Thank you Sandra , taking the leap this week. Hopefully change the outcome of my life before the year ends.
For your first job as an intern, were you asked a lot of technical questions during the interview? Or were the questions more general, like "tell me about yourself" and "Why do you want to work for this company?"
Isn't simplilearn a scam company from India?
Did you have account on LinkedIn??!! All thanks
What schools do you recommend?
I work as a DoD contractor (Navy) as a cyber security analyst (non-technical) with a Sec+ and TS clearance earning $120k. I'll be on my 5th year working remotely 80-90% of the time depending on the workload and scheduled meetings I have with clients and other stakeholders. What helps is that I set my own schedule along with having reliable team members and leadership on both the client and contractor side of things along with a pretty good work/life balance. It helps that the work that I do is a rewarding and learning experience which I'm passionate about and end up not using PTO and in turn maxing out my cap which is 5 weeks so I have to take time off every pay period in order for me to keep accruing. All in all, I'm very lucky to end up with this job and although I would like to earn more, I really value work/life balance as I do have a family of my own to take care of. Hoping that everyone looking into this field will find their happy place.
Hey, do you have a degree? Or certificates only?
I have the same, switching from aviation Any advice?
@@Adaugoable No degree, just a Sec+ with previous IT helpdesk experience.
@@Traw29 Just get that Sec+ to get your foot in the door. Previous IT experience is a plus.
Where are you at?
I found job hopping worked for me. I have less than 5 years experience and went from being a specialist then analyst then engineer and now on the verge of moving into management and hiring an analyst that will eventually report to me. Work remotely making 130k now as an engineer. Everyone’s path is different but that’s what’s worked for me. Don’t have a certification beyond security + aside from some vendor specific certs like PCNA.
Hey. Is that all you had before you got into c.s was your sec +? What about any degrees ?
Do you have a college degree?
I’m hoping after I get the security + I can get in I will be studying for it soon. I just completed my masters in cybersecurity.Any advice?
?? How sway?
I'm a stay at home mom and wife, with a goal of having a remote job in cybersecurity, so I can still be home with my kids. I'm currently on my last module for the Google IT Proffesional Certificate, while also on the 6/8 module for Google Cybersecurty Proggessional Certificate. Then I'll get my security plus certificate. I have no college degree, just some customer service based job experience.

This is refreshing to hear. I have a BS in Information Systems. Took networking classes in college. However, fast forward I should of got the network+ cert 10 yrs ago. Currently going thru Network+ course material.
Im pushing up in age and am trying to go thru a career change.
Remote work is the goal, however, how difficult is it to get a first job remote from anywhere? Most remote jobs require stateside residence and I reside abroad.
Hey Sandra, Love your content. Quick Question. Do you ever do any Q&A Opportunities for the general public? (paid or unpaid). Maybe review college program descriptions (ie, Reviewing the courses that are offered at certain colleges) i feel like many people (even myself) are kind of confused as there are so many different offerings for Cybersecurity/Tech in general.
Thank you Sandra for your sound advice!!!

Hi Sandra, what do you think of getting an IT job first to get experience and transferring to cybersecurity, since a lot of ppl say there aren’t a lot of entry level cyber security jobs? Or would it be better to just try and get a entry level cyber security job?
Learning IT fundamentals & networking is essential before learning cybersecurity. In-dept understanding of networking protocol like 3-way handshake, the OSI model, how data transited and protected is a MUST.
Very informative video 😊
I really appreciate the video! Great information! A bit of constructive criticism: I had to turn on the captions because your speech tailed off a great deal and was difficult to understand at times. Great info! Thanks again 😊
I have a CySA+ which is the next level up from a Sec+ and it has been 9 months since I passed. And still cannot land a job. The DoD considers the cert an IAT II level.
Thank you for this information and video!
Are you applying for entry level jobs? It's definitely a highly competitive job market right now, try builtin.com I've used this site a few times to apply for jobs, good luck, keep applying and dont give up!
Thank you Sandra! Truly motivating when I want to be lazy!
Hi all! I'm very interested in starting in the IT world and perhaps even going the Cybersecurity route. I'm curious if landing a job in Canada requires a college diploma or if companies would be fine with an applicant who has completed a few certifications such as COMPTIA & perhaps Google's certs as well for IT>
I am thinking about going for the google certificate and then go for the other certificates. i am going into it with no experience or a degree. do you have any suggestions for me? thanks
I am at a point in my life where I need to pivot in order to make a living. I am looking to get into tech and I've ding research on online certification programs. Is it a must to have a degree within the tech industry in order to land a job in cyber secuirty?

