Awesome story mate. I am happy you find purpose and life meaning in the guitar. The guitar has helped me pull through after the most difficult times in life and bouts with depression. Music can literally save lives. My life changed with I sae the video to under the bridge when I was 16 in the mid 90s. I went and bought my crappy, awesome, white Squire Affinity Strat that same week which I still have today along with a tab book for the BSSM album. Was one of the best things I ever did in my life. Discovering the Peppers as a teen from Greece, it opened my ears to much new music and the rest was history.

Once I learned under the bridge in middle school my mind was completely blown. The fact that a person could create a guitar part like that really made an impression on me in the best way. Life felt magical and i would be a fan for life.

I was at a lonely place when I got into John’s work in the chili peppers. I was 12 in 1999 and when californication album came out with music videos like Otherside, scar tissue, californication, I was hooked. It was the first and last cassette tape I ever bought (before cd’s). I was already a fan of BSSM, but when Californication and then By the way, I was a superfan. Love every aspect of their music. My favorite guitarist, bassist, drummer and even lyricist/singer. Very artistic and different than anything else. Musically and lyrically just resonates with me on a strange level. So good to see it did for me what it did for others. Thanks for sharing Dave
I really get you Dave I really do. I've watched every interview I can find of him, I've watched the documentaries and live performances and anything I can get my hands on really. I dont connect with any musician like I do with him. It was Slow Cheetah that made me pick up my guitar a few months ago after not playing for a few years and now here I am learning his songs everyday. I bought a squier classic vibe 60s sunburst second hand the other day. Just waiting for it to arrive. It's already had the lacquer stripped off the neck by the previous owner and I can't wait to pour my life into this guitar
I like the sentiment you expressed about how you try to be the best you can be for your viewers - so you end up inspiring other people in the same way John inspired you. Hi Dave, here is my story. One year ago i wasn’t in the right place, and my dad started showing me some of his favourite music. At that point of time i was listening to the trash music, but when i heard rhcp play scar tissue i felt something i haven’t felt ever since. I was listening to 3 songs, can’t stop, californication and scar tissue. From that point i discovered your how ti play like john frusciante series, that was the light at the end of the tunnel. I have to thank you, mr Dave Simpson for making my life better. I love that we have built-up community, and that we have healthy relationships between us. Big love from Bosnia and Herzegovina ❤

Cool story, Dave. When I was 5 years old, I watched John playing with the Red Hot Chili Peppers on TV, and 'Californication' was on MTV. At that time, I didn't know who he was, even though I listened to music, but I eventually forgot about it. At the age of 14, my world seemed very dark and cruel. The only thing that made sense and saved me from suicide was music. I listened to RHCP, AC/DC, Nirvana, QOTSA, and then I remembered John Frusciante. This was when I found out his name because I had internet access by then. It was a very dark period when I wanted to end my life, but I decided to start playing the guitar, thinking it would give meaning to my life and be the only thing that made sense. Among all the guitarists I admire, John is my favorite. He stands out because I started playing because of him. As life unfolded, it didn't get much better, but at least I had music and drugs. Unfortunately, the latter cost me a lot. At 15, I started using drugs, overdosed many times, and even faced the possibility of amputating my leg due to an infection. I often ended up unconscious, covered in blood, either in the emergency room or found by people outside. It was not pleasant. I also thought it was cool to take drugs because Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, and all my friends did it. In the meantime, I had many strange, twisted, and unusual experiences. That's when I stopped playing with my friends and drifted apart. I took large amounts of psychedelics like psilocybin and LSD, ending up in a very bad state. I started taking heavy drugs again to get back to normal, not even realizing what was happening. I was broke, sold my guitar and pedals because I couldn't play anymore, fearing I would end up on the streets as a homeless person. It almost happened. My aunt in another city took me in, and I barely finished a year at the music production academy, often skipping classes. Then I returned to my hometown and entered a rehabilitation center for drug addiction. The rehabilitation was unsuccessful as I couldn't stop, and I was there for only three weeks, struggling with severe mental issues and incorrect therapy. They sent me to a psychiatric clinic in Zagreb for addicts, where I spent three weeks lying down. I got out, and my parents and aunt paid for my apartment, but I continued using drugs because I still felt unwell. After a year, I ended up on the streets briefly. I returned home, and now, for the past five months, I've been completely clean. However, I haven't played the guitar for a long time. I didn't want these things to happen, but various events unfolded, and Fru has been a constant mental support for me to endure and fight everything, just like he did. Now, things are getting better. I'm only 29, and there's still a lot I can do. I plan to form a band with my friends and record my music, of which there is plenty. Overall, I wanted to share my story briefly. Throughout this time, I watched your videos because it's evident that you love the guitar and truly enjoy it out of pure love. Even though I never saw John as an idol but more as a friend, it was great to listen to someone talking like that when I couldn't play. I remember 2020 (I think it was 2020) when I was in terrible shape and saw your video about John receiving your CD. Cheers!"

