    This is an interview of the highest calibre. Helen Pluckrose presents the issues we face in the task of rescuing the best of our culture with forensic clarity and intelligence. This interview is laden with memorable quotes and phrases that succinctly summarise the forces at play. It takes real intelligence and clarity of thought to present the complexities that underlie the tectonic plates of cultural dissonance with the accessibility that she achieves.

      Ironic isn't it. Ms Pluckrose, like James Lindsay, was attracted toward her unusual road in pursuit of the "new atheist" movement. (You could add Stephen Pinker to the group too.) They were attacking theism with argument - like good children of the Enligtenment - which put them in the cross hairs of the new postmodernists who don't seem to require reason. Christians also need to affirm objective truth. So here we are allies - Christians and atheists against the nihilist barbarians so prominent in our moment in the public arena.

    Helen Pluckrose is perhaps the most articulate and nuanced thinker I have heard on the impact of postmodernism in the academy, especially the humanities, as well as the larger culture. I look forward to her book. Thank you so much for the quality of this interview.

      Recent events and the blatant hysteria have shown me the stupidity of my own tribalism and ideological loyalties. It is great to see people of all creeds and leanings speaking up against the mob mentality that has taken over huge swathes of society. I think one positive outcome of the last 10-15 years has been a resurgence of people trying to genuinely rediscover rationality and objectivity. who knows, we could be on the cusp of a re- enlightenment.

      @ciganyweaverandherperiwink6293 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@DP-cd5wr Fantastic comment, thanks for bothering to post :) What I'm noticing is that the old terminology I grew up with, just definitions and basic understandings of what it means to be 'left' and 'right' for example, don't really exist anymore. I can't use the same terms I would have in conversation in the 1990's for example. They mean nothing in 2020. This 'new Hard Left' have nothing to do with what it meant to be a 'left-wing liberal' when I was growing up. I don't know what the hell to call these Antifa-supporting, intersectionist, neo-Marxist who are going about behaving like textbook fascists whilst proclaiming themselves to be 'anti-fa' and ' here to burn books for the common good', here to censor things 'for the common good', here to rewrite language, law and indeed history. The goal posts have been surreptitiously moved a few inches, as if by thieves in the night. Finally I noticed too. Many of what were once accepted as traditionally basic Liberal values would now qualify a person as part of a 'right wing'. It's a really discombobulating time to be political engaged. But like yourself, I'm finding new understandings of the mechanisms at play within this culture war so in that way, you and I are both more philosophical and into transcending the tribal wars, analysing it all instead of enthusiastically throwing ourselves into every emotionally charged, sanctimonious little skirmish going.

    I taught and encouraged the range of Critical Theory as a way or lens to see, interpret and understand my discipline area, Urban Design.
    I still support people experimenting with any and all theories, but there needs to be reality checks on them believing that the lens is more than it is.

    Below are two separate quotes from Orwell and I quote verbatim:

    .......
    “For perhaps ten years past I have had some grasp of the real nature of capitalist society. I have seen British imperialism at work in Burma, and I have seen something of the effects of poverty and unemployment in Britain…. One has got to be actively a Socialist, not merely sympathetic to Socialism, or one plays into the hands of our always active enemies.”

    There is already a strong push back against current cultural orthodoxy in the University setting and the pandemic is bringing it faster. People have gotten pretty cynical about the role of colleges role in determining policy or improving lives and the DNC has lost a lot of respect on the left as well. I think so many of us are politically and socially homeless that Bernie's popularity was just a hint of what we are hungry for and we all watched as the superficial use of identity politics torpedoed his campaign. The continued importance of the reality of disparities is also pushing this force in society. We need paths of solidarity not shame.

    Hello - Instead of loaded Language and Controlling the Narrative let's just be, body language is soo under-estimated and actually shows how we feel and think and is universal.
    "Can't rely on anything" - Let's just be mindful.
    Identity is about personalities of the mind. - The mind is subjective how can we create a society around it, let learn how we learn, and how we behave. And start ensuring we have a fair and equal system for our children so they are able to create a fairer world. This has to be imperative.

      If I were recruiting for M16 I'd pull you in for a stealthy interview, LOL. You have precisely the kind of eye for details that many others would miss entirely. I love it! But I confess, I don't know what that was either now that I've gone and studied it. :D

      Stephen Pinker, Peter Hitchens, Jonathan Haidt, James Lindsay, Peter Boghossian, Bret Weinstein, Sam Harris. These people come from very diverse backgrounds, some are avowed leftists, while others are firmly on the right, yet they have all done remarkable work dismantling post-modernism

    Helen young people should not go to University and study the humanities. Why waste your life when these university departments are over run with these lunatics. Starve them of oxygen and they will have to reform! The worst part is you are still expecting people to spend a fortune for this privilege! ridiculous!!!!
