  • Passat & Audi 1.8 Turbo motors are prone to clogged oil pick-ups. The Audi has a transverse mounted motor so it is very easy to drop the pan. The Passat motor is mounted longitudinally and the pan sits right on top of a crossmember. It is very expensive to have it repaired or takes a many hours to do yourself. I did it once. This time I got creative. Next time it will be a 30 minuet job.

    I tapped the holes and used 10-32 screws. RTV as a gasket. I have had to clean it again. Worked great.

    Hi, Wayne! Truly a brilliant idea... THANK YOU!! I second cTTbLaKeMan's comment! Some questions.... 1) Any idea why you have had multiple clogged oil pick-up problems? 2) What specific symptoms were you experiencing when the pickup was clogged? I would assume low oil pressure light and/or engine noise(s) due to low oil pressure. 3) Did you install / use an oil pressure gauge, and if so, what oil pressures were you getting with a clogged screen, AND, 4) was the low oil pressure (with pickup clogged) most noticeable at idle, or at higher engine speeds? And 5) was the problem worse with cold/thick oil, or with hot/lower viscosity oil? Thanks in advance, David

    I just had to do this job. While I applaud his unique way to go about this definitely not for a normal diy person. To many variables that could go wrong. I did this job to include the oil pump on a 1.8t in 2 hours.
    That included the oil pump. I did decide to use the felpro gasket instead of the sealant the use. Makes the repeat job easier. I had to drop my pan twice due to pieces of the pcv elbow getting stuck in the oil pickup tube. Of my new pick up.

    I tapped the pan with 10-32 self sealing machine screws I used silicone RTV for the silicone sealant. Just make sure you're right up your finger with a towel around the inside to pick up any chips that might have got in there

      Wayne's Stuff so the screws just screw into the pan? You didn't run threads or Helicoil?

    Wayne you are a hero! We are all curious as hell how you tapped the screws. Did you JB Weld nuts on the inside of the pan? Did you actually tap the pan for the screws? How are you gasketing this miracle? You belong on a Volkswagen Audi forum

    I love this! Reminds me of the trick to cut a hole in the firewall of first gen Taurus to get at the heater core. Saved MANY hours labour. did you drill and tap each hole? what size fasteners did you use? Sealer or gasket? Through the hole are you able to remove the pickup or just clean it in place?

    Great idea! What size were the hole saws for the plate and the pan? Was the plate aluminum?

    doing the oil pump now on my audi a4 1.8t. so far about 6 hours in and pump is out. really contemplating doing something like this

      Nick B you should. I know your comment is 6 months old. But these should come with access panels from the factory. There's no excuse. The original specification of conventional oil at 10000 mile intervals destroyed a great number of 1.8 Motors. It is imperative to use the highest quality oil you can get your hands on in this motor. Turbo temperatures exceed 1000 degrees. Look how close the pickup is to the bottom of the sump pan. This guy is a hero.

    What kind of oil are you using and what is the history of the vehicle? Wonder why you're having a repeat issue and what it is that's clogging your pickup? Again thanks for the vid

      I had the exact same issue on the same car model. Very common problem on these cars when the pickup tube sits very low in the pan, combined with the shitty long life oil service

    how did you know where to drill?

    • @ArcolaBridge
      @ArcolaBridge 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dominic Jacob the man states he had done the job before. Also, even if he had not I'm sure he would be able to see where the oil pickup lines up from pictures on the internet. This is an extremely smart idea I have thought of before.

      The first time I cleaned the screen I took the pan off. Before installing the pan I marked the location on the outside.