Your willingness to be so open and honest about difficult beginnings for you really resonates and I'm sure there are folk out there right now thinking the same as me - goodness, I'm not the only one! The years might be different and the music of the time too, but there is often a common strand that bridges that and this piece enables doors to open to our own memories of our personal epiphany. It's lovely to hear about how your spark was first found and I'm also sure it's so like what happened to many of us out here, when we encountered 'our moment'. Mine was the emotion of Kossoff's playing, that so matched the way I felt, almost crying every note, through that Les Paul, his face contorted in a grimace of pain or joy, maybe both . Hi Dave, I was waiting to send you a message, and this video opened this opportunity. First, I was 60 years old and, as happens with you, but in 1978, I saw the film "The Song Remains the Same" and my life changed as well. In that time there was no magazine, no internet, no VHS, only LP and K-7 records. and so it started my quest for that Jimi Page's tone. Because I never could play like him, but I want to understand why my (crap) guitar and amp didn't distort, soon after I entered in a Electronic graduation. To make a long story short, I saw that film endless times, I bought the LP, then the VHS of the film, the first CD, the DVD, the 2o versions of CD and DVD and the Bluray. Is it unhealthy? I don't think so. Cause I realize how music (or other kinds of arts) can shape one's life and connect us with each other as human beings. To finish, in 1989 I bought the Peppers' Upmofo party plan LP and when The Mother's Milk was released, I bought the CD. At that time I read some articles on Guitar Player or guitar World (I don't remember) about that "new guitarist" (John, of course) and he told he obtained the "clean" tones was with a Boss SD-1 and the distorted tones with a Boss DS-1 or 2 (I don't remember well). So thanks for teaching to the following generations how to reach the tone of that favorite guitarist and how to play those parts. In my case I still trying to achieve that Page's 1973 Plexi and Les Paul tone. Ah, my favorite Frusciante's solo is that one in the "Power of Equality" track. That's the mark of a genius, totally out of the box, just ONE NOTE with lots of bendings and pickings. Perfect. Just perfect. Cheers

This story is nearly the same as the way I found John Frusciante, but it was the 2006 TOTP special for the SA release. That version of scar tissue was so life changing I just watched the vhs I taped over and over and over till it became unwatchable. :P Then I discovered To Record Only Water For Ten Days and the rest is history for me :)
❤ I discovered John in 1989 when I was 11 thanks to my older sisters bf who was a record collector and dj and he used to make me tapes of what he thought was cool and what I could learn in guitar as I was hungry for new stuff. John stood out to me being so young and I was always the young one in my group of friends and later in bands. It was instant. I dug mothers milk and by the time blood sugar came out I was already die hard. Me and my friend bunked off school the day blood sugar came out and I took it to debenhams to the hi fi area up stairs and blasted on the best system they had. It was a good day.
Straight up, some of the soloing you've done on this channel is otherworldly guitar god tier stuff, imo. It's awesome that you turned a bad time in guitar playing mastery. Also, keep holding it down for those of us on team solid state.

If you saw something on MTV or heard a song somewhere, it was a challenge to find out stuff. But IF you managed to find out what you wanted to know, it was SOOO precious. Like a simple magazine. When Hillel Slovak died, then came John. - no one believed he could replace Hillel and then boom Mother's Milk blew us all away. Everytime John joins he breathes new life into them. The Chillis owe him a lot!
Aw man. I know it’s like asking a parent their favourite child but which songs stood out to u on shadows collide. To me there are songs that although not the point could have topped the charts at the time.
Dave-we are your audience. Whatever you do we listen. And something like this, from your heart ❤️, is very meaningful. Some of us aspiring players have had the same experience. I saw Jimi in concert when I was a child. Also met Janis and saw her in concert. She was unbelievable. Absolutely one of a kind. Then the local AM jazz station with a dawn to dusk license that I listened to obsessively played East West by the Butterfield Blues Band. For me, that was it. Michael Bloomfield is my hero. I have tracked down every possible recording including unreleased stuff. I have every biography written about him. He backed up Dylan on July 25, 1965 at Newport. He was good. Very very good and a tragic loss but I still have his music 🎼 andI never tire of it. I’m as obsessed with him as you are with John. I still listen to Mississippi John Hurt, Howlin’ Woof, Taj Mahal etc. because I love 💕 the blues. And I finally got my Custom Shop 59 Reissue Strat because I’ll never be able to afford a vintage 59. Great video dave...i had the same thing happen to me as a 8 year old ...my dad played me whole lotta rosie ....and angus young became my hero .around the same time i found hendrix and thin lizzy ...and those 3 groups meant evey to me ... Then the next big wow moment was kurt cobain ...and also like you ..those first 3 oasis albums got me playing guitar at 12 years of age..along with tons of bands ..j mascis of dinosaur jr became a big influence..sonic youth ..pixies..i play and like anything from blues .folk ...absolutely love 70s roots reggae n dub...trippy 60s music..even .some rave ...all sorts.....but like you ill never forget that acdc moment ...that sort if thing goes deeper than just music....hard to describe .take care all

