Excellent, excellent video.. I liked the top down view of everything. I am replacing 2 wire with 3 wire so that light and fan can be controlled separately. This helps tremendously. It seems as though I should be able to do it. I'd call an electrician, except I need this done 4 times.. if I can just learn it once, I can quickly/cheaply replicate it to the 3 other rooms
This is the best explanation of the various set-ups one might encounter. This will help me fix the ceiling fan that terribly installed by the previous home owner. Thank you!
Thanks! I had to dig to find a video with this exact wiring situation, but this is exactly what I needed! I like the view of the wires...You made it very clear and simple.
Great video, nice & slow & easy to follow for us rookies! But, please add a "how to" wire a duel switches, please. Nothing too fancy, One switch for the fan, (maybe with a speed control), & and a regular on off for the light. Thanks!
Asking, because I am wiring for the future. Just have a light for now, but want the 12/3 to be in the box when/if I put a fan light fixture in the room. (Replacing OLD groundless romex type wires in the attic.) : /
I really appreciate this video thank you so much I’m installing two ceiling fans and light together but I only have 14-2 wire running from electrical box to fixture so both fan and light it’s being controlled by a dimmer switch I know it’s better with 14-3 but in this case that’s what I have so thanks again for the video very helpful
Someone told me a loud out of a fan (for two ceiling LED light fixtures) is not recommended and I should run independent dedicated wires. Should I run a separate wire for the light fixture or can I use the fan 14-3 for the load out just like the fan built in light for additional ceiling light that isn’t part of thr fan?
Amazing video. Just picked up a fan, used with no wall switch. Figured out I need to order a "2 wire" switch from the supplier. Looks like there are way more options for 3 wires but unfortunately I have two romex reaching the fan, but only one leg from the switch. Second romex is constant hot. Must have been to give the home owner an option of operating fan from the fan or from the switch.
Very helpful video. I will give this a try . first, before I hire an electrician to rip out my wall and add a second switch like the guy at home Depot said was the only solution 🙄
thanks for sharing! The directions for the fan is not using the red wire only white to white and black to Black. Just wondering if it will still work the same with a switch like that?
I bought the Lutron combo fan and light dimmer but having some issues. I connected like how you show around the 4:16 mark. However, my line in hot wire is shared with another 3 way light switch that is on another breaker. I can only turn on my fan light with the new combo switch and not the fan. My remote control can turn on thr fan and fan light but the switch can only turn on the fan light. Not sure what I am doing wrong. Fan wired as: fan blue wire to red, fan black wire to black, fan white to white, fan green to copper.
Thanks......My main line in only has black, white, ground wires it has two switches , how do l wire a ceiling fan wires on fan are black, blue, white, and green...???????
My situation: In ceiling fan, brown and white wire come in hot, another goes out to switch hot. Not labeled., brown is neutral, white is hot. At the switch, i have 2 black poles on either side and 2 silver on left side. I hooked up white (hot) to solo right pole. Brown to light. Light works. I fed a black a white wire through ceiling. Black to silver pole, hooked it up to blue which controls my fan. With the white wire, I dont know where to connect it to at the switch. But i wired it up with the neutrals in the ceiling fan. Not working. Tried a few different ways.
I got the same issue I have 4 coming in with a remote controlled fan having 4 wires and the fan having 4 wires bit the kicker is on instructions it says black with black white with white and the 2 left from switch one color goes to the same one from fan and controller but in the end leaving 1 alone that's coming in im assuming it goes to neutral but thought this video would help its for 3 coming in I have 4.
In the box I have three white wires which are all connected, then I have a switch that has two black wires it is a simple switch one black wire on top and one black wire on the bottom. The black wire which is on top goes to a conglomerate which adds to other black wires. And then of course there are the copper grounds. But I want to hook up is a switch which has four wires the black green ground, red and yellow., In order to separate the fan from the light
I’m looking for a video on how to wire a ceiling fan when the power comes from the panel to the ceiling box first and then over to a single pole switch on the wall last. I have only found videos where power comes from the panel to the light switch first and then up to the ceiling. At my in-laws house, in their master bedroom, the power from the panel goes to the ceiling box 1st and then over to the single pole wall switch last. I am not familiar with wiring a ceiling fan in this scenario.
Very god explanation, but I have a red, black , white and ground coming out from the ceiling to connect to my pendant light. The red and black are hot. I connected ground and both to each one of the fixture and left white alone, yet doesn’t work yet
Hi there, tried to replace a ceiling fan for my parents. There’s 2 sets of black wires & 2 sets of white wires coming from the ceiling but no Ground wires. What should I do?
I would love to see this from the ceiling fan. I have 2 wires connecting the light and fan motor. I forgot to label them and for the life of me I can't figure out the order. I did have a black and white line pigtailed which I thought was a no no.
Most fans have reverse polarity protection. If you hook it up the wrong way it simply does nothing. They're designed to push air in one direction and the manufacturers have ensured that's the only way they'll work.
In my wall wires have wires black hot, black not hot, purple. my hunter fan and light switch model 27182 has wires blue, black, red, yellow-green . Which wires go together?