I love your videos on the content and the role of what you do. I know you have to be sponsored and paid for these videos but it's kind of confusing when you sponsor several different places to get your knowledge for certain certifications. Sandra how I could get a job and prepare myself to be a cybersecurity analyst being spanish? Maybe english is a kind of barrier for me but I feel that I have the knowledge to achieve it. Do you think that I need to get certs to be more prepared or I should apply for a jobs out of Spain? Most of the jobs in Spain are bad paid and I would like to "think out of the box" and work for enterprises out of here. I'd thank any kind of help
I legit have Sec+, CEH, Splunk Core User and can't land a job.....its like a bad fishing trip lol
Security + isnt enough. Even the entry jobs dont have it listed. Entry level jobs right now are asking for minum bachelors degree 2 years exp as well as other certifications like cissp. Just type in "security analyst" in any job search security + is not listed. Just being honest to people security + isnt enough to get you entry level right now
Overall true. There are some exceptions. If you live near certain military bases, try the contractors... That's how I got in. I do also have my Pentest+, and now CASP+, but I didn't when I got started

Let’s be realistic, it’s really who you know not what you know, when it comes to getting high paying or government jobs now a days.
Yep
Yes, who you know is most important. And you need favoritism.
I'd say that applies to every industry nowadays. I've worked in numerous fields and even being self employed right now, I even see favoritism and whatnot within an industry full of self employed people. Knowing what to do helps, but mainly it's WHO you know for sure. It's sad, and I am done playing nice guy, which is why I'm gonna play dirty too and get help from an in law who's been in Cybersecurity in order to get my foot in the door once I learn enough and get my Certs.
Hello! I am a Frontend Dev with +5 years of experience. I've taken a year off to build an Agency. Maybe you don't communicate properly
Would you recommend looking for cybersecurity jobs on indeed or other job platforms?
In your opinion is a very detailed knowledge of networks necessary for a cybersecurity job? In other words networking knowledge up to the CCNA level or JUNCIA level 1 certification?
Some youtubers are saying not at this point in time.??
They are wrong/have no idea what they are talking about. A knowledge of how data is transferred over a network, and how and where the data is encapsulated/unencapsulated as it travels up/down the OSI protocol stack is a fundamental concept that you must comprehend for you to you understand how data is used and designated for specific purposes, for application use, and its delivery methods and recovery protocols. Without an understanding of the TCP/IP protocols you will fail. Without knowing the difference between UDP and TCP you will fail. Plainly, if you don't know what an ICMP echo message is, then you need to either take your CCNA or your Network+. Then all the rest of what you are trying to learn will mean so much more to you. The context will make your knowledge fit into the important concepts that you are trying to comprehend, and thus apply to your work environment.

Just obtained my A+ and my Net+. I'm currently an IT technician and already have a year of experience. I'm starting to study for my Sec+. I don't have a degree in computer science or anything IT related, just a bachelors in multidisciplinary studies. I'm sure there's plenty I need to learn in terms of cybersecurity, but will my experience as an IT technician give me a leg up when applying to cybersecurity? I rarely dabble in cybersecurity at work.
If you have network experience, that’s already a huge leg up if you pivot by going into a network security role, even cloud security if you get a few beginner azure or aws certs, there’re lots of ways you can go from here. Start with the Sec+ and take the Google Cyber cert for the foundational knowledge - imp.i384100.net/k0R0rz and get technical projects onto your resume, I made a video on beginner projects to work on here: Cyber Security Projects for Beginners

