Inherited this record from my grandparents and instantly fell in love. It was my soundtrack driving home through California as well. I love how the beat sounds like someone banging two tools and metal together. Jan and Dean forever 💯 🏁

On first single the percussion was done by beating a children's table or bike.

There is "MUCH" to say about this song... this was recorded in 1963 by a "MAJOR" recording duo... it was before Frank Zappa... it was before Captain Beefheart... it was "AFTER" Spike Jones... the parts ONE and TWO are album tracks and do not make sense on a b-side single at all due to the stereo magic that Jan Berry created in the studio. See, part one is the last track on the "A" side of the lp. part two is the first track on the "B" side... on "A" all the music and vocals are set either on left or right speakers... when you "FLIP" the record all of the vocals that were left or right flip to opposite speakers... very genius in 1963... people need to wake up to the genius that was Jan Berry.

How did they steal Phlo & Eddie's schtick years and years before they did it.

there was no Flo and Eddie then... funny how Dean was close to the Turtles isn't it.@@Ronsonic

" years and years before they did it" That's my point. This was an original. @@TheGuyMullins

My first LP at the age of 13. I met Dean before a promo concert in Pittsburgh in 2000 and mentioned Schlock Rod. He laughed and said to me "Both Parts 1 and 2!". We had a nice chat. Great guy!

My mom bought this 45 RPM (Part 1) when it came out and I inherited it in the late 1970s when I started getting into music myself. I STILL have that original 45.

Just read in Dean's book "Surf City" that the duo were clowning around and decided to record it like Alley Oop with the vocals said, rather than sang. They were really happy with the result...as am I!

Imagine the mood in the recording studio among the professional musicians when this idea was pitched to them. Would've loved to have been a part of this session. What a hoot!

I think this is where Emo Phillips got the idea for his voice! This was my first record. Sister Cyndi took me to the record store (Neal Prices) with the understanding that I would choose a 45 that SHE liked! Bless her heart, I ended up with Drag City & Schlock Rod!!! It's still tucked away with all of my other possessions...it will outlast ME!

Heard "part 1" almost 40 years ago on Dr. Demento, and instantly loved it. Never knew there was a part 2. Thanks for posting.

SO... part one is on side A of the lp... the last song... flip it and it is the FIRST cut on B and as in "FLIP" all the tracks that were on the left are now on the right and vice versa... many people in the 60's only listened to Hits and only bought singles so you guys missed out on the genius of Jan Berry...

LOL. I remember hearing this (the 1st part) when I was a kid. Only found it online once when I was trying to tell someone it existed. They thought I was crazy. When I searched for it now on youtube, I kept seeing part & 2 and was like, this is no part 2 dammit! I guess I was wrong! LOL Always loved this song and now I got to hear part 2. Thanks for the post!

Used to listen to this as kids, and once in a while played the other side, "Drag City." This should have been the A side, we all agreed.

My "Schlock Rod" is a 1993 Buick.... So it's almost 30 years old. Yet, his Buick was still a "late model".... Guess I'm lucky.