Not covered is: One combination is where BOTH wires coming into the box are 14-2. Whites wired together, grounds wired together and (with current fan/light switch) the 2 black wires coming off the switch wired individually to the 2 black wires one coming from the breaker box and one going to the fan/light. What then? Thanks
I just blew up this same switch trying to wire mine up correctly.. my fan has remote control and can’t get the fan to work on the speed control but the light will..I hooked my switch up exactly like the one in your video and just can’t get it to work..try, try and try again
What would you do if you were replacing a light with a fan that you would want to use a double switch on but the wire running from the existing light to the box was only a single hot wire not a double hot wire?
Unless you can run an additional 2 wire (e.g. 12/2 or 14/2) as shown in his 3rd example @6:30 , you would have to wire the fan motor and light together to the single hot wire coming from the switch and then use the pull chains to control the light and fan independently.
Hi Jordan. The switch has a hard-wired black wire coming from it. The black "hot" line-in is connected to the hard-wired black wire from the switch. There is no pigtail in that particular example. I hope that helps.
@@SaveMoneyTV 1.) You'll have to forgive me I'm a bit of a slow learner. I see a black (hot) coming from the panel and once it reaches the switch you appear to have placed a yellow wirenut around the tip and I assume the other black wire coming out of that wirenut would be tied to the switch itself? I'm other words would your incoming hot simply be connected directly to the switch? (As you say with no pigtails?) 2.) And what would you do if you had a second switch or reciprocal box in the same room? Would you pigtail the incoming hot (from the panel) and send the pigtail further down to the next switch?
Very informative video but the switch you have on the link in the video description is not the same switch being used in the video . Can you please provide the correct switch or update the link ?
I literally have a switch with two black wires one green wire and then I got two red wires coming out of my wall and two black ones and a ground wire I have no idea where to begin
Hello - great video, thanks. I have a question. Where did you find a switch that you can adjust fan speed and toggle light On/Off (no dimmer)? I can’t seem to locate that switch. Do you have a part number? Thanks in advance!
My pig line is blue? Can it be any color? It's my hot. I'll get a zapped line, and that goes to the fans' ground that goes on the bolt or use both grounds? aye?
Hi i installed a ceiling fan there use to be only one switch for the light on the wall but there already was red white black and cooper were coming from the ceiling junction box and then i connected the fan black to black blue to red white to white and cooper to cooper but in the wall switch the wire that is hot the black one i connect that to both switch and connect the black one that comes from ceiling fan to one switch and the red one that comes from fan light to another switch everything works but the problem is that when i use two switch instead of one which and the hot wire that was going to 2 switches were also giving electricity to wall outlets and it was connected to some other wires in ceiling junction box since i used 2 regular switches now it lost its continuity and now some of the wall outlet that use to get its power from that are not working unless that i flip the switch and turn the fan on IS THERE ANY WAY OR SWITCH TO FIX THAT Thanks
Hello, I am trying to install a ceiling fan/light dimmer. However my load out (to fixture)wire only has three wires. A black wire, white wire, and a ground wire. There is no fourth red wire. So I’m not sure what controls the light and fan motor. What do I do in the situation? Also, I noticed when I opened up the previous switch that then black wires from the “line in” and “load out” were capped together instead of the white wires. Would this be incorrect or does my neutral wires happen to be black in instead of white.
Hi, i got 4 ceiling fans that came with remote control modules. I asked my electrician to install them bypassing the remote control module because i wanted to control them just by the wall switch. Guess what? All of them burned! I need help on how to correctly wiring them. The electrician says that the capacitor is on the remote control module, and when it was removed, then the fan didnt had capacitor and got burned. Please help!!! I already got new motors as replacement, but still want to avoid the remote control modules.
I have two hot wires (black) two neutral wires (white) and two copper wires coming from a single ceiling light hole from which a hanging dimmable light once was. I wanted to switch to a flush mount ceiling light which as you know I'm sure only has one black wire one white wire and one copper wire. So I hooked both hot wires from the ceiling to the single black wire on the light fixture and both neutral wires from the ceiling to the single white wire on the light fixture and the copper wire from the light fixture to the green screw on the mount. I put the bulbs in, turn the power back on and the lights stayed on, literally could not turn them off. the dimmable light switch did not work when it worked for the previous light. I hope this makes sense, probably not. I need help, I don't know what to do
i bought the same fan and light dimmer to find only 2 black wires. The ceiling fan and light is currently connected to a universal intertek 99111 kit. When i removed the wall plate i found out it was wireless and behind it were the to black wires connected. (my house was built in the 20s) I would love any help.
New fans (with lights) come with manual and wiring diagram, you can check wiring for single switch or double switches. The red wire normally is the hot for the lights, or sometimes depending on manufacturer comes in blue wire
The key to all this is knowing which wire is your incoming hot power source. Buy yourself a voltage reader. Also learn how electric circuits work because each situation is going to be different.
This video really emphasizes the wall switch. This seems more about the switch and less about the fan, but the title emphasizes the fan. This video is not helpful.