2002 was a mixed year for me as well. I was 18, got sacked from my good job as an electrician apprentice and was on drugs. I ended up getting kicked out of my parents house and made the best decision of my life. Join the army. I went to iraq and took a stagg acoustic gutar with me to learn. My life only got better. For me, very close to you, after seeing an special of RHCP in latin america (specifically a channel called Telehit) I saw so many different aspects of Jhon with red head, half-head-shaved, mohawk, long hair, full shaved, with beard I just thought why is there a different guitarrist every video... after investigating deeply I begun recognicing him... but anyways... I saw chili peppers for first time with josh klinghoffer on Guatemala (central america) and I thought it was a shame I maybe was never gonna be able to see my guitar hero after quiting and desappear like a phantom but life gave me a second chance to see them all chili peppers together in Costa Rica this comming Oct 31st 2023 and I just want you to tell u thank you, because 10 years ago never imagine you was gonna help me to catch the jhon's tone, also when I discover you I investigate you little deeper jajaja thanks for so much dave. I first heard RHCP around 89 90 liked the guitar on under the bridge had no idea who the guitarist was. I had a guitar teacher who taught me few chords but I struggled reading music and he would bully me for not practicing and tell me how much better a guy I went to school with was at guitar, I had enough and quit for years. My mum used to listen to the oldies station and I’d hear the Shadows and Hank Marvin’s lead guitar and I got interested in guitar again. I taught myself guitar again the scales and all , I still can’t read music. John’s 62 strat got stolen or destroyed I believe and Anthony bought him another one
I've always known JF on that Under the Bridge video, then when he left and came back looking different I really didnt pay attention to him, although I've loved Flea and RHCP as a whole. Then I saw Slane Castle and that was when I got drawn in to JF again.
Yes, and I remember breaking the tabs off audio cassette tapes to prevent recording over too. And tapes getting eaten by the machine. -_- Have to take my hat off to Scotch video tapes for that old advert with their lifetime guarantee. Yeah. They did well out of that one. Also remember the old Maxell tapes advert with Night on Bald Mountain in it. "Break the sound barrier" was the ad slogan.
I remember my first song on my martin d-45 copy guitar, C.G.Winner W-777, I learned was Under The Bridge. But the only guitar dat got me wasn't anything from the rhcp, it was Johnny Bucklands Fender Jaguar. This Guitar was my dream for years until I owned one😃😃 But my start was a black harley benton tele and I started learning in 2009 on my tele without an amp, a lot of the peppers stuff🙂 Pretty interesting story and welcome to the sad 16 yo club, same in my life😔

It's very interesting. Don't bother about that. I like the background things as much as the other stuff. It would be sad for John if he didn't meet you, talk and have a jam. You could inspire him as well as he did inspire you. I have to say I like the Trio music more than RHCP. The connection to your music is stronger. You mean a lot to the people who listen to your music and watch your videos.

