whether it needs changing next time you pass one.
yeah sadly its not great and has caused us all manner of problems! 😬 one of the reasons our horn and headlight keeps breaking.
We have been saving pennies to get it swapped out and have our whole electric system revamped hopefully this year🤞🏻
I’m quite familiar with little swords, been using them for years. I’ve also used masonry drill bits, such as the one you used to drill into your wooden window frames! 😅the main thing is that you learn by your mistakes, like all of us are supposed to do.
Suggestion for new merch. A T-shirt with: “We know this isn’t how you’re supposed to do this…but”
You two are brilliant, I love your have a go attitude! I did giggle at your disclaimers across the bottom of the screen 😂
Thank you so much 😁 glad you enjoyed haha!
I reckon Accumulator on a plank should be an official Doom weapon mesen 🤔......😳
Love you guys so much! What can't you fix with sealant? Stu thinks rivets look like jousting lances for tiny knights of the realm.
Try using a wood bit rather than a masonry bit!!
So sorry to watch you having so much trouble with the accumulator tank, right at the end of the day. What a bummer after you had such a productive day! I expect you have now found this out as it was a few weeks ago when you filmed it, but.... I cringed when Amy used the hot knife to cut the Hep2O water pipe. The problem was, you see, it left a ridge of melted plastic around the end. You need a clean end for these fittings to work, the pipe has to push into an O-ring inside the fitting and the ridges prevented that. Nice save though before bedtime, well done.
That was so painful but so entertaining 😂😂😂
You both did awesome.... i enjoyed that even learned something with the cutting blade . Thanks guys
Hay don’t be so disheartened guys, with no DIY/Plumbing or Electoral knowledge, I think you’ve done rather well considering 🤪 sometimes you’ve just got to put your hands up & say “OK we tried” 👍🏻 ❤️❤️❤️ X X X
Using a concrete drill bit to drill into wood........ worms in the shower pump??? Really? .........Your pump need to be connected to a float to turn it on and off........ OMG I can't watch any more.
I know you guys were deflated in the end, but WELL DONE YOU. Now, will you come to Kansas and replace my shower pan???
Haven’t watched yous for ages… however I really believe you should both feel very proud of yourselves because you try sooo hard to ‘sort’ stuff yourselves… trying new things is big learning… you learn from making mistakes from stuff going ‘Ts up’ as annoying and upsetting as it is it’s great for your innner being and enables development of so many senses… you truly are Ab fab beings and your hearts are in the right place… kindness is evident and when you’re kind you are also in possession of other positive ways of being… thanxxx for sharing and be kind too yourselves… very best wishes Lili x
Bless your hearts. I can so relate to this and how long fixing anything on a narrow boat takes. The sense of excitement when the gulper spurts out the side is something normal people ( by this I mean non narrowboaters 😂) just wouldn’t understand. And then the accumulator. This is something I have ignored hoping it will just do its thing. It scares me so I think you did amazingly. Love you guys x
"Little swords" are pop-rivets. Unless you've also got a rivet tool around, just give them to someone with a home workshop.
Trying to use a ceramic/masonry bit to drill wood... that was painful to watch.
Funniest DIY vid ever, rivets will always be little swords and I’m going glue everything with sealant from now on. You’re the best. Changing the rules of life.. 👍😀
I give an 'A' for effort but I'm getting a brain aneurism watching the patchwork engineering. With access to TH-cam, professional advice is a click away.
Little swords are rivets used to join things like sheet metal etc with a rivet gun thingy. Drill bits didn't work as you were using a masonry bit (one with pokey out bits on end.) And a metal bit has a spikey bit on end, should have still worked the metal one but guess is just you. You want the gold coloured ones normally work. You need something like Sikaflex for your windows etc as with expansion and contraction over summer and winter the sealant will last about 6 months to a year. Everyone's terrible at DIY to begin with but you learn from your mistakes and improve. You's certainly make plenty of them so yo will be DIY experts in no time 🙂
If you had told me that I'd be watching 40 minutes of someone doing DIY, I wouldn't have believed you. But you guys are so entertaining. I laughed, I cried, i got grossed out by shower worms. Most of all I was just cheering for your success. I'm sorry it ended on a sad note, but I'm sure by now you have solved the problem. You two deserve all the happiness in the world. Awesome teamwork! xo
Aw thank you so much 😂 We're so glad we could entertain someone who also doesn't like DIY! Thanks for the kind words! 💕💕
I loved this! Just in process of selling house to buy a NB! I like DIY thankfully 😂
One possible option for sealing the wood-burning stove chimney joints is "exhaust assembly paste", which you can get in most DIY or car parts places. As the name implies, it is designed for sealing up gaps in engine exhaust pipes where one piece has to connect to another, such as where the silencer or catalytic converter joins on. It's got the consistency of soft putty as it comes out of the tube, but after a few hours it sets hard as rock - and the setting time is reduced if you heat it up, so you don't have to wait for it to set before you expose it to heat. Depending on the brand, it is rated for 1000 degrees C, sometimes more, so it should easily tolerate the temperatures a wood burning stove chimney gets to.
