    I did not make it into the TALK/EPIK program, but I did learn a lot about the Asian visa process. I would say that most people's experience with this program is that you spend a lot of time getting paperwork ready and do not get a job offer. They do not give you the money back that you spent on your FBI background check or getting your degree notarised. It is better to look somewhere else to teach English.
    I plan to continue teaching English in China or look into teaching history at a private school. My current salary is ok, but it is on the upper lower end of what I could be getting. What you are doing is so great for teachers.

    Great Video! Can't wait to head over to VIETNAM for a new ESL experience. Best experience was teaching in Thailand for 2 years! The pay isn't amazing, but the Country and experience in itself is so worth it, especially for first time teachers. China was different. Great pay, but the lifestyle isn't so healthy or fun as other Asian Countries! Thanks for the info Alex :)

    I've been teaching in China (Chengdu) for over a year now and its sweet. Cool thing about living in China is that its so big and therefore so diverse. I think when people think of teaching in China they think of the hectic places like Beijing and Shanghai but actually there are teaching opportunities everywhere in places that are suitable for pretty much anyone (including places that highly resemble Vietnam, Korea, and even Europe). For myself, I wanted to live in a big and modern yet traditional city thats not too busy and not too dull and here I am in Chengdu and its exactly what I want. Of course, the pollution is bad and the internet situation is not that great but I still can't complain about my setup here in Chengdu. To be sure, one thing that remains consistent across the country is high pay, great benefits, and a sense of adventure. Of course, like anywhere in the world, do your god dang research before signing a contract cause there are tons of scammers out there...but yeah, I can't recommend China more to people who are looking for a great experience living abroad

    Blimey does Korea sound competitive these days - it wasn't exactly easy for me to get a job there when I first went there in late 2012. (Had one school accept me and then drop me because they found an in-country candidate (so they wouldn't have to pay for my flight... This was after I'd sent my docs to Korea :-/) Ended up getting a job at a reputable hagwon and stayed there for 3 years. Moved to Hanoi in September and the teaching scene and opportunities (especially if you have a BA and Celta, and are a native speaker - although, not necessarily, for those language centre jobs...) blow those of Korea out of the water to be honest. Still get homesick for Korea at times though...

    I would say that the future of teaching English can be Vietnam and Cambodia. China is ok for people who have a BA and are willing to work at a language centre for a year before settling. Vietnam looks so relaxing. My co workers are discouraging me from going to Vietnam when I feel like I am done teaching English in China.
    You have a point with the in class certification. I think employers are ok with you having an online TEFL if you have teaching experience to go with the online TEFL.
    If you ever go to China, I would like to meet you. Will you consider going to Beijing?

    How do you feel about Japan? That's where I really want to be but it seems the ESL market seems to be bigger in China and easier to get a job than Japan. Vietnam is definitely an option but I'd rather be in China but there's a big problem that makes me rethink teaching there...the air quality. What's your feelings on that? There are a few cities where the air quality is not so bad; Kunming, Hong Kong, Suzhou, and Nanjing.

    • @ninja.teacher
      @ninja.teacher  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah I'd love to go to Japan but can't justify it cause that's not where the demand is.
      Pollution is a tricky one and I wouldn't want to speak too much on the topic as I haven't researched it enough.

    • @Kenny-Ross
      @Kenny-Ross 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Right! From doing research far more jobs pop up for China than Japan. I guess I'll keep it to China and Vietnam. Thanks for the quick response!

    You can still get an awesome paying job if you dont have a degree, however a TEFL is needed i think if you dont have a degree and want to get a good paying job. I've gotten some great offers and i don't have my degree yet. I also did my TEFL online, however i did do 20 hours of in person training.

    For China, I'd recommend not going to Shanghai or Beijing if you're just starting out. Cost of living has skyrocketed and (good) jobs are competitive unless you're a licensed teacher from a Western country. As other commenters have said, air pollution, slow internet, shady companies, and visa headaches are commonplace in China. That being said, there's still an enormous demand for foreign teachers and the benefits and pay can be great. For private lessons in Tier 2 cities you can easily charge 250+ RMB/hour (I've met some teachers who charge 500/hour). People are very kind to foreigners but doing business with Chinese people can be frustrating, to put it nicely.
    There's lots of interesting cities in China I'd never heard of until I came here - Qingdao, Xiamen, Hangzhou, Chengdu, Dalian (and more) are all big cities with smaller foreign communities that have a lot to offer. Some cities in the south in particular (Xiamen, Fuzhou, Guangzhou region) don't have the same air quality problems as, well, almost everywhere else.

    Hey Alex,
    first of all I really like your channel, good job!
    I have a question. I am a 26 year German guy and I am considering teaching english in south korea. You mentioned in the video that the market is quit saturated and most of the companys are looking for native speaking females. How would you rate my chances with an in class TEFL-cetificat of finding a job in seoul?
    should I consider other countrys for applying for a job. Or in general do I have chances on the market as a German without a native speaking background?
    Thanks in advance for your support.
    Best Regards
    Jonas

    Hi! Thanks for the informative video, I've got a quick question. I've been teaching English (in Scandinavia) as a second language for the past 2.5 years, so I was wondering if I should still take the tefl or celta certificate? Another thing; I'm asian and not from a native English speaking country. Is it true that some schools discriminate asian applicants (as in you get paid less because you're not caucasian)? Is the chance to land a job lower for a teacher from a non-native speaking country? Thanks for all the help!

    • @ninja.teacher

    hey mate! thanks for the videos. now I'm not looking to teach this year (last year of my degree) and im studying a double degree primary education and arts (Korean) in Australia. along with a TEFOL cert would that be more competitive than an ordinary bachelor's degree for a job anywhere in Korea? peace

      Xuse H There is no demand at all in Japan for English teachers. Been like that for a few years now.

    Question. I'm a teacher with 7 years experience. I started as a high school math teacher. Then a Spanish high school teacher. Lastly, I've been teaching adults in Jail (Mens Central Jail, Twin Towers Correctional Facility, and the women's jail Century Regional Detention Facility. My degree is in History with concentrations in U.S., Latin America, and East and South East Asia. I'll have my teaching credential by the end of this year. So finally my question, would my experience and certification help me land a good job at any of these places you have talked about? Please advise. Thank you for your time.
