Back to December is written as an 'apology song'' to Taylor Lautner saying that she's sorry for hurting him. This is obviously a really personal song, referring to the memories and laughs they shared, but also mentioning the darker side of the relationship: Taylor L must have acted similar to the way taylor S exes had acted, but his intentions were different. Because she had been hurt by her past loves, taylor S naturally assumed that he was going to hurt her, too, even though he wasn't, so in order to keep her heart from getting broken, she dumped him before he had a chance to hurt her.

Taylor Lautner proved to be a rarity in a world where most people see others as replaceable and give the bare minimum as a result. He clearly loved Taylor in such a pure manner that she eventually saw how pure it was and that is how this song came to be. He’s happily married now and I’m sure Taylor agrees that if anyone deserves happiness, it was him.

I'm pretty sure the line 'and how you held me in your arms that September night, the first time you ever saw me cry' (3:23) is referring to the 2009 VMA's (which occurred in September). If I recall correctly, Taylor Lautner, who this song is written for, was on stage with her during the time Kanye interrupted her speech. This line reveals that they evidently went backstage and HE was the one who made her feel okay again after that humiliating spectacle.
