I was there, stood amongst the French fans with my friend. We were both foreign exchange students living in Orleans who'd made the trip and found ourselves in the wrong area. Somehow it because obvious that were England fans but there was no tension. I recall that when the second brilliant Platini goal went in, every Frenchman stood up and applauded. Suddenly all eyes were on us so we too (somewhat grudgingly) stood up and clapped the Frenchman's genius, earning us approving winks from all concerned!
even without a world cup champion medal, the Platini's France team has been my all time favorite national team. so exciting to watch even a friendly game.. the days where international matches ,world cup provided the top quality football, every star& leader of the team gave their best shots
Exceptionnel. La complicité Platini-Giresse. Une merveille pour les yeux. Et qui donnait le ton À TOUTE L'ÉQUIPE DE FRANCE. Quel bonheur d'avoir connu cela.

What is interesting about this match is it was built up by the English newspapers and media as a battle between Platini and Hoddle to see who would come out on top. So, Platini scores a great free kick and header. True, Hoddle scored great free kicks but not headers. Platini scored the first goal in the centre forward position. Hoddle was never going to make a run off the ball into the centre forward position. So in reality, there was no comparison between the two players. Platini could play centre forward, score headers, be an assist king in mdifeild, made lots of runs off the ball, play with his back to goal. Hoddle couldn't do any of those things. Not having a go at Hoddle, a player I liked a lot, but sadly just demontsrates yet again the media we have over here in England wasn't as kwoledgable as they should have been. By the way, what an incredible free kick!
Platini was on a different level to Hoddle. Platini along with Maradona & Zico. Where the three best players of the 1980s. Deluded English football media as always.
France was built around Platini. England wasn't built around Hoddle. England tend to be built around English football's obsession with the goal scoring midfielder (Peters/Robson/Platt/Gerrard/Lampard)
I would have loved to have seen this French team against the Brazil team of the same era... Platini, Giresse,Tigana,Fernandes vs Zico,Socrates,Falcao,Eder,Toninho Cerezo. Man what a match that would have been. In 81 France was without Platini and Brazil was without Zico when they met in Par de France. France got overrun by a BRILLIANT Brazil team. In 86 everyone was on the wrong side of 30..Falcao,Eder didnt play, Socrates was slow and old. Zico was injured and .........old.
5:07 "Once more the goalkeeping is tremendous" Yeah, a routine stop followed by a howler! What was he playing at? 3:396:13 I see that even six years before his disastrous World Cup, Shilton was still diving about two seconds after the ball had passed him. LOL I saw Shilton in the flesh when he played for Derby but I'm just too young to remember him playing for England. Can those born before the early 80s tell me if he used to get stick during his England career and if people ever questioned his place in the side? People my age and younger have grown up to believe that he was one of the all-time great 'keepers and was right up there with Gordon Banks but he hasn't looked anything special to me whenever I've seen clips of him playing for England.
Shilton always seemed to get a pass from fans and media alike whilst his rival Clemence received far too much criticism. Clemence big mistake was letting Kenny Dalglish hit a weak shot through his legs in the 1976 Home International Championships. For this he was constantly reminded at every league ground. Shilton on the other hand dived over Domarski's shot v Poland in 73 which cost us a place in the 74 world cup. He then was out jumped by tiny Diego Maradona to knock us out of the 86 tournament and finally allowed Brehmes blooped free kick to go over his head at Italia 90. But he never got any blame. He was a very good goalkeeper. But he cost England badly.

Utter bullshit. French teams have always been influenced by french players from different origins. In 1984, you had platini, tigana, janvion, tresor, fernandez, amoros, stopyra....

JasonEaton spot on. Go back further in time and, voila Just Fontaine was born in Marrakesh and Raymond Kopa had Polish ancestry. You also forgot Bruno Bellone from the Eighties.
JasonEaton go further back in time, I meant to say... While we are at it, people are quick to forget that not only was the great Michel Platini the son of two recent Italian immigrants but he played his best club footy years in Serie A which, at the time, was the moneybags of the game.
