I also watched the show before the manga, and I might be an outlier, but I think I preferred the show a little more. I liked that they aged Arisu up a bit and made him obsessed with games. It felt like it made a little more sense to me. As for the death of his friends, I felt more with the show than the manga, but I think that was because I watched the show first and by the time I read the manga, I was just skimming to see if there were any major differences. I don't think they could really put their death any later in the season given they didn't have a season 2 greenlit yet and Netflix's tendency to cut off new shows at the knees if they don't immediately become the next big lends to the rushing of season ones. The show kept pretty good pace with the manga in that sense, at almost a 1:1 ratio, which is pretty good considering our copies of AiB are technically omnibuses. Though I am interested to see what season 3 is going to be about given season 2 wrapped up with the manga.

I also preferred the show a little more especially season 2 the changes they made to the story just made it that much better to me! But, I really enjoyed the manga at the same time and idk Arisu’s inner dialogue and friendship just lefta bigger impact, but maybe I just wasn’t paying attention in the beginning of the show (I’ll take any excuse to give it a rewatch after all 🤣)! Very true they might not have gotten a season 2 green lit from Netflix but I’m glad it did! I am not sure how I feel about there being a season 3 and that there is a sequel series called Alice in Borland Retry that I found out about while editing. But, I felt like the end was solid and wrapped it up nice so idk whether season 3 will adapt Retry or not but I’m curious how it’ll enhance or further the story in a meaningful way. Guess we’ll see!

I was so close to getting to Alice in Borderland before this video! I just finished reading Monster this evening, which what with work, and those pesky obligations to be social in the way🤣 took me longer than I expected to get through. Totally worth every moment though! I'm definitely excited to read Alice in Borderland, so you're glowing endorsements have certainly worked on me at least!🤣 I just started a vacation week without anything planned and I've got vol.1 in front of me ready to dive into! Hopefully I'll be back a little later on in the week to watch the rest of the video and give my thoughts on what I anticipate to be another great read!

