Seems like fans & critics had a lot of expectations about what the album should sound like. Some wanted the guitar-hero style of SA, others the radio friendliness of Californication/By the Way. As for myself, I love that they’re always trying something different and unexpected. On this album I hear 4 musicians at the top of their game, playing as a unit. They leave each other space while pulling tricks from every era of the band (even from the mid-80’s Freaky Styley era). It does grow on you and I encourage you Dave to keep listening to it.
Also, I doubt that John was playing it safe or that he wasn’t there yet in terms of technique. At first listen it seemed obvious that these songs were designed to be fun to play live and as such, giving yourself room to breathe and improvise seemed like the thing to do. I also think that the wear of long-ass touring and the very performative aspect of his playing/singing got the best of him during the SA years. Same could be said about John’s backing vocals on the album, efficiency over technical proficiency (oh, and let’s acknowledge the fact that John is singing lead on the chorus of a song-The Heavy Wing- for the first time since 1989’s Knock Me Down, amazing!).
I find on this album the essence of the band I love which is the positive groove, generated by the so elusive 'brother-blood-comrades-partner-family-cuzz' chemistry. I would go as far as saying that people that like the pre-Mother’s Milk era of the band will recognize mellow funk grooves that haven’t been heard since. The guitar reflect this as well, probably the closest to Hillel’s early influence I heard from John on a record. It seems to be directly influenced by the process of starting from scratch, playing blues covers and early Peppers songs (from the Freaky Styley/Uplift Mofo era). She’s a Lover/Let ‘em Cry are the long lost siblings of If You Want Me to Stay in my opinion.
Tangelo. I like it, don't know why. Tony Flow's 5 pages long Poster Child lyrics, classic! Full of 70's/80's references. These Are the Ways, drop D rocks! (adding that one to my busking setlist)
Keep listening good people of TH-cam, the groove will get to you.
And to you Dave, Love (Unlimited) XD cheers mate!

He did kinda play lead vocals on the chorus of Dosed more recently (if you consider Anthony’s part more of a response). That said I do know what you mean (knock me down is really a full out John song) and I also agree that it’s a precious moment on the heavy wing.

Excellent take on UL!!! It has been an acquired taste for me, but now I can't get enough of it! It's a work of art for sure. I would love the band to do more songs with equal vocals like Heavy Wing, or even have John do songs on his own. Bands like SOAD were very successful having two vocalists (Although Anthony is strictly a singer/front man, unlike Serj and Daron, who are both musicians as well).

I felt the same a week ago, but I've been listening to the album nonstop with headphones and it's grown so much on me. To be honest I was kind of let down by John's playing but I was so stuck in the past wanting him to rip out a solo like in the Stadium Arcadium tour but then I realized I had set my expectations wrong, I mean, why would he have come back to play like he did 22 years ago? That's so not John. My favorite is It's only Natural. I still think though that this is Flea's record. He's really on another level in this record.

Love the analogy about there being pressure on John, people will always compare his latest guitar work to fan favourites like BSSM or SA. I like that this album at times feels familiar but also so new and something that as fans with this lineup we’re not yet used to hearing! The album has grown on me a huge amount and respect to you for not reviewing it after one back to back listen Dave, it’s good to see them back together and in terms of interviews and press John and the guys seem happier than ever! Credit to them for always making the music that they want to make and not what people want to hear.

For me it really came to life after a few start-beginning sessions. I needed 4 times and a few days in order to really appreciate it. I found the album grew on me. I found myself listening to it every day this past week. John pulled out some new subtle guitar tricks like swells on Not The One and Its only Natural. Another he did Hawaiian style slide guitar. It's not catchy on first listen but there's nuances in there that people will appreciate over time.

