    Not often you see an FXE as clean and stock as this one. This is a piece of history.

    Something's wrong here. My '75 FX, at idle, would be vibrating so violently that the front wheel would practically be jumping up and down. I had an oil pump failure at about 2,600 miles and lots of battery wire fractures, the latter due I'm sure to the vibration. I put a 40mm Mukini on it that dramatically improved starting, running and even gas mileage. It was a beast to be sure, but I loved that darn thing in a way like no other bike I have owned since.

    AMF. I had a 79 AMF Shovelhead. Best bike I owned. And I've owned several Harleys. All the rest of my bikes were American made Harley's. NONE of them as good as my AMF Japanese Harley!! No oil leaks. No problems in the 8 years I owned her. Only took off the Makuni carb for an SandS Super B. Always had to b re-jetted in the middle of the season. Only problem oh and had to change clutch plates once.. wish I had that now instead of my DYNA. Shovelhead also best sounding bike!!

    Just an amazing machine. My first HD was a new 1982 FXE I got right after the buyback from AMF. I'd previously owned Hondas, a 75 CB 360T, 73 500 4, and a 76 750 4. The Super Glide was an absolute tank compared to those bike, rock solid, powerful, and reliable. All my Hondas had stranded me at one time or another, but the Harley was a mellow, unstoppable locomotive. I got married on it, we rode from Little Rock to NYC and back, and put 80,000 miles on it in three years. I just changed plugs and fluids. Automotive style, hydraulic lifters meant no futzing around with valve adjustments. Best thing to do with any Harley is ride it. It was my sole means of transport. If you let them sit or neglect them, you'll get trouble.

      Cool story. I like that the old Harleys were known to be reliable by people that rode them in the heyday. Stories now are all negative. In my humble opinion, AMF Harleys are beutiful. The new ones look terrible in my opinion. The lowrider was so cool for years, then they made it all short and fat, losing the laid back 70s look.

    Those pipes are California only, all other states had staggered dualies. Keihin carb and Jap forks. The front caliper bolts (2 ea.) were recalled, replaced free by the dealer.

    Those controls are sooo terrible... No wonder everybody and there grandma rips these things apart and turns them into choppers. I mean if thats your thing holding on to nostalgia with a ninja grip good on you I guess do your thing there boss but to me garbage is garbage I would clean up that whole bike I would rip that thing to pieces and re do it in a rabbit heart beat! The carbs were garbage on those bikes too....

      I have owned a 76 Shovel for 40 years and have had several carbs on it. The 76 is the first and best year of the Kehin carb and with a few easy mods it is an outstanding carb for a stock engine.

    I never knew of Japanese Harleys. I had a 1978 sportster I put 35 thousand or more miles on it never broke down. Tougher than nails

    • @nonyabiz9487
      @nonyabiz9487 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Probably just really quiet exhaust... Everybody and there Me Maw and Paw Paw gets the loudest most obnoxious exhaust they can possibly get for these things so everyone is used to not hearing the engine clattering away like a Mexican maraca on those pieces of junk!

    • @omarsalgado9715
      @omarsalgado9715 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nonyabiz9487 What pieces of junk are still running after 50 or more years? Certainly, not many of your Jap crap. You can see plenty of old Harleys still running strong. So, yes, your opinion is highly biased.

    That exhaust is beyond rare. Can't say that I've seen another one like it. I thought '76's had staggered duals.

      If memory serves me correctly, that is the stock exhaust (hence the quite exhaust note). Harley had a hard time meeting the mandated noise regulations due to the engine's unique exhaust note, ringing cooling fins, roller bearing crank, rods, cam, gears (harmonics) and having the carburetor and exhaust on one side of the engine. Beautiful stock bike.

    Big brother bought one of these !
    I was 15 years old ; we unloaded it off of his pickup , and I had a friend from high school there with me .
    I almost crapped my pants when he said - “ you want to take it for a ride down the road ? “
    I jumped on it and he grabbed my arm with a death grip and stuck his face in MY face and asked me -
    “ you remember how to ride and all that I taught you , right ? “
    I said yes and squeeze down on the clutch and put it in first gear and before he could change his mind , I eased that clutch out and rode away !
    Bla ha ha !
