Funnily enough I bought an M1903 Mauser from a friend about two years ago, which I was able to identify thanks to this video! Although it was a Praguian Mauser given to the Ottomans because it has the screwed on bridge extension. Sadly it had been sporterized slightly, the stock is still in pristine condition, however the tangent sight was replaced with a 1.5-20x Simmons scout scope, and it had been rechambered in 7.62x51NATO (I used a lot of experimentation to see what it was chambered in and remote fired it at the range with a string the first time I put 7.62 into it) I traded it to a friend back in April for an early war sporterized Type 99 Arisaka, he got a nice shooter and I got my weeb gun.

By the way, I don't know you guys find out the meaning of writing on the rifle but if you didn't, the part written in Ottoman Turkish says "Obrendorf'da Mavzer Silah Fabrikası" which means "Mauser Weapon Factory in Obrendorf (or Oberndorf I suppose)".

Along with the intermediate length receiver, and tall clip bridge, these Mausers are unique in having the large receiver ring paired with the small diameter barrel shank of the smal ring Mausers. I've read that this was done to allow Turkish arsenals to only deal with one barrel type.

My german grandfather who was in ww2 in the wermacht and also had a gun shop for 40 years always taught that you should pull the rifle into your shoulder with your left hand (if shooting right handed) and that the trigger finger hand should only rest on the grip to squeeze the trigger and should not in any way be used to pull the rifle back into the shoulder. Try it!
They are not cheap. I bought mine for $450. Years ago, I had a VZ 24, from Slovakia and back then in 1995, I paid $300 that one was full of cosmoline, well I gave it to my brother with the promise he will keep it.Once I returned from the war in Iraq I find out he had sold them, along with a Swedish Mauser. Never again!! This one is for me to keep..Mausers are great rifles, I found the one I presently purchased at a gun shop when I was looking to purchase the elusive 1903 Springfield which the gun shop had Sold just few days prior of my purchase.
Very lucky to have one of these. Mine though has an inscription in English with the Turkish crescent stamped on. It also has a kar98 bolt disassembly port on the stock.
Were they Beechwood like the later variants? I know they acquire tons of it from the Caucasus and Balkan regions. Not pretty but strong as steel. Do they have the "straight-up" safety position for the bolt lock and a not the safest by today's standard "half safe, half ready" position? I think at straight up, the bolt will open to load or unload but will not fire while leaving it a click with one thumb away from go mode. I used it when I was set up for my shots waiting for the game to take that one last step from behind a tree or angle away a bit with constant eye contact. Kinda like the M1911 thumb sweep down safety. Neat. I wouldn't ask with it as it's spring lugged and can be bumped off easily but war implements were different, and its a thumb and forefinger full off from full-on maneuver and if that's not to be done until the fire decision is made, I can appreciate a quick right thumb flip done from center ready while fingering to the trigger when the Hun Whitetail is glassing you and deciding he should have done the same. The left thumb push up and in on the Steyr is a slick move too for sure. I rarely rifle hunt, but when I do, I head to the 800 acres of dairy farm we leave open to the public and just take an ungodly old and large war rifle, shoot nothing and use it as a conversation piece to see the folks I only see yearly on openers. The nest days are when they give me permission to hunt there or use one of 'their blinds" lol. I let it go, usually, they run into somebody else that says "Hey how's Dick's Grandson doing? Saw you talking to him." We laugh it off and have a beer usually unless they are total outta town assholes. Gotta be careful who you tell to FO in small towns, everybody is related, or I'm trying to get related to one of their own to speak the truth lamo.
What's the revolver the guy second from left at 2:58 is wearing in his belt? Is that a Gasser or Webley type lever on the right side of it, or simply a rearward-opening loading gate as on the The Chamelot-Delvigne 11mm Modele 1873 or similar? Are baronets hard to find and/or collectible in the US now? When I was a teen I remember one surplus store in San Francisco had what I believe were WW1 baronets by the hundreds just thrown into bins.
A Mauser 98 that's bad? How about the original Kar.98 adopted in the 1900s, that the German army abandoned because it was far too short and caused a number of issues? Of course, finding one of those for the show might be a problem.

Currently I use synthetic motor oil for most applications since it’s the same stuff I use for my truck and it’s good enough for an engine it’s definitely decent at keeping a gun going. (Also I put my guns barrel down in my safes because I don’t like buggering up wood stocks.)
@@allangibson2408 WD40 is a solvent, not a lubricant! It really should be used to break something loose and clean out the mechanism. After that, you should lubricate your gizmo with whatever oil/grease/lube is appropriate. Leaving just WD40 behind is going to make it freeze again.
@@xFatCommandox WD40 was never a lubricant except by accident. It is a wax coating dissolved in a low viscosity solvent. The residual wax is what gums up the works in tight tolerances. You actually need to wash the wax off to make oils work.

Seeing these patern mauser is making wonder about a 7mm mauser I own, it's got a 98 action, takes model 93 style stripper clips, got a straight bolt handle and an H band and 98 style bayonet lug, according to the person I brought it from it was used in the Anglo Boer war from 1899-1902. It also have a tangent rear sight but without the 50 m clicks and marked on the receiver with Deutsche waffen und munitions Berlin, no other markings except the serial number and C 0.7mm on the left side of the rear sight. Any ideas?
Also a bit unlikely, in the time frame of those rifles the two Boer Republics did not have standing armies except artillery, the army was millitia called to arms and each man was to bring a rifle about 70 rounds and a weeks worth of provisions, rifles were sold at cost to the burgers, so it was not kept in arsenal or as state property.
They actually address this at one point. Cant remember what video or the height they gave for her but she's apparently quite close to the average height of a soldier in ww1

How to improve it? Polygonal rifling, give it a knob on the cocking piece like everyone else, dust cover like Manchurian type 13 (or just taking that bolt altogether.) have the bolt handle come out at a lower angle. Give it Lee Enfield ergonomics, probably with the aid of the Bloke. Better sights, diopter s. Don't think you can move them back though. Move the front sight back just like post war Spanish models for grenade launching. Free floated barrel and rails. 🤣 How to make it worse? Give it a meter long barrel and/or give it a pistol grip so you can cut the stock off. Change it for 22 short or move it back to 318 or chamber it for 12.7. It would Ian's day. PS. And have Remington do it.
You *can* move the rear sights back on a Mauser 89/93/98 pattern rifle if the new sights don't rely on a sliding tangent for adjustment. Case in point: Springfield M1903A3.
If you want a bad Mauser try the Spanish made Mauser/Oviedos M1927 sold to Paraguay for the Chaco war "The outnumbered Paraguayans slowly but surely advanced against material odds until they eventually won control of almost all the Chaco. They were much better motivated and led. WD40 works really well for what it was designed for. It’s just most people don’t have an Atlas missile in their backyard that needs corrosion protection from nitric acid.

Othias teaches us that WD40 makes action sticky if it’s tight but not so much when it’s sloppy. 😳
WD40 leaves a waxy deposit behind when it evaporates - filling small gaps with glue and providing a film in larger gaps.

You *can* move the rear sights back on a Mauser 89/93/98 pattern rifle if the new sights don't rely on a sliding tangent for adjustment. Case in point: Springfield M1903A3.
