What a brilliant idea Deirdre! That’s a great way to use up the dregs in your patterned paper stash - which is what I shall be doing. Thank you for the idea. Stay safe x
You're going about it the hard way. If you cut the strips and just put the double-sided tape on the plain side then stick it to the parchment paper until you're ready to use it. I store a bunch of it in clear sheet protectors. Even easier just stick the double-sided tape onto the wrong side of the paper then cut the strips and store the strips on parchment paper in sheet protectors
What a great idea. I craft with mostly vintage papers so I could make vintage washi tape, probably the matte side up. You could also just make a whole bunch of strips and store them right on the wax paper. I use cereal bags for everything.
Very interesting technique! I taught diy washi tape technique years ago [in U S] when washi tape was first introduced. Instead of using pattern paper, in my workshop, I taught stamping on all different types of tapes. It's also fun to use your own diy carved stamps for a unique look. As an alternative, my fave base tape for stamping is Scotch Removable because it is so low-tack, just like store-bought washi. Next fave is Scotch Magic permanent, because of its translucency. In addition, I like to stamp onto clear packing tape [see video by Julie Fei-Fan Balzer], and clear or white medical tape. If you also like pops of white background, it's interesting to stamp on Post-it correction tape, too! I prefer the wider size. DIna Wakely also makes a good solid color [white] base tape - but it's a tad more opaque than Scotch tapes - and hers has a slightly rougher texture. I use Avery return address labels as diy washi stickers - but these are white not clear. For clear sheets of sticker paper I use full sheet clear shipping labels for the office supply store - 10 sheets per package, but not cheap. These sheets are easy to cut in strips with scissors. TO use with a die cutting machine, try stamping images with some kind of outline. Or use a black permanent/sharpie marker to outline the images. Always test and experiment first! Regarding Masking tape, due to it's extreme tackiness, I don't use/adhere Masking tape as the base for diy washi. Instead, when I use it, I prefer to adhere Masking tape directly to the paper/page/base. [US masking tape is like using E6000 to cement something to paper - not suitable for diy washi [i.e. low-tack tape], IMO.] Making diy washi is S-O much fun - as was teaching how to make it, too! tfs!
Washi Tape is a type of paper (or sometimes fabric) tape that has different designs,colors,textures...used in scrapbooking, journals, planners, mixed media projects, etc. It usually comes in a roll, like a duct tape, but they can be very thin to 2 or sometimes 3 inches. Nowadays there are many "designer", beautiful washi tapes...it's actually out of control, lol. I hope that was helpful :D
@Our Upcycled Life • Deidra: Do you know whether there is an adhesive spray that could be used in lieu of the double-sided tape? An adhesive spray would allow more width variations, just like we get with purchased Washi tape. Thanks. 👍
I love this idea. And thank you for mentioning flipping the strip over for a matte side. I did not even give that a thought. I was having a brain freeze. Instead I paused video and was looking to see if I can find matte packing tape. Now I don't need to purchase that. Lol. Thanks again for sharing.
Your a genius . I have learned so much from you already. Quick question. How do you decide whether to spray paint a project or paint a project? Any tips
Have you ever tried putting strips of paper tape from the first aid section down on parchment or and old empty printable sticker sheet back and print the designs on them with the printer?
Great idea! What a wonderful tutorial....Diedre, you would make an awesome Art Teacher. I've learned so much from you. You truly are an artist...you think outside the box, and have such original ideas. Thank you so much for sharing ❤️
Hi, do you know if this would work with printed art work like on a ink jet or laser printer on plain white paper? I have printed scrapbook paper that I wonder would work this way.
Oh my gosh, this is WONDERFUL! I LOVE washi tape, but can't justify the expense of tape tailored to each project. This is PERFECT!! Thank you so much!!!
love this video.bit late for me as i have brought several kinds of washi tape most colours i will not use as the colours are dull.how i brought them they were in packs of 5 and out of them i might only get one i will use .so i will try what you showed on your video ,thank you .
Love this tutorial. Learning so much when I watch your videos. With regards to this one, can you use things like magazines, newspapers, comic strips, wrapping paper etc to produce the same effect? Do you know if that would work?
@@OurUpcycledLife that’s great to hear. I’ve seen some really nice wrapping paper that I would like to try haha. Thank you, I absolutely love your tutorials they give me so many great ideas

Not thrifty, costs more to make than just buying the washi tape. I'm sure Dollar Tree etc have it. Video very enjoyable to watch and very creative though.xx
Just buy washi tape, which is probably cheaper than having to buy two different types of tape and patterned paper. Life is too short for this amount of faffing around, sorry. Xx
The whole point of washi tape is that it's recyclable and doesn't really damage what is put on, like masking tape. Double sided tape is very difficult to get off things and your shiny top layer makes it unrecyclable. You could call this washi effect tape but it isn't washi tape.

I love the way you’ve made it transparent so it’s different from just cutting up a piece of paper & sticking it on. What an awesome idea. Thank you 😊

Neat idea, but all of my washi tape isn't shiny.
Great way to use the scrap paper we all have in our stash.
Thanks 😊
i made tape with stripes of old maps
(or as we germans say:
"Landkarten")
Yes that would look fabulous great idea

Im sure you could use a spray adhesive and it would work great!
I've never heard of washie take. What do you do with it?
Scrapbooking, junk journaling, mixed media
I'd be adhering the clear tape to the patterned paper, THEN trimming them down to size 🤷🏻♀️
Awesome idea! I have so many pretty papers and scraps I could use this way. Thanks!
Wonderful!

I have not but I bet that would work definitely a DIY I should try
Why not put the box tape on before you slice the paper?

Store on old credit card or laminated cards.
Maybe a silly question but is this just for paper & napkins, or can you use cardstock too?
Yes you could definitely use card stock to when doing this technique

Would this work with magazines and or comic books ?? Love this idea u r so creative. ❤
Yes of course!

Will it not stick without double sided tape.... Like u made labels ? Those were sticky after rubbing off the paper..
It can be a little bit sticky but when you have that much paper on the tape you lose the stickiness
