My chow chow was my “other”. She was a very special dog. My Nikka has been gone 17 years but I still dream of her and think of her often. She lived to be 15 years old and she was there through so much with me.. graduating college, two marriages, having my first child. I understand your bond with your beautiful chow💕

I've never had a chow, but when I grew up, an elderly couple that lived directly behind us, had a beautiful red chow named Cheeka. She was "THEIR" dog, but she tolerated the 4 kids in our family quite well. She was regal & aloof.

I had a Pit bull/Chow mix named Smokey and he was a wonderful boy! I loved him so much and my kids were his number one priority to love when they came in from school. Definitely stubborn and independent but posed no harm to anyone that I could see. Unfortunately, someone shot him. He was walking very slowly down our long drive, I went out to get him and I couldn't believe someone had done that. The vet thought, because he was such a strong healthy dog, that he'd make it. He died 3 days later. I held him close while he passed and yes, you CAN hear the love in their eyes. The stigma that bullies and chows have is unfair. Someone just feared my dog and didn't realize that he was so sweet. I miss him so much. I'd have one again if I had the energy a strong dog like that needs. Thank you, Lee, for what you do

I had a blue chow that I raised with my two children. He was an absolute joy. He guarded our children when they played in the yard. No one would ever be able to harm myself or my children. He was gentle and loving. His only flaw was he would try to kill anything that came in our yard, cats, squirrels etc. One day a man came to my door acting erratic. I was really starting to get scared when my chow (Howie) came and stood next to me and took a stance that spoke volumes. The man took one look at the dog which was staring him down and posed to attack and turned around and left. Always felt safe with our chow near. I miss him as he has passed but he will always live in my heart.

My Chow had a black tongue and I rescued him as a senior citizen. I called him Koguma because he looked like a Polar Bear. The vet wasn't sure exactly how old he was, but he was an older dog. I was told that they were very loyal dogs, so he would not be a loving dog and may have problems attaching to my family. I did have him neutered because he was not altered at his age. He was my fur baby for a summer and then one day his original owner sowed up. The family had been transferred out of the area (Naval family) and their "Bear" had disappeared the day they had to leave.... They had called the pound, over and over, but he had never shown up. I do not know his story, but my vet said he was underweight... I gave him a bath before I took him to a local groomer. who trimmed his nails, and shaved his coat to prepare for our summer in the Central Valley. When the Sailor called, I told him to come over, and the joyous barking and the glow in Koguma's eyes said it all. He offered to pay the vet bills I incurred, and I asked him to donate it to the ASPCA. He was home with his "real" family, and I do not regret loving him while I had him....

I’ve had rescue chows for 15 years. My first was a birthday surprise from my daughter. She picked me up from work, and told me she got me something I’d been wanting since I was a little girl - a chow chow! I couldn’t wait to meet that sweet pup! Instead, there was a snarling ferocious red lion waiting for me. Bella was disposed of at 8 months old by her first family. My daughter rescued her from them before they took her to the pound. Within a month, she was my devoted floof girl. She passed away last year at 14. I also have a 35 year old greenwing macaw who Bella accepted as part of our pack. Buddy has perches throughout the house and patio, so he is always with us. He sleeps on his tree in my bedroom, surrounded by the dogs. All my dogs respect him. Currently I have 2 rescue chows, plus a 100 pound German Shepherd- Golden Retriever mix super dog. Chows are definitely the “cats” of dogs. Strong willed and extremely independent, and they turn their nose up to any attempt to get them to chase balls!

Love this. We had a chow when we're children. She sat at end of drive or came down the street everyday to meet us from school. Once she decided she was going to the skating rink on the church outing and no one could get her off the bus. She sat next to us and stayed outside the rink door until we came back out. I've still tell stories of her to this day and we are in our 50's. My baby brother used to ride her like a horse. My gma would put her in the backyard with us and nobody was allowed in unless we let them. Thanks for the memories. My heart is warm and full right now.

We had a half Chow/ half Lab and he was amazing! We called him Buddy because he was everyone’s buddy but he was especially protective of my Mom. He was apparently abandoned at the stop sign near my home and I passed him for a day or two still sitting there. I picked him up and that was the end of the story. He lived with us for the rest of his life.