I think this album is great. The band is super tight and they were certainly not afraid to experiment and explore many different flavors and moods, sometimes in the same song. At the same time, they also deliver many songs that feels like classic Chili Peppers with new clothes. Despite the differences in style and mood, one song leads to the next coherently and they all sound like RHCP. I honestly don't get why some people are saying that the songs are too similar, though. There's so much variety and all the songs are completely different from one another, as I see it.
They are taking a new approach and changing things like they consistently did from album to album since the beginning. A new RHCP album is never going to please all the fans because it's going to intentionally have a new sound. For example, I remember many people in the forums back in the day who were expecting something like BSSM when they released Californication, because John was back. Many of them hated it and said that they were selling out, that John couldn't play anymore, that the solos were shit, the music was too comercial etc. We all know now it became a classic. They always change on purpose, especially John, so some fans are naturally going to be disappointed with the new direction.
Anthony Kiedis always wrote silly lyrics and sang in a playful way from time to time since the beginning. I think he's more concerned with the way his lyrics and delivery sound over the instruments than what they mean necessarily. He's like a surrealist artist painting over these sonic structures, unconcerned if anyone will get it. The lyrics probably mean something to him or to the people who were involved in a certain situation with him, but I feel like what he's doing a lot of the time is similar to what John Lennon did in I Am The Walrus. I always loved the way AK does it, so I still do. He is sounding as good as he ever did on this record and he's bringing a lot to the table with many memorable hooks, melodies and even some experimentation (as in Bastards of Light).
Flea is shining as everybody seems to notice and Chad is also killing it, always playing exactly what the song needs, but also displaying his technical skills in some songs like he did few times before and maybe never on an studio album. The production is on point, the mix and master sound great (which was not always the case with them) and the selection of tone for bass and guitar for each section of each song is very tasteful. All and all, Unlimited Love sits comfortably next to the band's most legendary albums, which is quite the accomplishment after almost 40 years on the road.

    Nice intro playing :)
John was definitely trying to let the others shine but also the type of music they were going for lent itself to that type of playing in my opinion and it sounded great. It was awesome to hear fleas incredible bass playing at the forefront. Of course I would have loved some more guitar centered songs but overall I'm quite satisfied with what we got. My favorites at the moment are It's Only Natural and White Braids & Pillow Chair. The Heavy Wing was a very special moment with John's singing surprising us. To be honest when I first listened to Stadium Arcadium most of the record "Didn't get me" for quite a few listens. And it's a similar experience for me this time. The songs are slowly getting to a point where I love them deeply and they get me feeling the way I felt from their other work with John. I feel like that's how the human brain works when it comes to music in general; when it listens to new unfamiliar territory it's not going to be able to fully process it, thus not enjoy it to its full potential. And that's why I don't like people rushing out to make a review and act as if music isn't something that grows on us and takes time to connect or for someone to be ready to hear. That's why I appreciate you taking your time before putting this video out :).
    ps.

My favourite band is Led Zeppelin, and my expectation was that UL would be similar to Led Zep's final album, In Through The Out Door. ITTOD is an album made by a legendary band of master musicians who at that point had done it all. The climbed the Stairway to Heaven, they explored the depths of blues, folk, and psychedelic rock. They spent 10 years touring and being mega stars. ITTOD is music written by more mature artists who are interested in experimenting and challenging ideas of what Led Zep is. For me, UL is the same. Flea, Chad, John and Anthony are obviously the best they've ever been. Their catalog with John has crossed vast musical vistas. So what's left? I think just pure passion and love, and simply chasing anything exciting. And that requires little ego and getting out of ideas about what the band is. I love UL so much. Aquatic Mouth Dance is a top 5 Flea bass line for me and Anthony's vocal melody on that track is evidence of how much he's grown. I doubt BSSM era Anthony finds that melody. I really hope they ease up on touring to keep stresses low and just keep writing music. So happy to have them back.

Boom. I agree that they seem more cohesive. They serve the song and one another instead of flea being in the background throwing riffs down you have to pick apart, they are in your face. BUT! In the same way, frusciantes lead licks are in your face when they need to be but in the background when they need to be. The chemistry and relationship musically they have lends to this idea of communication through instrumental phrasing that seem to support one another unselfishly.

