  • In this video from the November 2019 Art of Fearless Intimacy intensive in Santa Monica CA, John and Kendra describe practices and communication tools for opening your heart to your partner, even when you can't fully identify your feelings.
It's hard to unwind emotional history, trauma, numbness and closure, so there is no substitute for practice. Learn to be in touch with your Primary Emotion, or the emotion happening in the moment, by doing embodiment-based, feminine non-linear movement practice. This will help you develop more sensitivity and awareness of your feelings in the moment.
In the meantime, if you are unable to fully identify your primary emotion, you can let your partner know you're feeling something, even if you don't know exactly what it is or what is causing it, and you can ask for help. For example, you could say, "I'm angry, but I don't know why. Would you help me?" Or "I'm feeling something and I want to shut down. Please help." That's actually a gesture of connection. You don't need to have it all figured out in order to open your heart to your partner in a moment.