Awww! She is beautiful and very much a true chow! Mine was my true soulmate and no matter where if she was with me, she was the boss and queen. Once a chow bonds with someone (in a family they usually choose one family member as "theirs") wherever you go with them becomes their territory and they will protect at all costs. She bonded with you and the pack is yours, so therefore her job is to ensure you are all safe. So happy that you have Cece in your life and thank you for all the teaching you do with your videos and for your love of your babies! Can't wait to see who joins your pack next!!

I had a pure female Chow when my kids were small. I was raised with Germans as a kid. Chows were my dream dog. She was a beautiful, amazing, lovely girl. Completely bonded with the kids and I, gentle as can be. The guarding and alertness is real with Chows. I was used to it bc of the Germans I was raised with, but hands down my Chow worked it like a job. Family and friends would come to visit, and she would post in the hallway entry to guard the kids in the room playing and wouldn't let the grown ups pass until I told her it was okay. Kids could run by her all day and all night, but the grown ups had to have permission lol. I loved Wickett to pieces and she loved us the same. Best dog ever!

Cece's countenance reminds me very much of our Akita. In charge at all times, always on guard, took no nonsense. I didn't have other dogs at the time, but she saw my boys as her pack, and boy did she keep them in line! If they started rough housing inside she'd get in between them and lean against whoever was closest to the couch until they were pinned against it. If they argued during video games she would go sit on the aggressor until he cried uncle. I depended on her for coparenting the same as you do with Cece. She was very much a Mama Bear!

I put my girl Jezebel to rest 2 weeks ago. She was a Border Collie German Shepherd mix. She had all of those great traits. She herded kids and endured my cat Stink. We spent many hours hiking together and I always had her off leash on local trails. She had a 50m off leash connection and always stayed in that. She kept my friends kids on trail and close, behaving better than most of the kids. She was always on guard, eager to point out anything of interest. She did her fair share of killing...squirrels, wild turkeys and chipmunks, yet we sat and watched 3 generations of foxes raising kits and herds of deer at the Sifton bog without her leaving my side. She was a calm role model for some of my neighbour's dogs too. From putting a young rottie in his place, to calming a neglected beagle, she was friendly to any dog, or child she met. She made my role as leader so much easier since she was such a smart dog. She mumbled, whispered, smiled, barked and we howled together to John Lee Hooker. My time with her has inspired me to help pet owners to understand what our dogs want and need. Clear leadership, consistent and unconditional love... Funny how that is what we all, as humans, thrive on.

I had another dog and I was a bit leary that they wouldn’t mesh. But in reality she loved her sister so much that when she passed away that she mourned her so deeply that it actually caused her intestines to twist and sadly she went to join her BFF over Rainbow Bridge. I had a chow/pit bull mix named Buster we got when he was a few months old. He was so lovable, and when he greeted those he knew his whole body wagged. He was also very protective. If I or my husband weren't home, no one was getting in the house. I had one experience where our lawn man tried to come in the house while my husband wasn't home, it was just my daughter and I. I told him not to but he was coming in anyway. I caught Buster mid jump with teeth bared. That man never did that again. Buster also hid under the bed in thunderstorms or when I tried to give him a bath. No dog breed is evil, it is in how the dog is raised. He was the best and most loyal dog ever and I miss him every day since he passed away.

She was also very good with other dogs we brought into our home as pets but wouldn't really have anything to do with other people's pets. So it surprised me when my husband and I were buying our first home and the insurance company would not give us homeowners insurance bc we had a chow. I adopted an 11yro(estimated by the shelter vet) Chow from a shelter over 5yrs ago now and I was honored to be able to give her a place to retire in peace and live comfortably and be loved in her last two years. She was incredible and such an amazing kind stoic soul. I have times where I try to live by her example - she left a real imprint on my soul and she will always be the best representation of what I hope to see in the world. I don't know if this is typical of Chows (there's a lot of misinformation I feel) but she was magnificently un-bothered by anything. She was just so accepting of everyone and was always so calm and confident. I remember a neighbor's dog broke off his chain and attacked her - I had to separate them but even in that moment, even though he was a large very muscular dog - she had this air of confidence where she didn't need to overreact because nothing was a real threat to her. *SHE WAS OK! Neither dog was hurt - no punctures or injuries - the neighbor's dog was fortunately super people friendly so he followed me back to his house once I separated the two and my girl just waited for me calmly.* I'm trying to not write a whole book because I really could, but she has this incredible air of strength and peace at the same time and I could never have ever anticipated the mark she would leave on me. Those two wonderful years were a true honor and I miss her all the time.