Do I need a degree? I already have my cert. I got it last year
What’s the best jobs to apply for with a CompTIA security+ certificate?
None. Ultimately, it will tie down to HR deciding whether having a certification is important or not. Some companies hire or do not hire and it is based on a whims of a person making the decision to hire.
Can you provide some platforms where we can apply for work from home(globally)
What do you think about the coursera courses certification?
I think they're pretty holistic for beginners who're just starting out! I have a review on the Google Cyber cert here: th-cam.com/video/CkkGGkr8_Wk/w-d-xo.html
Hope this helps!
Hi Sandra I already have my CompTIA and Cisco certification but I am finding it hard to actually get my desired job (Cyber Security) as I don't have the hands on experience only certification and that was in 2016, is there anything you can recommend for me personally?
Also I was a mature student - do you also think 🤔 my age will go against me?
Can you suggest some platforms offering overseas remote jobs in cyber security ?
could you do a video talking about wgu ?
I've been a Network Engineer for 5 years now and starting the Cybersecurity/Engineering BS program. Firstly, they won't enroll you unless you have some experience or a certificate or two, look through the certificates they recommend and look for an "easier" one to get. Now, you should consider how easy or hard it is for you to focus and learn before enrolling. I have ADHD and when I hit a wall my brain turns off, it is really hard for me to focus on learning from a book, or memorizing terms, it's easier for me with hands-on experience.
I am taking the Comptia route, compared to the Cisco route, I find the Comptia courses have a lot of interactive practice based questions, along with knowledge sources my Instructor will gives me. But, you have to keep in mind, for most people, taking these certification exams usually take months of prep. At WGU, each certification course is 4 units, and you have to complete 12 units each semester (6 months). So, if you think you can prepare for and pass highly technical exams every two months, I'd say go for it! But, if you think it would be too much, the courses for these exams aren't cheap, but not as expensive, and stressful, as a semester at WGU. Start with Comptia A+ Core 1, see how well you can do within a certain amount of time and go from there!
Do you think it pays off to chase the last days of S+ 601 and pay for it, and then obtain S+ 701 as well as an advantage, or just directly to go S+ 701??
Thank to all that respond!
Is there a way to see what cybersecurity certification to study for before committing to an actual program. I have no experience in IT. Idk even know if I like I.T. lol. But I am a school teacher in my 40s and I want to work remotely from home, and earn enough money as I am a single mom now. Idk what else to do 😮💨
I’d start with the Google Cybersecurity or IT Certs on Coursera! They have a 7-day free trial so if you try it for a week and don’t like it, you don’t have to drop $$ on it. They’re both great intro level certs for IT or cybersecurity depending on which one you prefer. imp.i384100.net/k0R0rz
If you decide to do it, it’s paid by monthly subscription so the schedule is pretty flexible. Hope this helps and best of luck with everything!
@WithSandra Yes very helpful. Thank you 😊
Would you recommend taking notes while reading the Security+ textbook or just start by reading it all the way through only?
It would be suuuper beneficial if you actually worked on home lab projects that related directly to the Sec+ objectives. Adding that experience to a resume can be invaluable!
@@MrAehri what kind of labs line up with the sec+ objectives?
I would recommend to download the exam objectives first and go over that. Professor Messor has study notes covering this. The exam primarily uses acronyms in the questions so it's better to know the definitions. The pbq's I've experienced mostly focus on firewall configuration ports and ACL's.
I thought the video was on 2x speed 😅😅😅😅😅😅😅

I am from India, and I have 2.8 years of exp, is it possible to get remote jobs from other Countries.
No. At the moment, US is not outsourcing and prefers to hire people from US, not Indians as Indians proved to be scammers and people who were abusing their privileges to scam people on the side.
I don’t recommend Cybersecurity if you get bored easily lol 😂 I first recommend looking into those SOC Analysts roles and see if you are ok starting out there! Otherwise you will hate yourself 😅 Good luck !
I got Net+ and Sec+ 1 experience in IT Support. Currently working as Information Security Analyst, I’ve been here for 4 months. I make around 54K/yr.
I plan on taking CySA+ and move to another company that will pay me at least 80-85K when I hit 1 year mark here. Am I being realistic?
Then I will wait one more year and I’ll want to take the BTL1 and move to another company that will pay me at least 100-110K.
That’s a little ambitious, personally I’d stay 2-3 years just because of how hard the job market is right now. Jobs usually want more than a year of experience. It will also depend on how competent you are as well because you’ll have to be able to beat out other candidates with similar resumes. It’s not impossible but with only one year of experience it’ll be challenging. You’ll need to beef of ur resume outside of ur work experience. Best of luck, wishing you all the best!
It’s good to plan but don’t get discouraged if you aren’t able to get 6 figures in two years, that is far from normal.
@@Nehemiahlc good to know. I’m currently half way on my training for the BTL1. I decided to skip CySA+. I tried but I’m done with multiple choice in my life. 😂
@@FaLkraydz that BLT1 will be way more practical anyway lol you actually get to do the work involved in Security Analysts roles lol
@@Nehemiahlc yeah I’ve looked into the market and they normally ask 2 to 3 years. At least. Hopefully my personal projects and non-traditional experiences paired with me 1 year experience will help. 😅
I’m also planning on taking the splunk cert to boost my resume and actually know better. Just wondering what’s gonna happen to splunk certs after Cisco bought splunk.