Firstly, very well done on getting the Whale gulper plumbed in so well in such a tight space. It is never easy in tight confines - you feel like you can only get one hand in, but need three plus one more to hold a light, one more with a cloth and one more to pass tools. A lack of bones or arms with extra elbows would help. Perhaps a trained octopus is the answer.
Secondly, I would like to suggest that for future projects always start with the one that if something goes wrong it would leave issues that can't be simply left for another day. The plumbing needed to be done in the morning so that you would have had time to go get new fittings from a shop or someone to help if it goes wrong. Sounds defeatist maybe, but it isn't really. Plans need to cover worst case scenario while hoping for the best and needing to pop out and get a couple of extra new fittings is common with plumbing jobs. Having the wrong parts over a number of projects over the years means I now have more than a drawer full of plumbing bits, so I actually manage to do some repairs without needing a trip to the shop first. I think you are using PEX from the look of it. I have never used PEX, it is not a thing here yet, but I see people online either love or hate it - the same goes for Shark. Here it is still glue mostly. I'm not sure which I would prefer. I'm familiar with glue, but you only get one chance each time - once glue is added, that's it - no second chance. It becomes a case of cutting it all out and starting again.
Thirdly - those aluminium things on what look like nails that you asked us to identify - they are pop-rivets. Excellent for holding 2 bits of thin metal together, but they require a rivet gun to use them. A cheap tool, but perhaps don't buy one until such time as you need to use one, and even then you can often borrow one. They are manual, no batteries/power required, so they are easy to master.
While looking at tools, the first drill bit you tried to use - the silver one with what looks like a flat bit let into the end of it - that is only for use in masonry, it is a masonry bit, so unless you need to drill into one of your ballast bricks it is not of any use on a boat really. The second one you used (black one) is a high speed steel bit - for use drilling into metals, but can be used to metals and plastics too. In fact pretty much anything other than masonry. Depending on the grade it might not be any good for stainless steel either - drill bits for stainless steel tend to be expensive because it is a harder metal. By the way, it could be a trick of the video, but it did look like you were trying to drill into that wood with the drill in reverse gear.
I love your willingness to get stuck in and fix/improve stuff. It is a great attitude. From your comments I believe you are watching some online videos on the subject too. Always watch at least 3 different ones because some are terrible and should be taken offline, so with 3 or more you stand a good chance of at least catching one good one. Some DIY stores and and hardware stores have staff who are happy to explain the difference between various tools and why certain things are better than others for whatever you are planning to do. Sometimes some staff know nothing or can't be bothered to help, but if you don't ask you don't know. If you have spare time you can also study the various tools in a DIY store. Take a look at wood drill bits, metal drill bits and masonry drill bits. You will see they have different shaped ends, so then you will be instantly able to identify them. Always handy!
Through all the trials and tribulations you managed to keep filming and maintain positive attitudes. For that you guys rock!
Tim & Jalika, Malaysia
Sikaflex boys n girls. (wood to metal) Use it once and its there forever. The best glue ever invented.
Guys get yourself some sikoflex because that IS a sealer and adhesive and it has the added bonus of being waterproof !.
Those sword things are Pop rivets and they are the correct size and probably the ones that were used for securing your outside window frames into the Sides of your Boat.
Drill bits you definitely don’t need Masonry ones ? Why on earth you have them on a Boat is anyone’s guess ??.
As a construction worker, welder, crane operator for the past 50 years I just have to walk away. It's like you are desecrating all my beliefs and every thing that I am.
Great video as usual. Very entertaining but why not next time do a pretend dry run? Then when people give you tips on the best way to do things you can impress us even more with your fantastic technical ability and know how 😉 or just carry on being great how you are 🤷♂️😜
I haven't watched this video yet but have been watching you guys for a while. Just wanted to ask a question about the toilet situation. We have a cassette toilet. But it absolutely smells horrible when you open it to have a wee.. I did try cleaning it all out ect.. What's the best way to keep smells to a minimum.. What are we doing wrong x
Hey Wes, the "little swords" are what a frog would say alot .... "rivet" , "rivet", "rivet".......
