      Like the people who called into Frasier's radio program on that show the voices in the answering machine at the beginning of each Rockford Files episode were almost always celebrities, the few times they weren't it'd be someone from the production crew but it was typically other famous actors they'd get to read the lines, unfortunately unlike Frasier they were never credited and a list wasn't kept for posterity.

    • @Stephen_Lafferty
      @Stephen_Lafferty หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      My favourite memory of seeing the show when it aired in the UK in the 1980s! Frasier used the same idea for the guest voices on Kelsey Grammer's show :D

      I agree. I lived through the 70’s, from 1970 to 1979 I was 7 thru 16 and I loved that times. Even though the 80’s were my prime, the 70’s were a great time for TV, The Rockford Files, All in the Family, Sandford & Son, The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and of course, Sinatra at the Garden! I’d love to go through it all again. Also, The Name of the Game and McCloud. James Garner was a great guy!

    Thanks for posting this. I just recently started re-watching The Rockford Files on a streaming service, and I had forgotten how comedic the shows are. I also love the shots of LA back in the 70s. I mostly visited LA myself in the 80s but most of the views did not change. I liked how his character wasn't the "super tough guy" type you see so much of, he could fight though, and would sometimes win but also sometimes lose. Made it more realistic. Again, thanks for posting!

It was part of the session known as "Industry Night", and the directors of the school, Tony Miller and Patricia George showed this video to us inside the sound stages of CBS Studio Center...It been over 44 years since I last saw it. Yep, we've gotten quite a few comments on his iconic Firebirds (they had to have a garage full to keep up with the shooting schedules!). I found this on the web:
      "The show bought three Firebirds each season. James Garner didn't like the styling of the 1979 Firebird, so '78s were used until the show ended its run in 1980."

      Yeah, and I think his lines were written by Steve Cannell, although David Chase and Juanita Bartlett did some of the other lines and "story". This gag reel is probably one of the few overproduced bits of fun film clips out of the TV genre of the time. We even had music cues by Mike Post at our disposal to tie it all together, so it became a "production" with all hands onboard!

    Boy I loved that show and everyone on it. I even made an outgoing answering machine message like his.
    The little touches were so important, like how each major character called Jim a different name. His dad called him "son," Angel called him "Jimmy," and Gandy called him "RockFish."
    Impressive how hard they all worked, and so many older, fading stars getting parts. Touching see in this a VERY old Paul Stewart as a guest star. I'm gonna try and find that episode. He was so great in so many films noir, which "Rockford" was a hat-tip to. Check him out in "KIss Me Deadly," for one.

    Thank you so much for posting this, I'm one of Jim's biggest fans. In Jim's book, he said, early in his career while shooting a movie with Brando, he didnt know if he was cut out for acting, remembering his lines, he told Marlin one night. Brando then taught Jim a trick to remember his lines word for word. So Jim never improvised, what he said is what was written for him. Now both Jim and Marlin are gone, and we'll never know what that secret was.

    • @patl6978

      Doesn't make any sense. Brando never could remember any of his lines for the godfather so much so they had to make cue cards for him.

      I'm afraid most of the cast and crew have on occasion have used "language". Even I in the privacy of my cutting room have said something that my mother would washed my mouth out about. When Jack Klugman and Stuart Margolin spout off, it seems less of a surprise.

    I was a kid when this show was on, so I didn't appreciate it; I may not have been allowed to watch it actually. As an adult, I'm struck by its high quality (and I'm a sucker for the look and feel of the '70s) and have watched the whole series a number of times. One thing, among many, that stands out is the incredible comic acting of Stuart Margolin as Angel.

      And all the voices on the answering machine gags at the beginning of each episode were celebrities of that era, unfortunately unlike Frasier where they did the same thing with the people who called into his radio show the celebrity answering machine voices weren't credited and no one thought to keep a list back then for posterity so the identities of some of them have spun off into the universe.

    Dennis Weaver doing the narration, complete with stammering, is a treat. At first I thought it was just a very good impression.

    • @rodericstephens
      @rodericstephens 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      "Rockford" was based at Universal Studios at the time, so we had good relations with the other production companies on the lot. When it came time for putting the gag reel together, Steve Cannell had worked with Dennis Weaver in the past, so he got him to record the narration that he had written for the horse riding bit (a stock shot from Weaver's "McCloud" series). I knew Jack Klugman from my stint with him editing "The Odd Couple" series, so I asked him to contribute a clip which his "Quincy M.E." crew shot. I then integrated it into the reel, adding my recorded voice to answer his scripted questions and dialogue, since I wasn't on the set. I'd never had such a scripted gag reel, but with the talents of writers Steve Cannell, David Chase and Juanita Bartlett and it being the "Rockford" swan song wrap party, we gave it our all!
