    *AHHHHHH*.......
"At will employment", "contract employment", "union 'shop' employment", and the often confounding mixture of those in The USA.
Then there are the different regions and work ethics, different state laws and union bylaws, and a vast array of cultures - types and kinds-of, personal, etc.
Employment life before vs after employer-hopping became rampant AND acceptable (computer-tech in the 90's and/or 00's). At least that's my recollection in the midwest.
👍🏼Gordon ya for explaining it briefly👍🏼
I imagine much has been written and studied about it all and will continue to be.

Finally someone answered my question. I have been watching videos some mariners put out and it seems like they work their contract say for 3-4 months and then they take "vacation" for several months. I thought that if you were a good worker the ship company would want to keep you and renew the contract since they would already know you are a good worker. But everybody in these videos jump from ship to ship with months in between contracts. I was starting to think that maybe it is really hard to get a contract on a ship. It just did not seem like a stable job to me.

Quick question, i hare the phrase “pay off the ship” or “pay someone off” what does that mean? Do you get paid to leave the ship after four months?

Great question. It means that a crew member has completed their contract or term of service on a particular ship and has received all due payment for their work. It's essentially the process of settling all financial obligations and officially ending the crew member's employment for that stint on the ship.

What makes a good worker? Specifically? Being speedy at tasks/attentive on watches? Is there a video you can link me to?

I think it depends on the job at task. Knowledge and experience for deck work, as the more experienced.... the faster you can get it done safely. Experience and attention to detail always matter. No specific video I can remember at this time.
