Swearengen had a real soft spot for Blazinov. 4 things made Al feel this way- 1. Balzinov had seen his parents murdered and thus the Orphan Al had some notice there. 2. He showed deep sympathy for the Hooples as "working men." Whom while Al ridiculed, he also valued as his customers and base of the town. 3. Blazinov had shown he would not let the threat of torture stop him from keeping a secret. 4. He showed a willingness to abandom that principle of confidentiality to fight a threat to the camp. Al really warmed to him more than most.
Its a shame Blazanov couldn't be in the movie, even for like a little scene like Tom Nuttall was. I know he was the telegram operator, and there was a phone in the thoroughfare at that point, but surely they could've found some way for his character to turn up. I mean hell, they made Con Stapleton a fucking reverend so he could come back, wouldn't have been too far fetched to make Blazanov the owner of Seth's hardware concern, or of a different shop, or have him take over Charlie's mail route, would've been more believable than a genuinely scummy degenerate suddenly finding God and becoming a reverend in his 70s 😂
Silas peeks therein, hears Al taking the name of Hawkeye in tones of wrathful vanity, and beats a hasty and adroitly-conceived retreat without anyone the wiser who is party to the excoriation of his erstwhile companion.
Maybe, but it is hard to tell more stories, without resorting to pure fiction like the (good) movie. Hearst wins, Sol and Bullock sell out, Swegen dies in a ditch. I was ok with what we got
Deawood and Carnivale were my favorite 2 hours of television every Sunday night for a couple years. Perfect mix of history and fiction with impeccable dialogue.
Okay can I just say how good I love Ian McShane when he raise he voice when he gets Mad! He's indeed did some amazing acting in Deadwood. This show will always be number 1 in the world... 😊👏
It was a GREAT show. The movie they put out a few months ago was horrible....but the weekly show was brilliant. Even Ian McShane said it was "the best gig I ever had" when accepting his Golden Globe for playing Swearengen!
The amount of times I've watched all 3 seasons, I can't even count. I could literally start from episode 1 again each time I finish the third and the movie. It's the language that keeps me coming back. If the show had been written in a modern vernacular or the kind of "western" dialogue one often hears, I just don't think it would have had the resonance it has. Every single conversation in that series has depths to return to over and over again.
Tell me about it...minus Richardson it should be a blockbuster (by HBO standards). I wanna see the town burn down. Historically, that did occur. It would also be cool to see Hearst take 15 bullets in the chest. All hail Deadwood!! Amazing to see so many fans respond to this video 13 years after the show was canceled.
Just the best ever male leading role performance in tv-series history by far. Bryan Cranston's(B.B), Hugh Laurie's(House) and Kevin Spacey's(H.O.C) weren't/aren't even in Ian's league.
Agreed, 2nd and 3rd place goes to Tony Soprano and then Walter White from Breaking Bad. . .after those 3 the remaining 7 of the top ten are way off in the distance. In fact, I would even nominate for 4th place E B Farnum from Deadwood
Tony Soprano is one of my favorites, many from the Sopranos are, like Paulie, and Phil Leotardo, but Al Swearengen is just on another level. The dialogue is just magical. You guys should try Black Sails, and Penny Dreadful. There is a lot of art in their dialogue, and many powerful characters.
Just seeing Adam’s reminds of that down-for-anything super hot super spy Mrs Iswringhausen! DSL for days, with the perfect mentality able to fit into any role play she’s asked to fulfill. ❤️💔❤️💔In the words of Demolition “ Oh, what a rush!”

@0:54! That looks is PRICELESS! 'If this were any other moment, I would smack the hell out of you for not understanding a fucking rhetorical question. But, right now, I'm so pissed off, I'm going to answer you. Not because I feel the need to explain. I'm just so pissed, I have to say it out loud!' Ian McShane's Al Swearengen is easily one of the best characters in TV history. You gotta love him, you just can't help it.
whats even funnier about this scene.. in the last scenes of the show when Hearst is leaving camp.. you can see Hawkeye with the group he gathered, including the midget.
yeah but they did give us 5 years of The Wire, 6 seasons of The Sopranos, Game of Thrones seems to have their full support. But I agree we needed one more year to close out the story lines.
Silas peaking in and then quickly ducking out when he hears Al going off about Hawkeye😂😂
Swearengen is probably the greatest tv character of all time
Villian? Hero? Father figure? Pimp? Genius? Fool?
Yeah Al is pretty unbelieveable.

DONT WE HAVE ENOUGH FUCKIN IMPONDERABLES?
Definitely
Hing fuckin' dai
'Please do not strike me' Lmao, I've been using that line for nearly a year, whenever someone goes on a rant. Hands up too lol.
He knows.
Ian McShane’s Al Swearengen is a god among wordsmiths. He weaves a tapestry of obscenity and prose with a skill unmatched.
His speech is like words unspoken by men, it most come from a greater being. But maybe that is himself, the mighty Swear Engine. I know not.

"A superfluous trumpeting"

It's very good, as all Swearengen scenes are, but this is about his thirty fifth best rant.
Truth.
the 'Misfortune' talk with Merrick was great.

Canceling this show was like cancelling the Sopranos. This show was magical and it had a lead on par with Gandolfini.

We need a compilation of Al talking about Hawkeye. Every time he hears that name he goes on a rant about how much he really hates the guy.
This has gotta be one of the best shows ever. Good writing good actor's and no cliché relationship drama.
