You're normally pretty spot on in terms of info but this ain't it. Everyone knows not to get hype cards or cards on release
Getting a 10% ROI in stocks is considered a good return. (Maybe even decent?) If someone on Wall Street doubles their money in 3 years, they would consider that an amazing investment. Some of these booster boxes were Sub 90 dollars at one point. Even though I think some of these booster boxes are way too expensive, you cannot deny that whey were good investments.
If they sell they're more you spend the more likely it becomes that you will be SITTING on excess stock for a while. People need to invest more realistically i wouldn't ever buy more than 50 of any box. The amount of people that bought over 100 of JP 151 are insane, it's going to take years to find those buyers and unless your rich or have a lot of storage space if just isn't realistic too hold on to all that.

Sorry man. Disagree on the sealed product side. If I can beat 10% realized rate of return per year, it's a good investment. This has absolutely been the case with most sealed booster boxes over a 3 year period... Many much higher than that.
You supposedly taught business courses… and you don’t think that passively 2.5-4.5x on your money in 3 years is good?

If you think moonbreon has reached it's ceiling then give it two years and let's which ages worse. My comment or this video. Full disclosure, I'm not invested in this card but I'm not daft. And as to the point on booster boxes, it's all about percentage gains. Boosters are a safe investment and all sets (to varying degrees) go up after they go out of rotation. The usual cycle for a booster box is 2-5 years.
To mention booster boxes such as Chilling Reign only netting you an extra 100 odd over 3 years is disingenious. You're not considering the initial amount paid and return ratio. Any other investing instrument with those returns would be outstanding. Even after selling fees and postage making a minimum of 50% on top of what you paid is great, Imagine sticking 10,000 in a savings account and after 3 years the amount in there is 15,000 and thinking that was bad.
A thing alpt of investors don't consider is also SELLING 10k worth of product. Shit is not easy and it takes time. Really only booster boxes strictly pack products move. Tins, collections etc. All struggle to move in bulk. A few here and there sure but sitting on 1000 eeveelution promo boxes is going to be a bit of struggle to get through

Glad I got the Iono cards, even the promo from the Premium Tournament collection, before she'll eventually skyrocket in price in the coming years.
Don’t assume my investment! I’m vacuuming an absolutely amazing card at a steal right now and probably won’t stop until it starts going for 5 dollars then I’ll stop and hold and finally dump my supply at like 40-50 in 3 to 5 years fingers crossed. Crazy underpriced promos out there guys good luck.
The squirtle promo was not actually free if you consider that the 151 upc was available at other game stores for much less than msrp. Also it is much harder to guess which promo will do well vs buying booster boxes from each set
Brought my moonbreon for £90. Hard to beleive now i almost didn't buy it thinking it was expensive.
I bought two es booster boxes for 300 each, They have now doubled in less than a year!
Ah, but cards like the Van Gogh Pikachu (and Special Delivery Pikachu/Zard/Bidoof, etc.) were almost or totally free, so the fact that they are selling for amounts like $90 (or quite a bit more in the case of the SDB) makes it a pretty good "investment." Assuming that someone did not pay market price for them, of course...
The more and more I keep watching this the more and more I feel terrible for anyone who takes any of this advice. I’m so sorry for your losses

The answer is yes, that is good, to get a near 5x return on your money in 3 years. Percentages > dollars.

I think anything going up $200 a year is impressive. Whether Pokémon cards or stocks. Lots of other sets are continuing to grow, and if you think multiples here… $200 per year x 6 (a case) is $1200 a year for doing nothing. Investing in sealed is always a return if you buy at a low typically 6m - 1yr after release

The core of the argument stands and makes sense: more unique, more rare, best condition. Like what I believe smpratte has said for so long, older, rarer, minty-er. But, as everyone is saying here, booster boxes do make sense to hold on to. For me, even with a townhouse and basement, I’m not going to take up room in my house for boxes and boxes of sealed boosters. Everything has a cost. I’m honestly interested in what the hoarders are using for their storage space, and what it costs them
My piece of advice is: “Never trade in your doubles of special art cards, you never know what will hit so its good to have a spare just in case it does.”
Unless you want to master sets… otherwise sure.