I think this album is a really good way of telling Chili Peppers fans from John fans (I consider myself to be both). John's vision dominated BTW and he really let it all hang out for Stadium Arcadium, so I think a lot of John fans were expecting him to rule this album - and the ten year absence made many of us yearn for that even more. What we got was in my opinion a much more balanced effort, in that sense a bit like BSSM and the first albums, and personally - even though John is my favourite guitarist ever - I like that everyone shines pretty much equally here, feels like a "band album". John still delivers plenty of tasty melodies, solos and vocals, Chad and Flea are as great as ever and in my opinion AK really shines.

i agree with 90% of this comment, only the part with AK i cannot agree. i have listened to the album a lot of times now and it really grew on me, what surprises me tho is that AKs vocals do not grow on me as the instrumental does. it might be personal preference but i feel that AKs songwriting has declined somehow.
i did not really love the josh era, as john was, is and will always be my favourite musician, with RHCP and his solo stuff, but i feel like AK somehow put a lot of effort into writing vocals for the last two albums and this time it is like he just relies on the others. that is my opinion tho and you might feel different which is totally fine

Glad to finally hear your opinion on this! Personally I think it's actually a pretty good album you're 100% right that Flea is the star on the record. I actually find on the vinyl the record flies by and doesn't seem that long. The big gripe people seem to have is Anthony's lyrics but I mean that's the chili peppers when have they ever been top tier. Regarding John this is just my opinion but from interviews it seems like he did all of this for fun and maybe with covid he didn't ever think these were even going to released. We're all guitarists here and we want the big John solos but I mean John is a musician and an artist and he goes for records and sounds versus ego. The part of this that I was super curious about was when you talked about his live performance imo he seemed so subdued.

I am really not sure there is any pressure on a man who has made 20 albums and sings Tiny Dancer between songs in arenas. I think he'll be fine being a rockstar. He's VERY relaxed in his playing, using a moderately simple pedal board into a JCM 800. He is doing just fine.

I absolutely loved the album on first listen. With a couple being only OK for me. I've cooled a bit on parts of it. Mainly the chorus of She's A Lover. It's too cheesy for me. On a whole though, I really love it. Funnily enough, it's probably for the reason you're a bit flat with it. I enjoy that it' doesn't necessarily have big standout choruses and grab you moments. In a sense, the details of the songs are the highlights. Which I dig. And you can really hear the influence of all the music that's made them who they are. Whereas other albums have been more focused on particular elements of their influences.

I nearly needed 10 straight years to love „Hey“ from SA. At the beginning I actually hated it. Now it’s on of my favorite tracks. After listening about 10 - 12 times to unlimited love I have to say that there are a lot of tracks that getting better as more as you listening. I would say that the great apes is my favorite so far!!! I understand what you say but I am really happy with the Album. And I feel I am diving just the surface so far and I love the feeling of sinking in slowly without seeing the bottom till now. But I have to admit that I listen to the album as one long track… no skipping.
Edit: the baseline of its only natural is awesome. If you listen to Rick Rubins Broke Record Podcast you hear that it’s actually Johns basic idea cause he played the base while flea was at the piano! Awesome!

Just back from the shop with a copy of Total Guitar featuring John, and now Dave's review.... Here's to a great evening. And as others have said, this is the video we've been waiting on. Thanks Dave!!!
    Hahaha, I see you've your copy too👍
Great take on the album Dave. In terms of my own opinion on 'Unlimited Love', I find I'm listening to more of the laid back tracks from the album such as 'Tangelo', 'It's Only Natural', and 'Not The One'... To me those tracks are up there with songs like 'Road Trippin', 'Porcelain' and 'Desecration Smile'.
I feel the more uptempo ones, which are not bad, haven't had the same immediate effect on me as 'Scar Tissue', 'Don't Forget Me', and, 'Snow' did when I heard them first time round.
Taken together, I think 'Unlimited Love' is a good album, but it seems like the Chili's are preparing us for the final hoorah....which I feel will be next album.