Cece's way or the hwy. Perfectly stated. I learned early on not to have chastising talks with my 70- lb Chow mix, Kate (Irish redhead name) if she is backed into a corner! Adopted Kate when she was four. She had been returned to the shelter three times, even once by the people running the shelter, and they wouldn't tell me why and I never figured out a good reason unless they just don't know how to love dogs who have issues, which we all do!
They said they would have to call at least 2 to 3 men to get her in my car (rented Charger with huge back when folded down). Due I think to an incident that the Foster had with two other dogs which almost killed each other, when it was time to leave, which was almost immediate because both of those other dogs had to get stitches ASAP, Kate (caged up) couldn't wait to get in my car and get out of there! It was hilarious! She laid down in the back on all of the blankets and didn't move until we got home. Little did she know then, she, like I had done, was moving from the Pacific ocean to one of the hottest cities in California.
She loves good food, has the daily built-in alarm clocks to remind me! Very gentle and careful taking tiny leftover bites from my fingers. Sits and stares and guards perimrter outside all day (except in bad weather:125 degrees in desert sometimes). Ceiling to floor window when inside (took Honey's, my golden retriver chow mix's favorite spot after Honey passed away last year). Runs inside to check on me, runs out again.
The Foster lady said don't let her out with Honey for at least a few days. Although I had never had a big Chow, I am definitely not good at taking that kind of advice, just smiled politely, and (after a 6-hr ride) let her out as soon as Honey smelled her and they bonded sister to sister immediately! They even took turns in 5 minute shifts digging the same hole to China! And chasing in circles! Then began their perimeter guarding side by side on their first day together. So many stories.
The loss of Honey not only broke my heart but Kate's. She often sits and stares at an empty backyard at my neighbor's just waiting for their dog or other dogs to come outside. Neighbor has tall fence so she can only watch. My budget won't allow me to get another dog but I think I'm starting to weaken a bit.
In the four years I have had kate, she took a threatening defensive posture twice to protect me until she knew I was okay. She would not let me get by her! Otherwise, as soon as I demonstrate a visitor is not a threat she runs and hides and wants nothing to do with strangers, even after seeing them several times. She takes her guard job seriously, does it well. And has a ferocious bark!
It took at least 2 years for her to look me in the eye and see my love for her. It's sad what must have happened to her before I adopted her. She now has the most deep and loving and tender look in her beautiful hazel eyes when our eyes meet and we talk.
My conclusion with Kate is to give her her head, let her feel her built-in gifts and Power and not interfere. It's as though she wants to teach me, not the other way around, and I'm fine with that unless she's in jeopardy. I have acknowledged that there are some things she is afraid of and I will likely never know why. But she definitely tells me there is something. And, as you say and show, she is very cuddly and loving when the days duties are over. And she loves the occasional brief massage.
I love your channel and everything you have done and are doing. And understand. I love the interaction you have with your dad, esp the bird sleepover when it was time to go to bed! I have had many birds in my life that I had to part with (work) and often wonder if they are still living out their long lives.
Later. God has blessed you with many gifts and you are using them to His glory!

What a beauty Cece is. I love her. Our ChowChow, Thai Thai was a big bear. He was our guard and companion. He was pretty intimidating to our family and friends and a very good judge of character. When he started to age and fail we were heart sick. He had a beautiful life with us , we rescued him from a sad situation so he loved us too. Very smart. I was crying watching her in the pack , such a beautiful example to follow. Keep it up Lee and Cece. , I love y’all. ♥️♥️♥️

Yep, behavior is a product of the human AND the animal, not just the animal alone. I have a chihuahua and Pomeranian mix, both known to be yappers and stubborn. Have no issues with him because we worked on the behavior early instead of letting him get away with it because he was cute.