Unfortunately, the latter cost me a lot. At 15, I started using drugs, overdosed many times, and even faced the possibility of amputating my leg due to an infection. I often ended up unconscious, covered in blood, either in the emergency room or found by people outside.
It was not pleasant. I also thought it was cool to take drugs because Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, and all my friends did it. In the meantime, I had many strange, twisted, and unusual experiences. That's when I stopped playing with my friends and drifted apart. I took large amounts of psychedelics like psilocybin and LSD, ending up in a very bad state. I started taking heavy drugs again to get back to normal, not even realizing what was happening.
I was broke, sold my guitar and pedals because I couldn't play anymore, fearing I would end up on the streets as a homeless person. It almost happened. My aunt in another city took me in, and I barely finished a year at the music production academy, often skipping classes. Then I returned to my hometown and entered a rehabilitation center for drug addiction. The rehabilitation was unsuccessful as I couldn't stop, and I was there for only three weeks, struggling with severe mental issues and incorrect therapy.
They sent me to a psychiatric clinic in Zagreb for addicts, where I spent three weeks lying down. I got out, and my parents and aunt paid for my apartment, but I continued using drugs because I still felt unwell. After a year, I ended up on the streets briefly. I returned home, and now, for the past five months, I've been completely clean. However, I haven't played the guitar for a long time. I didn't want these things to happen, but various events unfolded, and Fru has been a constant mental support for me to endure and fight everything, just like he did.
Now, things are getting better. I'm only 29, and there's still a lot I can do. I plan to form a band with my friends and record my music, of which there is plenty. Overall, I wanted to share my story briefly. Throughout this time, I watched your videos because it's evident that you love the guitar and truly enjoy it out of pure love. Even though I never saw John as an idol but more as a friend, it was great to listen to someone talking like that when I couldn't play. I remember 2020 (I think it was 2020) when I was in terrible shape and saw your video about John receiving your CD.

Your willingness to be so open and honest about difficult beginnings for you really resonates and I'm sure there are folk out there right now thinking the same as me - goodness, I'm not the only one! The years might be different and the music of the time too, but there is often a common strand that bridges that and this piece enables doors to open to our own memories of our personal epiphany. It's lovely to hear about how your spark was first found and I'm also sure it's so like what happened to many of us out here, when we encountered 'our moment'. Mine was the emotion of Kossoff's playing, that so matched the way I felt, almost crying every note, through that Les Paul, his face contorted in a grimace of pain or joy, maybe both .

I was waiting to send you a message, and this video opened this opportunity. First, I was 60 years old and, as happens with you, but in 1978, I saw the film "The Song Remains the Same" and my life changed as well. In that time there was no magazine, no internet, no VHS, only LP and K-7 records. and so it started my quest for that Jimi Page's tone. Because I never could play like him, but I want to understand why my (crap) guitar and amp didn't distort, soon after I entered in a Electronic graduation. To make a long story short, I saw that film endless times, I bought the LP, then the VHS of the film, the first CD, the DVD, the 2o versions of CD and DVD and the Bluray. Is it unhealthy? I don't think so. Cause I realize how music (or other kinds of arts) can shape one's life and connect us with each other as human beings.
To finish, in 1989 I bought the Peppers' Upmofo party plan LP and when The Mother's Milk was released, I bought the CD. At that time I read some articles on Guitar Player or guitar World (I don't remember) about that "new guitarist" (John, of course) and he told he obtained the "clean" tones was with a Boss SD-1 and the distorted tones with a Boss DS-1 or 2 (I don't remember well).
So thanks for teaching to the following generations how to reach the tone of that favorite guitarist and how to play those parts. In my case I still trying to achieve that Page's 1973 Plexi and Les Paul tone.
Ah, my favorite Frusciante's solo is that one in the "Power of Equality" track. That's the mark of a genius, totally out of the box, just ONE NOTE with lots of bendings and pickings. Perfect. Just perfect.

This story is nearly the same as the way I found John Frusciante, but it was the 2006 TOTP special for the SA release. That version of scar tissue was so life changing I just watched the vhs I taped over and over and over till it became unwatchable. :P Then I discovered To Record Only Water For Ten Days and the rest is history for me :)
❤ I discovered John in 1989 when I was 11 thanks to my older sisters bf who was a record collector and dj and he used to make me tapes of what he thought was cool and what I could learn in guitar as I was hungry for new stuff. John stood out to me being so young and I was always the young one in my group of friends and later in bands. It was instant. I dug mothers milk and by the time blood sugar came out I was already die hard. Me and my friend bunked off school the day blood sugar came out and I took it to debenhams to the hi fi area up stairs and blasted on the best system they had. It was a good day.
May you go onto even greater things.... and find happiness and enlightenment on the journey.