I had read somewhere that Flea had become uninspired and part of the idea of getting John back was to see if that would reinvigorate him. Well, mission accomplished. I had the same “meh” thoughts when I first ran through the tracks, but on each new listen it grows on me more. I don’t think it breaks any new ground in music, or even for the RHCP. But having said that I really enjoy the record and anticipate I’ll appreciate it more and more as I continue to experience it.

Maybe the reason I love this album soo much is because while everyone loves BSSM cause of the aggressive guitar tones, my favorite has always been the “Californication” because of that minimalism ….Like there’s no overdubs or thick guitar layers…Everything simple….I prefer that than the high flying Hendrixy vives off “Stadium Arcadium” ..

Whatchu Thinkin' is my favourite song on the new album, guitar work in chorus is pure class.
Aquatic Mouth Dance is 2nd with cool bass line and crazy horn section.
It's Only Natural is ok too, guitar melody after 1st chorus and in the end reminds me of Baby Jane by Rod Stewart :)
Most of the songs are unfortunately boring, they sound like SA b-sides. They have some good moments, but it's not enough.
Dark Necessities remains the best RHCP single in the last 15 years.
Hopefully we won't have to wait for the next album another 4-5 years, they should release it next year if the songs are ready.
I'm surprised Californication is your favourite RHCP album, Dave. In my opinion nothing is even close to BSSM, and Mother's Milk and Californication are in top 3.

Super exciting having Frusciante back and, I honestly think he's playing as good if not better than ever. Also. Great analysis Dave. I felt pretty much exactly the same. Even after multiple listenings of the whole record, there are VERY few songs that got stuck in my head. Still just looking at the track list and the names of the songs, there are only like 3-4 songs that I even remember how they went. I think the album would've been better with like max 10 songs, a lot of the songs feel just like fillers. In all honesty I wasn't too excited about the whole album to begin with. What I REALLY was waiting for was seeing the live performances, which so far have been absolutely insane. Just really waiting for a few high quality soundboard recordings from some of the festival gigs they have coming up next summer.

Hey Dave, cheers from Orange County, CA. I appreciate your thoughtfulness on the album. Unlimited Love, like other RHCP albums for me, was an acquired taste, but now that it's been a month in, I can't get enough of it! On satellite radio's RHCP channel , Chad, John, Flea, and Anthony toss out little tidbits about each song, and their inside stories makes the entire album so much more appreciative. This album really is one of the best they've put out. But I will admit, it isn't necessarily a universal attention-grabber unless you are an RHCP fan (fanatic!).

We are seeing a more mature RHCP. They serve the song and one another instead of flea being in the background throwing riffs down you have to pick apart and John soloing after every verse. BUT! In the same way, both bass and guitar's licks are in your face when they need to be but in the background when they need to be. The chemistry and relationship musically they have lends to this idea of communication through instrumental phrasing that seem to support one another unselfishly. It's like...Unlimited Love

The reason this album worked so well for me is I think partially that over the years after thousands of play throughs of Can’t Stop, Dani, Otherside in the past couple of decades, the songs I gravitate far more toward from their catalog are the so-called-fillers and B-sides from the previous John eras. Which I believe John himself once said were his favorite more often than not.
While you’re not going to find the pop-hits that sealed their 00’s “trilogy” as the music they’ll be remembered for forever, I think every song on this album stands it’s own against anything they’ve done in the past and what’s more; these were, to me, far more interesting compositions than any of the aforementioned hits. I’ll certainly be playing them far more in comparison in years to come. If I had to pick old songs that would’ve best “predicted” the direction they took on UL they would be the following:
    This is the Place
    Fortune Faded
    Throw Away Your Television
    Suck My Kiss
    Search and Destroy (cover)
    If You Have to Ask
    Funny Face
    I’ll be your Domino
    Savior
    Show Me Your Soul
    If
    Parallel Universe
    Warm Tape