Hi Lee! You're so sweet to say those things about Cece. She IS a beautiful sweetheart. She's an angel who's as innocent as all your other animals. While innocent, they do the job they are meant to do. I see that not all people understand why these angels behave a certain way, maybe not realizing that these animals are doing their job. And I know you know all this. It's why I like listening to you talk...I learn from you. I wish ALL humans understood animals' behaviors...there would be a lot less animals in shelters. Correct me if I'm wrong, Lee..😇🥰😇

I rescued a 3 legged chow in South Africa, named Phoenix. The first week we had him, he was hell bent on escaping. Then the animal rescue called and said they had found his mate, and would we take her too? Of course we went to pick her up immediately, and the story they told us was heart wrenching. Their owner had died, and the family abandoned them in the back yard without food or water. He was escaping every day to go hunt in the forest for his mate. The story was told by construction workers who were building next door to the house. They were throwing some food into the yard for the dogs and giving them water, and when they left, they called the rescue. The reunion had us all in tears, and he never tried to escape again. He used to walk with my teenaged daughter to school every day and then come home... no point in trying to fence him in. He slept outside by choice and guarded the house - unless there was a thunder storm, in which case he would smash the door open with his body and leap into bed with me. There were a lot of neglected and abused dogs roaming around our little village, and we kept a massive bowl of dry food outside for whoever was hungry. He never had any problem with them, and yes, he was always the leader of the pack, always protecting. My kids had rats, who would run around the house at night, and he never attempted to catch them, but wild rats were fair game and he was a ferocious hunter. Once, after shopping, I put down my parcels to unlock the front door, and forgot the bag containing our weeks meat. Later, when I went out to call the dogs for supper, I found Phoenix lying guarding the meat from the other dogs who were keeping their distance and staring longingly at the bag. Chows are phenomenal dogs, and I miss my Phoenix still.

My fourteen year old Cubby is a Pomeranian/Corgi cross. We have moved to many apartments and with each one Cubby will access the perimeter. First few weeks he pays close attention. He relaxes with some people, never accepts some, and appraises each new neighbor. My other cross, Scout just leaves the job to Cubby, so he barks when Cubby does. Also Cubby is happy go lucky and a friend of all while my Scout can be a nipper. Humans have had a special relationship with dogs for centuries. Note: I have owned dogs all my life (I'm 74) and Cubby is my most intelligent dog (I can talk to him in sentences.) Still, when he gets loose he will not come home until he is ready. I always have thought of German Shepherds and Chows as similar in their intense depth of loyalty and understanding of humans as well as their potential ferociousness toward what they judge to be threats. I think the key for chows is how much connection and understanding they get within a home. Like any powerful thing, they can be a real force of good or for harm depending on how those around them inspire them to be.

EXCELLENT video about Chows. So happy Cece is doing well. Personally...I'm afraid of Chows. I was a vet tech for 16 yrs & heard SO MANY stories of Chows being unpredictable, with people and other dogs. I also know someone personally who was attacked by his own Chows, so I'm very wary of them, unfortunately. I know not ALL dogs conform to breed behavior, but Chows are NOT for everyone, that's for sure, you need to REALLY know what you're doing, and be a strong Mom/Dad to have one, IMO.

Cate, I agree with you about Chows. I've been a dog lover my entire life, volunteered for over five years for an animal shelter/safe place, have had many different breeds, and roomed with a couple who had three Chows. They definitely have an attitude and I found them to be extremely aloof and only approachable by their pack leader. It takes a special person to have them. The only dog I've ever been bitten by.

Just like with any breed (I once saw an aggressive lab if you can believe it), you need to know what you’re working with. If you’re not the boss, they will most certainly be. Just as with any breed with questionable breeding practices, you have behavior risks. I would counter that many don’t read a dog’s body language well or that many gets breeds for looks and don’t fulfill their purpose. Also, they can read your heart rate, perspiration and temperature, all markers of stress and anxiety.

