The mammoth herd was clearly a traveling Herd that clearly was on the other side of the continental divide which the squirrel just broke. Clearing a path for the herd to move on.
The flood in this is historically correct. During the Ice Ages, ice would block rivers' drainage outlets and huge reservoirs of water would build up until a warming trend would weaken the ice and the water pressure would cause the ice dam to break. This happened on more than one occasion in the Northwest of the US. In one case a massive reservoir of water in Idaho swept through Washington state and Oregon in what might be the largest flood ever on the planet. Search for "ice age floods" for more information.
I feel like there’s many people in the comments who think that manny lost his parents and that’s why he’s withdrawn and grumpy. In the first movie the cave painting shows a baby mammoth and two adult mammoths. That is manny, his mate, and his child. The humans then cornered the mother and child and killed them. It’s very sad, but it gives way for a great sequel like this one for manny to start anew :D

And in this movie manny doesn’t wanna move on from them, bc I’m assuming it’s a recent pain, and moving on from something that kinda just happened must be difficult asf

that scene with baby Ellie always makes me sad ... I had a cat from a shelter that was homeless for several years. Sadly she was too traumatized, so I had to put her to sleep after awhile. She was such a kind and gentle soul, so the image of her freezing in the snow .... my cat-momma heart breaks.

I really love the peril and the stakes of this movie. It felt like a big event and was a cool escalation of the relatively smaller first film. It advances the themes and character development of Manny, and solidifies that Manny, Sid, and Diego really are a family. Lots of great emotional scenes like Ellie’s flashback and when Sid of all people is the one smart enough to tell Manny he needs to let go and move on. The animation naturally improved a lot in four years since 2002, the colors are great. Lots of great set pieces and humor. It’s generally an improvement on the original!
Great that you're doing this series, 'twas completely unexpected! The 3rd movie (next one in the series) is my personal favourite for a number of reasons, I'm excited for you to check it out! Btw the squirrel's name is Scrat the Saber-toothed Squirrel in case you didn't know.
Obviously they had to bring Scrat back to continue his shtick in other sequels, but I always thought it would be funny if him getting sucked out of acorn heaven and back to earth was him getting thawed out of the block of ice thousands of years later. I prefer the first film by a long shot.
A lot of people wonder what those two ravenous sea creatures were attacking everybody that were originally frozen in ancient glacial ice. It's been confirmed behind the scenes and in the merchandise that they are two ferocious species of marine reptile that once thrived in the oceans during the dinosaur-dominated era of the Mesozoic. So in the time of the mostly mammal-run Cenozoic ice age, these kinds of seagoing reptiles are supposed to be extinct... until these two appeared. And for these two ancient reptiles, taking advantage of the flood, it's going to be a food bath. The purple fishlike/crocodilelike one is apparently some kind of semiaquatic ichthyosaur and the bigger green whalelike one is apparently some kind of pliosaur. In the merchandise (including The Meltdown's companion novel) they are given personal names: Cretaceous and Maelstrom. Funny, because in the movie itself, I don't recall them ever being given names.
Oh! I forgot to add that there are two TV specials (at least 30 minutes each). _A Mammoth Christmas_ comes after the third movie, and _The Great Egg-Scapade_ comes after the fourth movie. Also, fun fact, the aquatic reptiles are Maelstrom the Pliosaur (green) and Cretaceous the Ichthyosaur (purple).

The vulture from 5:30 onwards is allegorically the anonymous figure wearing a black hood. He states the current problem, solution, imminent doom and then he leaves without leaving a trace. Just like the God of Death.

as to the being plenty of mammoths showing up at the end, I would like to believe, that manny got lost as a kid when his parents were hunted or whatever happened to them, then grew up grumpy, and refused to migrate like other animals so didn't find the others. Ellie also got lost as a kid and was raised with the opossums would have her not seen others as difference in migration paths. The more questionable thing, is why are all them mammoths waiting on the other side of a sheer ice wall, decided to go through after a ton of water flooded past them through the crack.

I had this movie on the PSP as a kid and it’s one of the first movies I remember. Everything from the soundtrack to the characters and even some individual quotes from the movie brings so much nostalgia and great feelings, I feel like a kid every time I watch it so entertaining!

Hey Tim, I think you should react to Ice Age: A Mammoth Christmas as well. It is short (23 minutes long probably) released with or probably after Ice Age 3. And you guessed it, it takes place after the events of ice age 3 and before the events of ice age 4. I just suggested it because you also reacted to Scrat no time for nuts as well. You should react to it, it's pretty good as well.

I watched this movie years ago when my family and I were on vacation and I remember it just being OK. Watching it now, I still think its just OK. The first one is still my favorite. Honestly after the Third movie this franchise should have ended, the first three movies for me are very nostalgic