@@MizzMangaChatzSo I finished Alice in Borderland last night! I thought it was excellent! I have so many thoughts on it I'm not sure where to begin.😅 I've actually never gotten into the whole survival genre to be honest. This was really my first exposure to it, and I had previously held a lot of possibly erroneous ideas about it that swayed me from ever really giving any it much of a chance. I felt like most of the ones I had heard about felt too base in many ways. A celebration of violence focusing on shock value with shallow allegories and death as a cheap rug to pull out from underneath you to engineer an emotional response. To trick you into thinking that the story carried far more weight than it actually does. That was absolutely not the case with Borderland! It was far more subtle and thought provoking than I expected! The world was harsh and brutal, but that overwhelming sense of apathy that I always assumed prevalent in the genre was absent for the most part. These people weren't the play things of some bored elites in a dystopian world, their journeys meant something! If I had to sum it up in one word, I would say it was heavy. I will eventually swing back around to this as I try to touch on some of the things you mentioned in the video, but for starters, every person in Borderland had developed some deep despondency in the real world. Life had lost its luster for all of them and the lure of escapism became insatiable. Each had varying reasons for being fed up with the world, but all of them shared a desire to be done with it. Then they find themselves in Borderland and all of a sudden, many of the problems in their previous life suddenly became insignificant. It was so interesting to see how each character responded to suddenly being thrust into life and death situations on a regular basis. How easy would it have been to just cave in? Many of the characters had completely lost the will to live in their previous lives, but when suddenly faced with death, that will resurfaced in force! These lives that they previously thought meaningless and a curse suddenly became so incredibly precious! What can they will themselves to endure just to see another dawn? Why would they? The only reward as far as they know, the privilege of another breath! That's the crux of it. One big existential crisis. What is life worth and what are we willing to endure just to keep on existing! Why are we here and why do we live? Who are we living for? There's no universal answer, hell there isn't even anything bordering a correct answer! It's unique to every person! It takes the concept of needing the winds and the rain to enjoy the sunshine and amps it up a hundred fold! The series gave me so, so much to contemplate! It was subtle, and thought provoking, and at the heart of it all was a psychological inquiry into life in general! It's no coincidence that the majority of games we see are hearts games. They dig into the major themes that the manga wants to explore. Even the other games we see heavily involve psychology. The diamonds games later on are just as much about knowing how the other players think as they are about solving a puzzle. The King of Clubs game is just as much about what you're willing to sacrifice as it is any kind of strategy! I haven't watched the show, but I think that focus on the psychological aspects of the games is probably the major difference between the two. It sounds like the show is more action based which makes sense. It's hard to convey the inner battles a character faces well on screen without a ton of inner monologues, which would totally ruin the pace of a show. That action focus is almost certainly the reason for the differences in the latter part of the show/series. I agree that Dodo wasn't a great character and I can see why the show cut him. I can also see why he was important in the manga. Aguni and Heiya were both kinda terrible people pre Borderland and Dodo, as well as shoehorning another Alice in Wonderland character in, represents innocence and naivete. He is a child with generally good intentions and his existence serves as a redemption arc for both. Aguni has been trying to get someone to kill him because he feels worthless. All he does is take and impose, culminating in overwhelming guilt when kills his best friend. Dodo's acceptance and reliance on him gives him purpose. Similarly, Heiya has an iron clad will to survive, but it's only for herself. By putting herself in harm's way to fight the King of Spades and help both Aguni and Dodo, her character shows an ability to rise above her selfishness, which previously had been her main motivation for survival. I also thought that the King of Spades was terrifying! His fight definitely worked for me! It takes up almost the entirety of the 7th omnibus. I get wanting the fight to involve more characters which would lend to a more epic feel, but I also felt that only Aguni and Heiya were capable of facing him. He goes through every player he comes up against with ease. None of them have the combat or survival skills to even scratch him. It felt to me pretty well established that numbers gave no advantage against him so facing him was essentially forfeiting the game. Aguni doesn't want to live, Dodo is fleeing, and Heiya gets caught in the middle when Dodo triggers her traps while fleeing. Fighting the King of Spades is tantamount to suicide, so no one would willingly do it who wants to survive, which is very much at the forefront of every other player's mind. Ultimatley it's Aguni's fight and no one else's. He needs it to complete his arch. In my opinion, thematically it works better that way. I do get where you're coming from, but I personally like the way the manga handled that fight. It's all about the reasons for living and persevering. As for the final game, it also makes sense to me why only Arisu and Usagi enter. Every hearts game we've seen has been incredibly cruel, often pitting players against each other in the most psychologically damaging ways imaginable. Everyone waiting around outside the final game had become close friends and the idea of having to kill a friend is prevalent throughout the series. Arisu and Usagi are each other's reasons for continuing on. They, more than anyone else are willing to die for each other. The whole leaving it up to chance was kinda dumb, but also fits into the communal themes highlighted in the King of Clubs game.(if you haven't figured ot out already, they were just playing rock, paper, scissors to decide😂) They all saw themselves as equals so they let fate decide. I also admit that it's impossible for me to judge with path is better since I've never seen the show.🤣 I also really liked the end! They got to decide, to a certain degree, whether they survived the meteor strike. I love the concept that the games were a struggle for life and death on more than one level! Also, I think you missed a little detail. I'm almost positive that all of the players, dealers, and citizens all came to Borderland during that one specific disaster. At one point earlier when some players are wondering about the games it's stated that they all saw the "fireworks" on the same day, but they enter Borderland at different intervals throughout the games. It's also always July in Borderland. At the end it says that 2000 people were confirmed dead and 20000 or something like that injured. I think those 2000 are those who died in all of the Borderland games. I'm positive that several of the face cards name's appear on the casualty reports on tv. Like I said earlier, everybody in Borderland had lost the will to go on in the real world, so I don't think it was just a case of them all experiencing a shared purgatory on the knife's edge of death. I think they were specifically chosen and gifted the opportunity to find a reason, a purpose for in life! Just another neat little detail that Haro Aso wove into the ending! Whew! I feel like I've been going on for forever, but have barely scratched the surface!🤣 If you have any thoughts or opinions on my thoughts and opinions, or have more you'd like to discuss, things I might have missed, things that you found intriguing etc. I'd love to hear them! Thanks for introducing me to this fantastic series!