After you’ve accomplished talking about the dogs you wish to share in this series, please consider doing educational videos on such topics as pack dynamics, commonly misunderstood dog traits, what to look for when meeting a shelter dog and how best to approach them, etc. You’ve touched on these topics in other videos, but revisiting them in a concentrated format would be both helpful and searchable for those seeking information. Good to.meet you Chow-Lee! Just teasin'! I got my mom's Chow mix when she went into a nursing home but loved her the first time I saw her at 2 or 3 months old. In her youth on mom's 10 acres, along with an Australian shepherd, Mollie and Heidi would chase coyotes back into the desert hills of the Horseheaven hills in eastern WA state. They had a huge back yard but if Mollie got out she'd be gone for several days. When mom moved into her city home Mollie had a big yard still but not as big. There she went after any cat who went in the back yard! Very territorial! She tolerated visiting dogs but put them in their place if they misbehaved. When I got her, living in a ground-level apt. of a small building (8 apts) with communal yards, we walked a lot. I took her to regional parks, the ocean not far away, the mts, not far away, and she loved it! The last couple yrs. of her life she slowed down some but kept going...until she couldn't. She was the most beautiful, most intelligent, most loving (though stubborn!) dog, best friend, I ever had! I know she'd be a hunter if I let her; she'd drool and lift up a paw when she saw a rabbit or squirrel. She was very social to the neighbor ladies and made a special effort to go say hi to them(she talked to people she liked. Seriously!) but only liked certain men. Whatever the inconvenience to me, LOL, Mollie insisted on greeting her friends up close, and they all loved her too. She was mostly outside and loved snow...just lay in it and not come in. I always had windows and doors open so she'd be comfortable, and as you say, brushing out her undercoat was a constant challenge. When she had enough she'd harrumph and move away. She became good friends with Misty, a neighbor cat, and she loved my sister's cats, all half a dozen or so of them, over her 3 dogs. Molly(changed the spelling as I forgot mom spelled it with an "ie" at the end and not a "y.") Looked like an auburn bear! She too, like Cece, was always alert to her surroundings, and her cute nose would lift up and quiver with whatever the air brought her. She loved walking to the park but taught me a lesson. There's a pretty little park about 5 min. walk away and we'd walk there. After a few times she refused to come home so once I had to leave her there, walk home, get my car and bring her home! After that I always drove there. Lol! Sometimes she liked nocturnal walks. Out back near a fence she met an owl hovering over a mole hill and stopped within 3 feet of it and started talking to it. I was sure it would fly away but it didn't; just stayed there and looked at Molly. This happened about half a dozen times so guessing they were ok with each other. (I got the chills though. Owls freak me out!) I must say this; the only time she insisted on coming back inside, and quickly, was one time. We'd only walked outside for not even 10 seconds and she pulled to get back home. I always trusted her. I thought perhaps she was ill. She wasn't; the next day both the maintenance man and I saw cougar tracks in the snow by the fence. I also heard something walk on the roof pretty heavily but thought it was fat raccoons. We have tall cedars nearby that any wildcat could use but this was a first in our rural town although once later on there was a cougar alert. At the school next door a cougar was seen on the grounds at 11 a.m. then seen close to downtown. No more night-walking for us! Also, I don't believe in scolding dogs, especially not her kind. I never scolded her. Ever. She only went potty inside once but couldn't help it. She was proud and mortified and I felt bad for her.and verbally reassured her I didn't mind. I didn't! Love doesn't mind stuff like that; just the well-being of one's best friend. If we had company of other dogs, she was usually the Alpha. Definitely the mama bear. I identify as a Chow too Lee, proud to say. Molly passed a few yrs. ago at 16 and there's never a day goes by that I don't miss her. I'm grateful for the time I had with her. What is Cece's favorite food? Molly loved most meats but raw fish, liver, yogurt were foods she loved. Brie cheese too, or dead birds at the park! Yuck! A time or 2 I heard munching of bones, and yep, there she was! Being a dog! God bless you Lee and love to the pack.👵🙏❤❤❤💖🐕

I wanted an English Bulldog when I was a kid. We have always had rescue dogs and I saw a chance to by one that a breeder was getting rid of because she couldn't be bred. So Ruby Begonia became my dog and she was such a character. She lived to be 10 1/2 and I still miss her after all these years. But I miss all my fur babies that have gone over the bridge. I love you and your videos. And of course, your precious poochies.

    She's the un-cowardly lion! hehe! She's a beauty.
I adopt senior Poms (thanks to small city apt). Right now I have two 16 year old boys, Leo & Ollie. I have watched your Pom Pom adoption video like a 'million' times. I laugh and cry every time. Love those lions. And love you too.
Thank you for what you do.
Shout out to Muttville Senior Dog Rescue in SF!!!