Oh Guys... you did so much!!!!! That was a huge list!!! Well done :D I *Need* a real fire too so I can do that to all my lists when they're done... I might actually do the things on the list then!!!
From comedy to tragedy 😂😢 Absolutely loved this one but so wanted to give you both a hug at the end. Hope you get the water thingy (technical term) sorted really soon.
Well done on your epic repairs. We've got loads of this to look forward to when we get our narrowboat over the summer. I love that boaters aren't afraid to show how things really are when you live aboard a boat. Great video ❤👍🏼
SO proud of you for the whale gulper installation. Your videos are just brilliant. Well done! Love from Bristol 😊
Hope you find a hot milk frother Amy. Maybe Amazon uk would have a low wattage. ❤
As a US. Navy hull technician if I may say would have done somethings different
😅 maybe just a few!
We're sure you would've done a grand job Larry!
😂😂😂 how you guys are still alive is a mystery to me, but I’m very proud of your plumbing work. Yes it didn’t work, but you learned! I would be terrified to even try.
Theres loads of videos on how to use pushfit. Use tool to cut pipe so you don't damage the seal, depending on brand might also need inserts, theres a line that tells you where the pipe needs to be inserted to. A 10 min intro video could've saved you hours. Liked the video tho
The little worms were Silverfish. They love damp conditions and usually come up through people's drains.
Oh that makes sense. Must've crawled through the exit hole 🤢
Great vlog as usual, but that's a Masonry drill and your window is wood and your are clowns.😂😂😂😂
I'm going to blow your minds by letting you know magnets with holes in them for the purpose of being attached by a screw are a thing!
Before using sealant or adhesive, which adhesive should have been used in this case, try cleaning the work site first, as they don't stick to dirt very well.
Wait...
Isn't that the wrong North Carolina shirt??
I thought N.C. State was the college his sister represented?
North Carolina Blue looks good on you tho..
I would bet South Carolina, Garnet And Black would look better, but im a little Bias towards U.S.C. GameCocks.
honestly, we have no idea haha! She just gives us stuff from NC and we wear it because it looks cool haha! 🤣
@BoatTime Well, you're not wrong. It does look good on you.
You should let me send you some GameCock stuff. You'll love it
If you were to look up most realistic portrayal of narrowboat life in the dictionary you would see a picture of Amy and Wes.
That was so frustrating to watch with the drill. They are masonry drills for concrete and bricks not wood 😂😂
You were using the drill in reverse too.
Put a thicker layer of sealant on the temporary flue fix
The reason your drill bits are not working is because they are masonry bits , you need a set of wood bits.😂😂
They Pop rivets use one one Elc Drill one Pop rivet gun and right drill bit
That a Masonry drill bit at 6 min It for making holes in Masonry and stuff like that not wood you can use Metal drill for wood but that one no
They are rivets you would need a rivet gun for holding windows into place and they are used for steel works
Why are you using masonry bits for metal masonry with two little flanges on the end is for brick and stone not metal
I wish I was close to you and I could help you do these things. I think you still need to tidy the pump up a little bit and insulates the electrical connections to the pump better
What’s scaring me is if you have microorganisms living in your bilge they have to be getting in from somewhere which lead me to believe they could be in your main water supply i.e your water tank. Please tell me you’re not drinking from that tank!!!! SCARY!!!! ❤
Its a stainless steel water tank that's fully sealed up so should be okay! But we also have 2 built in water filters before it gets to the tap for drinking 😊
@@BoatTime they could have been in the supply I.e a tap you’ve filled with or living in laying eggs in your hose… there are treatments, I promise I’m not trying to fill you with dread.
#fellownarrowboater
I actually think they might be drain fly larvae. It looked like there was one that flew up when Amy opened up the bilge pump reservoir. They should be all good now that there's no standing water. *fingers crossed*
😬😬hopefully now its changed out its all sorted @@tinythrottle6186
ah we thought the were mosquito larve but that is also a possibility as come to mention it we did occasioanlly have little flies in the bathroom. oh god, dont like thinking about it 🤣 hopefully they have all gone now@@PascalleLepas
Tiny swords are pop rivets... the first drill you used looked like a masonry drill...
But none of that really matters coz we're proud of the pair of you with your DIY skillz!