Thank you, I'm glad you found it easy to understand. Thanks for watching!
after 1000 videos I finally understand, excellent video. Thank You!!!!!
Great to hear! Thanks for watching!
This was the best explained youtube video. I search forever, and you helped me fix the ringing in our fan.
Glad it helped, thanks for watching!

Every "How To" video should be this simple! Very well done!!
Thank you! I'm glad it was helpful.
excellent video make very easy understand
This is the video we all needed. Thank you!!

Can you hardwire a cieling fan from an outlet and run cord to the cieling

Most welcome 😊
How would I do this without the switch? If I just wanted to run constant power to the fan/light
GREAT THANK YOU
You are welcome, thanks for watching!
Do have any videos on receptacles Crossing from another one while it runs through the device boxes
Could a second switch be added on a different wall?
Hi there, tried to replace a ceiling fan for my parents. There’s 2 sets of black wires & 2 sets of white wires coming from the ceiling but no Ground wires. What should I do?
I have the same problem

What would happen if you wire the fan wire and the light wire opposite ? Thanks !
Most fans have reverse polarity protection. If you hook it up the wrong way it simply does nothing. They're designed to push air in one direction and the manufacturers have ensured that's the only way they'll work.
It would trip the breaker as soon as turns on. Worst case scenario it catches fire.
😪 my switch only has white and black wires. It didn’t even have ground till I put one there.
Don’t know to wire them for two switches then😔
Yup. Just what I needed. Cheers!
Glad it was useful. Cheers!
This video helped out a lot! Thank you!
Glad it helped!
As simple as that 👍
Thank you for watching Carlos. I hope it was helpful.
In my wall wires have wires black hot, black not hot, purple.
my hunter fan and light switch model 27182 has wires blue, black, red, yellow-green .
Which wires go together?
Yellow wire, red and black wire are hot wires, you can share the yellow wire with the black wire.
Great video, thank you 👍
You're welcome. Glad it was helpful!

You deserve more subs
Thank you Samirite! They will come...Everything takes time. In the meantime please like and share. :-)
Here in philippines there are only 2 wires both black what to do? Our ceiling fan came from USA but we dont have neutral and ground wire here
What is the orange wire for
I just blew up this same switch trying to wire mine up correctly.. my fan has remote control and can’t get the fan to work on the speed control but the light will..I hooked my switch up exactly like the one in your video and just can’t get it to work..try, try and try again
What brand is that light switch? Great video..
I shot the video a while ago so I'm not 100% sure but I believe the were Leviton switches. I buy their products whenever possible.

5:50, Why did you pigtail the incoming hot on the second example?
Hi Jordan. The switch has a hard-wired black wire coming from it. The black "hot" line-in is connected to the hard-wired black wire from the switch. There is no pigtail in that particular example. I hope that helps.
