    My bonus room does not have any attic access to install any new wiring. This video shows how you can install a single switch that will control your ceiling fan and light independently.
    Here is a link to this universal switch: amzn.to/3jL3Kpr
    NOTE: The product link above seems to not be available. Here is another option: amzn.to/3YQ7f0B

    Thank you so much! This is just the solution I was looking for. We bought an old Lake house in PA, and wanted to change out the bathroom exhaust fan to a more modern one that also has a light, and have no access to rewire w/o tearing apart sheetrock. I just purchased the newer switch from the link you provided

    That was informative. It also made me think that the next time I have to work on the bell housing above a ceiling fan, I'll use cling wrap or Press-and-Seal or something like that to cover the top of the fan motor. I might still end up hunting for the screw on the floor, but at least it won't be in the motor. Hmm. Maybe it would stick to the Press-and-Seal? Or, if I'm doing this a lot, I could get some 8.5x11 sheet magnets from Hobby Lobby and put them on top of the fan motor, under the cling wrap.

    • @DIYBRY
      @DIYBRY  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah. Might have been a good idea to put some painters tape over the fan housing holes to prevent that screw from falling in. Thanks goodness for that magnet.

    Good video, though 2 small recommendations. One: emphasize to people how important it is to turn off power. I almost missed it as you said it very subtly. Two: Always twist pigtails together before capping to prevent any loose connections.
    And also wondered why your ground is red. Are you sure that wasnt a second switchleg to your fan and just had no ground? Ground is usually green or bare copper (if romex).

    • @DIYBRY
      @DIYBRY  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure where you are seeing a red wire. The ground from the switch is a copper wire. The ground in the ceiling fan are two greens (fan and ceiling mount) and a copper from the ceiling wires.

    • @wfemp_4730
      @wfemp_4730 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      And when twisting them, do so in the direction in which the wire nut will be rotated.

    • @DIYBRY

      The remote does not have a direction switch. What is the brand of your fan? Do you happen to know the model number of your fan?

  • @jeremyhart6099
    @jeremyhart6099 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @DIYBRY
      @DIYBRY  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This video show you how to get the fan and light to work separately if you don't have a separate wiring for the fan. So this should show you exactly what you need to do.

    before i move into condo, there was one knob switch . one for fan and other for lights. lights are not attached to fan it separate. After i move in i noticed electrician change switch to flip only, which operates lights only and fan is no longer working or any power going in? how can i fix this? by buying new 2 or 3 way switch or something?

    • @DIYBRY
      @DIYBRY  ปีที่แล้ว

      You will first have to find the wires. Something I can’t help with as I cannot see your setup. If you find the wire that’s would control the fan, I would add a new switch just for the fan. Otherwise, there are single switches you can find online. amzn.to/3oEqYSO

    Why does the switch unit need to be wired to the ground wire? Is that doing anything? Surely the battery is the only power being supplied.
    Is it to protect if another hot wire inadvertently touches the back of the unit?

    • @dantheveganman
      @dantheveganman 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@josepharico5343 no you need to wire them altogether because that way the power can flow from the cable that has the power to be able to power the fan, if you cap them of individually you have an incomplete circuit if that's what your asking.

    • @DIYBRY
      @DIYBRY  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      One on the black wires running into that box was for the hall switch on the other side of the wall. If I capped them off individually, then the other switch would not work. Just have to do what best for your particular situation.
