    just another pile of guff to go wrong ,, at the end of 2000s late 1990s Toyota engines and merc engines did 300k with no bother and great miles to the gallon , now engines dont do 60k miles without exploding ,, is that really progress , any emissions saved must be lost again in making new engines . So are we really going forwards at all , or just heading faster towards the scrap yard ,,, are we not better off making things that last , and dont need recycling , or replacing in the name of green savings , but hey wheres the profit in that.

      You are so right, few people just look for hp and add how fuel efficient their vehicle is. Never worry about going high mileage because they trade it in at100 000 .

      My 71 Chevelle Big Block doesn’t need these complicated failure prone gadgets, just raw cubic inches , all 460 of them.

    So you solve an engine performance issue, by making the engine weaker and prone to mechanical failure? ...and they say engineered obsolesce doesn't exist.

    Lets add weight to the top end of the reciprocating mass. Brilliant, more crap to fail.

    The germans clearly missed the memo about the simplest design is the best. Nissan's Variable Compression system is already complex enough. More complexity means more maintainance and more to go wrong.

    The best design is simple. The added weight, complexity, and parts that can fail, will not be worth whatever gains are realized. The addition of an electric oil pump sounds like a _terrible_ idea.

    I dont know which generation of VCR is refered to here, but the current one doesn't need oil pressure to actuate. The valves exist yes, but what they do is create and escape path for the oil. The position is held by a one way valve that locks one of the plungers in place.

    So, in reality, it is a variation of the Atkinson cycle but with more cost and complexity.

      I think all the pistons rods are set to the same length despite being at different strokes so it can't be used for an atkinson cycle. mitsubishi i understand has a vcr engine with linkages more like the old atkinson cycle patent. I like the idea, but i think it would be more reliable to move the head and cylinders instead.

    This should be done at the crank bearing, not at the rods. This metod just ad weight, rotationary mass and complexity.

      Or just move the cranc up n down a bit.One point of failure and same for all piston

    Here’s another idea mate the engine to the drive train through variable gears to optimise the rpm.
    Oh hang on they’ve done that!

    Why not just move the crankshaft up a bit? It can also then be easy and same for all engine. One point of failure and easy to integrate

    Why just dont put a compression chamber right inside of the bore to change the compression ratio forom stock to low

    Why do they make everything so overly complex and therefore less reliable and more expensive.
    We need cheap cheap efficient transport that you can fix yourself if you need to.
    I don't understand all these electric hypercars kicking out 1000+hp, we need something to get us to work and out and about, not driving distance very often that stays charged from home for a week and is enough to hit the legal speed limit, and it doesn't need to hit 70 in 3 milliseconds, 8 would do.
    I understand the trickle down effect of engineering development, I do it for a living but can't someone make a new people's car for about £10k that can hit these requirements.

    More moving parts bad for reliability prone to engine failure sorry but its a dumb idea not to mention the price and maintenance costs.

    This is so German. Heinously complex for the sake of not much. The downsides of more computer control, higher parts count, reduced reliability as well as greater wear, reduced engine response and less RPM from increased reciprocating mass it really sounds like a dead end to me.