The only major investment I've made is traded in with a shop. Traded in £200 of spare cards I had in folders, for a serial set of PSA 10 Japanese Charmander evolution line from 151 😊 love them
151 is the only set currently with the same potential
Thankfully, there aren't people on TH-cam who hype cards and sets on release or people who tell you how absurdly awesome cards are, when they're quite ordinary. 👍
I had the great luck to have pulled a Gold Star Umbreon strait from a POP pack on my birthday many moons ago. It now sits safely tucked away in my bank vault 😅

I got my lost origin box for $155 6 months ago and it’s gone up a decent bit since then
evolving skies returns are "crazy good" and not just "decent". what other investments would give you that kind of return? even chilling reign is pretty good considering it was available for $90 or even less so that's double in 3 years. the squirtle promo wasn't a no-brainer at that time because you could get the upc for around $100 from other stores at that point. also, it's going to be easier to sell a booster box than a promo card.

Bought 7 booster boxes of ES for around $150 Canadian ($110 USD?) They are now closing in on $950 Canadian. I've 6x my initial cost and it's "only" been 3 years. I only wish I bought more.
This was actually a pretty bad take. Buying evo skies at $100ish goes to $700 in 3 years is “decent” ?? Yet the 151 promo was the best investment move🤣 did I miss something?

Let's say I bought 1000 "shares" of evolving skies BB's for $150,000 in 2021. In 2024, if I can then sell that stock for $700,000 I am on track to retire quite early 😂
Are you like 16? Because you clearly don't understand how much money 150k is if you think it's smart to invest that much into cards unless you already have millions in disposable income, in which case you're already set to retire.

The scenario I presented isn't a real one. It's an example of what that growth looks like using larger numbers because our friend here didn't feel like a $150 product increasing to $700 in a three year time frame was a great return. I politely disagreed, so I figured I would share the example.

Let's also say these shares can't be sold back to the company. (Because they're not shares they're product.) You know have to find dozens of buyers willing to buy dozens of product. 700$ ES is already a hefty price tag. How are you gonna move 150k worth? You hoping an army of pokerevs buys you out?

A lot of salty and bad takes in these comments. Wossy isn't saying ES was a bad investment in general, just that the window for that investment has passed and investing in it NOW versus when it came out is a bad idea. He is also saying that while ES was a good investment option, current or even past sets are not pulling anywhere near the same numbers as ES and would not yield the kinds of returns ES enjoyed. He is right in saying that people's focus on just collecting cases upon cases of booster boxes and etb's isn't going to be where the money's at. But I suppose we could just let the fools keep chasing the low hanging fruit while the real catch goes to those who would enjoy it more anyway.

Ya, he’s approaching this in the wrong light. Sure it’s “only $200 per year”, BUT people that are truly investing have most likely got at least 1-3 cases of this stuff.
You’re looking at the profit being able to pay for a great used car outright; or alternatively a very solid down payment on a brand new ride (just giving a more tangible example for illustrative purposes).
Honestly though, let’s just say we look at it like he is and that the vast majority of people do only have 1-2 BOXES… well, if you’re investing correctly then you’re perfectly fine with not seeing that money for a long long time, so even a “meager” $200/yr is all you see on what you invested, that’s still $600 that you didn’t have!
You’d be very hard pressed to find investments pay off like this set has in the vast majority of fields. It just doesn’t happen often.
Sure, you gotta sell them, I get it. What he’s not seeing is that within the next 2-5 years, this set will be the new “base set” that people are gonna buy in at $300/pack from influencers. Even if it takes a year to sell them all, it’s not like it takes that much effort to have the listing(s) running, nor packing/shipping. You’re still looking at beaucoup bucks in profit.
Even if these don’t move much higher (they will at least 25%) for another 5 years, the investment was a great one either way.