I had the most wonderful chow mix years ago. Her name was Anja, she was my sweet, affectionate baby, she was very protective of me, and she had a beautiful smile. She smiled all the time and everyone loved her. She passed in 1996 and she is still legendary. I’ve had dogs all my life but none like Anja. 💖💖🌸

I love this series, can't believe I haven't watched it before now. Also, any time you show the dogs by the river, and all we can hear is the rushing sound of water, I just feel my soul relax.

Have had a Chow (as a child) and Akita (early adult to last year)... your Chow is one of the friendliest to a person they don't know that I've seen (including chows in shelters) I've worked with . Our Akita was half Akita/half Queensland she was phenomenal, smart, kind, and protective. The chow was a force to behold. Loved me, mostly me, and tolerated most of our family and neighbors. Hated strangers and other dogs. Loved old people.

My first dog, my soul dog, was a Chow/ lab mix.. he was the greatest and always will be the most amazing dog I have ever known. His loyalty was unbelievable. I saved him, but better yet, he absolutely saved me from wanting to end my life. I owe my very life to my baby boy ❤️ I KNEW I was safe with him. He was my whole world.
I got his portrait tattooed on my leg, it is so comforting to see him every single day.

From the day you picked CeCe up at the shelter with the other 2 I fell in love with her. You used to call her a bear, but I thought she looked like a lion, her black eyes looked like stars. I love every time I get a glimpse of her. She's absolutely regal. Knowing what you've just told me about the breed I'd be cautious to ever get one, but I adore every glimpse of CeCe I can get and always look for her on your walks. Probably my favorite breed, or the one I grew up with was this mix, sort of looked like CeCe, he was the same color, cream, his name was Chino. He was a wonderful family dog, never bit anyone, very protective and always seemed happy.

My sister and I both have chows and we also grew up with one who lived 16 years. They are such a blessing to our lives, definitely very firece and bossy but forever loyal and loving to their pack. They would die to protect us. Missing our beloved Koisha❤️

The first dog my family ever got, about 25 years ago when I was a teenager, was a husky/chow mix. She looked like a butter yellow husky with beautiful brown eyes but the shelter told us they knew she was part chow because the inside of her mouth and her tongue were dark purple. My parents ended up returning her to the shelter after a couple of months because even though she was great with people, even small children, she kept trying to murder our cat and she was super dog-aggressive. Because of her build she could get out of any collar or harness we put her in. This 45lb dog fit through an 8-inch cat door. The final straw was when she escaped her harness and went after the Rottweiler down the street. It took two full-grown adults to restrain her while the Rottweiler plopped his butt on the driveway on command and looked at her like she lost her mind. Which she probably did, going after a dog three times her size. Anyway, after that incident my parents decided that she was too much to manage and there were too many other dogs in our neighborhood to risk it.
Husky, chow, or both... not a great first dog and not great for suburban neighborhoods either. Our next dog, a sheltie/collie mix who was so laid back that we referred to her as the world's friendliest rug, was a much better match for our family. But I've always wondered what happened to Ginger.

I had rescued a very old Samoyed ion college. in the year he lived ,he went + found a chow breeding couple near me + almost bred their chows. Then we leart about chows. Absolutely a cat + dog as one. We've rescued 7 in the last 40 years. Each is an individual, but generally low m maintenance couch potato, w/ no house breaking needed, + safe to be with the babies,+ no one wants to mess with you. (even tho the chow could be the cowardly lion,). Currently we have one that would have been a shelter return-not good for any dog-but chows in particular, met the owner in a parking lot ,handed over with disgust (he had been abused horribly by a man or men, + the man wasn't happy he wasn't just able to "forget that"). so on the 4 hour trip home this baby kept to himself, in the back of the truck seat, + wouldn't even take any favorite food, string cheese. Finally after 3+1/2 hours he just climbed into my lap,+ surrendered,+ when we got back our formerly abused sheperd mix gave a mournful cry as if he knew his pain already. After that it was a battle for him to eat, he worried away most all of his beautiful coat- never to grow back. then we rescued another chow for him-- this one LOVES to eat, but had no other idea of how to be a dog. So they learn from each other, sleep in beds next to each other...... As my husband always says a chow is perfection - why mess with that! Chows forever!!!! altho l wonder, has you ever known a chow samoyed cross?