Haha yep, turns out we definitely weren't using the right thing 😅 but hey, as long as you get the result 🤣 Thanks for the kind words! 💕
Use a little wd-40 on a rag to rub the old adhesive off your paint job
Tiny swords are pop rivet. You need a pop revit gun. Put the tiny sword in a drilled hole to attach two things together
the drill bit you were using with the T piece on the end is a masonary drill and wont drill anything else ,you need drill bits for wood and steel
Oh no that first drill bit is a masonry drill bit, and the second is a metal drill bit 🙈 A wood bit would be easier 😁 xx
Under the bed will give you lovely heat under the bed for winter, not so good for summer
Are you should be so proud 🦚 of your self I am 😊 love and light little ones 🤗 X
Notice some of the wood on your boat needs sealing
Roof boxes and cratch cover
You are using a masonry drill , which you only use on brick 😅😅😅
You pair are so funny at least you tried you got through all your jobs and ended on a low but at least you try and crack on well done wish you all the best
The silver drill bit is a masonry bit only...but can also be used to burn through wood...if needed. ...funny
🤣 it did the job...kinda 🤦🏻♀️
You both did really well. Don't get despondent. Just a couple of minor details to iron out.
Aw thank you, that's really sweet of you to say 😊💕
I’m pretty certain that you’re using a masonry bit on wood 😂
🎉 so so proud of you guys. Electrics scares me.
Enjoy your shower worm free 😜
Plumbing connections like those work on a vacuum basis
💜💙💚
Pop rivets you drill a hole through two sheets of metal then you use a pop rivet gun to pull the rivet through the two sheets of metal to hold both sheets together
You set off my Siri! She wasn’t sure how to respond…!
😂😂 masonry drill trying to drill wood love the Vid at least I know there two people worst than me at DIY.I just use velcro to keep my blinds flush.
🤣 no wonder it didn't make the hole like we thought it would!
Yes, we will happily hold that title of worst DIY'ers haha!
oooh, I think that would work better to be honest, might try it! thank you 😊
I reckon one needs to be a Ninja to live on a narrowboat, the tiny spaces where one as to crouch into or crawl under. 😢
You both are so adaptable, eventually you get the job done. Well done guys.😅
You truly are Ninjas 💚
Haha that's a very good point! 😅 you really have to contort yourself sometimes, but I guess it keeps your muscles moving 😂 thank you for watching! 💕
pop rivets we used to have sord fights at school with them 1970s happy days
at least it wasn't just us who thought they looked like tiny swords haha! ⚔️🤣
Oh wow, you guys did so amazingly well! Look at what you DID accomplish regardless of that last job which was a hard job to do! Well done, you’re both awesome!!! 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
Thank you so much!! You're right, we did well, even if the last one went a bit wonky 🤣🤣💕💕
The little hole drillers are masonary drill bits for stone not wood, normal drills do not have the the bits on the end.
I……..I……..really had to stop watching
I feel so guilty for laughing hysterically at the beginning and middle , then felt so sorry for you at the end. I hope you got it sorted out eventually. I got a new toilet bowl in my house and it took three visits from two different qualified plumbers to fix some spectacular leaks so don't feel too bad about your efforts xxxx
Hahah don't feel guilty, we love being able to look back and laugh 😅💕 oh that's reassuring that even the pros struggle from time to time! x
Now you need to tidy up where pump is, so you an see if later there is a leak, or put a puppy pad down
Drill bits needs to be same size as your magnet so it will fit properly
No sealant is water proof super glue breaks down in time
The ex chief boatswain in me is screaming, but you got it done, hard as nails would have been better on your window frame, but despite using totally the wrong tools you got most of your jobs done Well Done.
Thank you, that really does mean a lot! 😊 We got there in the end and the fun is the lessons we learned along the way! 🤣
Wow, you are really not good at DIY at all 😂 Well, at least you tried, lol 😂
Like that you are sporting Carolina blue shirt
Good job , if you never try you never learn .❤️❤️
Thank you! DIY is a whole new world to us, we gotta give it a good go or we will never improve! 😊💞
Well said 😁
Did you manage to fux your accumulator issues? Watched the next video to find out but no mention of it. What a bummer to end a good day with bad leaks and no water.
It remains as it was to this day! It’s not fixed, but we can at least use the water pump. Unfortunately we don’t always manage to get the job done for quite some time after - in this case it’s because we can’t muster the energy to tackle it again 😬
Rivets for rivet gun good for metal added a vid to show you
And that is a masonry drill not for wood he he he Kev.
Any chance you are related to bodge it and scarper 😂
Poor Amy it’s ok!! You did lots of other stuff it’s ok