Can you share your resume that landed you the job?
I reviewed it here! th-cam.com/video/l_CEntcedwo/w-d-xo.html It's from last year but I haven't changed much besides one new job experience, I plan on creating a new resume video soon, hope this helps!
I'm gonna be putting all my bets on this CyberSec industry so i can soon quit the job after working for a while and retire early
Best of luck. It’s not gonna be a simple, it will take hard work and dedication. A lot of ppl hear cyber security now and think it’ll be easy but it’s actually really hard to get into this field. It’s not entry level and most companies want a degree + a few years of work experience. Ask around and do your research! You got this
Could you perhaps create a video about getting a remote job in the US for people from Europe?
+1
I’ve been applying for jobs and they all rejected me because I don’t have prior experience 😢
Prior IT experience or prior job experience? If it's the former, sit down with your resume and a few job listings, then work out terms and descriptions that match. For instance, if your most recent job was at McDonald's prepping food and the new job description says, "Candidate will need to resolve tickets in a high paced environment with accuracy and efficiency," well, there you go, you can do that! Instead of putting down "Food Prepper" as your title, go with something like, "Part-time/Day/Night Support." And last, but very not least, have a non-specific answer when they question your time at McDonald's, then follow up your answer with a question pertaining to the job you are interviewing for.
Ex. Interviewer: "Tell me about your time at McDonald's." You: "For 18 months I was part of a team of a tight group of individuals as Day Support which handled daily ticketing and escalation. I read on the job description that your team uses [Insert ticketing software tool], does the team use that strictly for ticket management?"
Asking them questions throughout the interview gets them talking more about them than focusing on you. They'll get an idea about you that you can ask the right questions and might be a good fit for the company, even if you don't have very much experience. Even if you don't get a job offer, you can carry that information onto the next and work on what you want to say and ask the next interviewer. You'll be learning new terms and new tools each company uses, do your research on those terms and tools, get comfortable talking about them even if you haven't used them before.
Ask about their onboarding and documentation process, what will be expected of you in the first month - first three months - first year, find out if you will have all the support and reference documentation to be able to learn about the environment you'll be working in. Every team has a process and won't expect you to know everything about everything your first day or few months into the position.
2:46. You have a degree in IT plus you have Sec+ cert. I hardly call that No Experience.
The final boss after all sixteen certifications have been passed: at 2:30
Salary is only relevant to where you live. Saying you make 6 figures means nothing to me if the cost of living is equivalently higher. Refer to positions based on benefits and future prospects more. I say this because making 6 figures and living in like NY or CA, is not a lot considered if you made the same living in LA or AZ. Or even TX. Just saying.
That's why she's talking about remotes jobs. That's the whole point. You can live anywhere...

But not sure where to start...thanks
I would recommend starting with the CompTIA A+ certification.
This will give you a basic understanding of computers.
Then, Network+, which furthers your knowledge into networking, which is basically what the Internet works off of.
Finally, Security+, which Sandra mentions here, to learn a bit of the security aspect of networks, computers, and all around safety.
Can we debunk the pay gap myth now? I am in cyber security and I only get 85k

No experience yea, but doesnt she have a computer science degree?
My degree is a Bachelors in Information Science and Technology (IST)!
Ah ha...so you had 2 yrs of experience before getting your certification. two years of experience regardless was likely a huge reason why you were hired.
And a degree...
this video peeves me,
I have 6 years in I.T, 3 GIAC certs, OSCP and I cant even get an L1 SOC job at 65k a year lol
@@Od_13 omg wtf…it seems like you’d be an obvious hire. I make that as an educator. How long have you been trying?
Hi
How are you my name is Lung
I want to let you know that iam from new york city
iwant toknow are you from new york city ?
I don't believe her at all.
Can you talk even faster please?
Usually people tell me to talk slower 😆 but you can try 1.25x speed, that should help!
"with no experience"....
as they always say.
Really bro?
Why you always speak so fast? 😮
I typically recommend setting a slower (.75x speed) or custom speed setting if it's still too fast, I already set it to .85x speed when I edit but it's probably because I usually watch videos in 2x
@@WithSandra I typically have to speed up everyone's videos, yours was perfect and I didn't have to!
@@WithSandrayou sound just fine to me.
I have 26+ years of customer service/level 1 technical support and software support experience looking to get into Cyber Security. Would the Google Cybersecurity Certification be a good one to get or is there another that would be better to get an entry level job in Cybersec.
