I was all excited that DW finally.... finally put up a comparison video! I was so.... so unexcited that it was hard to hear the difference between the tones. I heard the tones of the two guys speaking! That was very noticeable, but I'm watching this to hear the difference between the different woods, not those two dudes.
Thumbs down to you DW! I hate to do that because I play a DW Cherry kit, and I love the kit, but this video needs to be redone with no talking, and use a better kick mic too while you are at it. \m/ \m/

Oak is refined and consistent. Easy to record that one, I bet, and would sound great in a mix that favored clear, articulate drums.
Cherry is more lively. Would work well in contemporary music where oak might be too dry.
Maple is a great all-around kit -- good bite, good tone, still very even. You could use that anywhere.
Birch has great attack, a little brighter tone with good character, but not quite as elegant. Perfect for rock, but might be a touch too brash for some styles.

Its because of the natural density of the diffent woods maple is a lighter density, birch is a little heavier hence the darker tones oak is even more dense and cherry is a tighter grain.

I think we all agree that less talking would be better. But, this isn’t surprising. This is a DW video. They have sell us on all the details of each kit/type of wood. Although i love the company and all four kits, there really isn’t a whole lot of differences in sound between all those high end drums. They are subtle. Now, once you start adding bass, guitar, vocals on top of that mix, the subtleties are less noticeable. It’s really all in: good heads, tuning, and the player. DW, like every company out there have to sell us their product. Hence, the talking. It’s a business. They’re in the business of selling drums. Great drummer. Great engineer. A lot of the time, that’s all that’s needed to move products. If they were to not talk, the company knows that the average consumer would not be able to hear big differences in sound. Again, this isn’t me crapping on DW or other companies. It’s just the reality of business. All companies make beautiful products. Rant over. Lol

Paul,I've owned several all maple kits and one maple/ mahogany kit. They had the clear coated single ply heads on top, clear ambassadors on the bottom of toms and floor toms. The bass drum had the factory clear coated version of a p3,front head with 6 little vent holes and DW pillow inside. I assure you for my ears that's when they sounded and tunned up the best, especially when they went to the true hoops. DW builds top shelf drums that's for sure.I just prefer single ply heads.happy drumming.

“Hey, let’s do an A/B drum sound comparison, but let’s talk over most of the actual sound of the drums...that’ll be GREAT!!”

      Hi,
Please check out the description for the video. It has a link to videos without discussion. This videos intention was for our artists to compare and discuss the drums. Thanks

@@dwdrums The other videos are not A/B comparisons. They are just the individual drumsets. I think most drummers prefer to hear the same groove being played in the same video on different kits so We can hear real time the sounds differences in the different species of wood. Seems as though you were doing that in this A/B comparison but with the near constant narration. I believe that is where your complaints are coming from regarding this video. That said, I love my DW performance kids and all the DW hardware I have. Keep on doing what you’re doing

Great video to hear somebody talk about drums, not actually LISTEN to any drums. Was that not obvious to these DW folks?

Wow, they really are talking throughout the entire video

Yes, your talking and the high pitched ring of the snares just ruined what could have been a wonderful comparison.
I want to buy a DW kit and I'm considering cherry, maple SSC and oak.
This video could have been so helpful.

DW's absolute great kits.. I love Maple /Birch or Maple/Walnut... Great Hybrids.. I guess that's why Mapex went that route... I have an Armory.. Love it really surprised at how great it sounded.. Looking at a higher end kits this video opened my eyes a lot.. The Mapex Saturn V MH is an amazing kit for the Price... If I Went DW I'm going with what I think is the most incredible sound ever!! I'm going Purple Heart

Birch or Cherry all day for kick and Toms with an Oak Snare. Like they say, Oak is surprisingly a great choice for snares.

I noticed more lows in your voices, when you were talking about the oak and a bit more sustain in your voices, when discussing the maple. Now, when you described the birch, a little more mellow words were used. Great voices though ! 😁

The differences are subtle. Slightly more highs on the Birch. Generally they all sound close and no need to worry about the differences. They all sound good. Whatever difference mostly is felt and heard by the tone critical drummer. To the audience those differences are blurred. Drum wood comparisons are often hyped for marketing. DWs are great drums as are Sonor, Yamaha, Pearl and Tama. Drums on a high end level need no hype. I'm speaking from my experience with DW Collectors and Yamaha Pheonix drums. They're both great sounding drums. They sound different like good guitars sound different. A matter of personal preference. There is no real maple or birch sound. In the real world it's hard to tell in a blind test. Knowing is hearing. But not knowing is something else.

I’m curious what you were thinking continuously talking over the demo's? Seriously? It's really not about your subjective interpretation-- it's about ours. Thanks a lot. Making it as difficult as possible to hear any A/B differences.

Great idea, but I also wish it had a bit less talking. I am surprised as to how good the oak sounded. I’ve always known that maple and birch were great woods for drums.