If you saw something on MTV or heard a song somewhere, it was a challenge to find out stuff. But IF you managed to find out what you wanted to know, it was SOOO precious. Like a simple magazine. June 9th 1990 at Manchester Apollo was my introduction to John Frusciante. Went based on the Mother's Milk and particularly Knock Me Down but was blown away by the Hendrix funk playing. Only Jeff Healey was as mesmerising as that John Frusciante gig 🙂

When Hillel Slovak died, then came John. - no one believed he could replace Hillel and then boom Mother's Milk blew us all away. Everytime John joins he breathes new life into them. The Chillis owe him a lot!
Aw man. I know it’s like asking a parent their favourite child but which songs stood out to u on shadows collide. To me there are songs that although not the point could have topped the charts at the time.
Dave-we are your audience. Whatever you do we listen. And something like this, from your heart ❤️, is very meaningful. Some of us aspiring players have had the same experience. I saw Jimi in concert when I was a child. Also met Janis and saw her in concert. She was unbelievable. Absolutely one of a kind. Then the local AM jazz station with a dawn to dusk license that I listened to obsessively played East West by the Butterfield Blues Band. For me, that was it. Michael Bloomfield is my hero. I have tracked down every possible recording including unreleased stuff. I have every biography written about him. He backed up Dylan on July 25, 1965 at Newport. He was good. Very very good and a tragic loss but I still have his music 🎼 andI never tire of it. I’m as obsessed with him as you are with John. I still listen to Mississippi John Hurt, Howlin’ Woof, Taj Mahal etc. because I love 💕 the blues. And I finally got my Custom Shop 59 Reissue Strat because I’ll never be able to afford a vintage 59. It’s ok ✅. I know how you feel about that 62 Strat ❤️. Keep on doing what you do. I find you inspiring 🤩. 👍☮️🌞🎸🎵🩵

Great video dave...i had the same thing happen to me as a 8 year old ...my dad played me whole lotta rosie ....and angus young became my hero .around the same time i found hendrix and thin lizzy ...and those 3 groups meant evey to me ... Then the next big wow moment was kurt cobain ...and also like you ..those first 3 oasis albums got me playing guitar at 12 years of age..along with tons of bands ..j mascis of dinosaur jr became a big influence..sonic youth ..pixies..i play and like anything from blues .folk ...absolutely love 70s roots reggae n dub...trippy 60s music..even .some rave ...all sorts.....but like you ill never forget that acdc moment ...that sort if thing goes deeper than just music....hard to describe .take care all

2002 was a mixed year for me as well. I was 18, got sacked from my good job as an electrician apprentice and was on drugs. I ended up getting kicked out of my parents house and made the best decision of my life. Join the army. I went to iraq and took a stagg acoustic gutar with me to learn. My life only got better. For me, very close to you, after seeing an special of RHCP in latin america (specifically a channel called Telehit) I saw so many different aspects of Jhon with red head, half-head-shaved, mohawk, long hair, full shaved, with beard I just thought why is there a different guitarrist every video... after investigating deeply I begun recognicing him... but anyways... I saw chili peppers for first time with josh klinghoffer on Guatemala (central america) and I thought it was a shame I maybe was never gonna be able to see my guitar hero after quiting and desappear like a phantom but life gave me a second chance to see them all chili peppers together in Costa Rica this comming Oct 31st 2023 and I just want you to tell u thank you, because 10 years ago never imagine you was gonna help me to catch the jhon's tone, also when I discover you I investigate you little deeper jajaja thanks for so much dave. And you're a great artist and inspiration in your own right and that deserves to be noted. Red Hot Chili Peppers fans (at least the ones I've met) always seem to be the nicest people. If someone doesn't bop their head the moment the Can't Stop riff kicks in, I generally treat them with great suspicion XD

I first heard RHCP around 89 90 liked the guitar on under the bridge had no idea who the guitarist was. I had a guitar teacher who taught me few chords but I struggled reading music and he would bully me for not practicing and tell me how much better a guy I went to school with was at guitar, I had enough and quit for years. My mum used to listen to the oldies station and I’d hear the Shadows and Hank Marvin’s lead guitar and I got interested in guitar again. I taught myself guitar again the scales and all , I still can’t read music. John’s 62 strat got stolen or destroyed I believe and Anthony bought him another one
I've always known JF on that Under the Bridge video, then when he left and came back looking different I really didnt pay attention to him, although I've loved Flea and RHCP as a whole. Then I saw Slane Castle and that was when I got drawn in to JF again.
I adore a lot of his solo stuff too but it all began when my sisters ex bought the scar tissue single and I was hooked

I remember my first song on my martin d-45 copy guitar, C.G.Winner W-777, I learned was Under The Bridge. But the only guitar dat got me wasn't anything from the rhcp, it was Johnny Bucklands Fender Jaguar. This Guitar was my dream for years until I owned one😃😃
But my start was a black harley benton tele and I started learning in 2009 on my tele without an amp, a lot of the peppers stuff🙂
