A Doctor in the House: The Murder of Marilyn Sheppard, 1954

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 9 ก.พ. 2025
- In the early hours of the morning of 4th July 1954, the Mayor of Bay Village, Ohio, received a call from Dr Sam Sheppard, saying his wife had been murdered. The mayor and his wife rushed to Dr Sheppard's home on Westlake Road, and there found Sam Sheppard with a black eye - and Sam's wife, Marilyn, dead. She had been bludgeoned to death in a ferocious attack. When the police arrived they were puzzled: there was no sign of a break-in and items of obvious value had not been taken... They soon began to suspect that all was not as it seemed...

Well, Mr Bobby Hall, your (sic) in a real pickle. Here you are, forced to watch this show . . . What’s that? You’re not forced to watch it?
Well, the host of this show, who is obviously an expert in the application of Occam’s Razor, might suggest that you not subject yourself to such torment and change channels.
Do ads, it's not a problem! I can't support content creators but I can watch ads.
You have the best crime channel! You deserve monetization!
I don’t think I ever get as excited about a new video on TH-cam as I do for yours Mark…thank you
John how wonderful to hear your voice, your as vintage as a good wine and as welcome as the opening lines of an Alec Guinness Movie. Far too precious!
Ah - that's very kind of you, Tony: thank you!
I immediately dropped everything I was doing to watch you.... I have enjoyed your books too!
Same and I was watching my favorite bi-weekly podcast~and it's live streaming!!!

Your writing and art are grand. Pen, ink and wash drawings are mental pictures that convey personal perceptions always unique to the artist. Always appreciated.
Thank you very much, Roger - I always enjoy doing a few representations of scenes for which there couldn't possibly be any photos!
I recommend this channel to my friends every time I listen!
That is especially generous of you, Victoria - thank you very much!

One of the BEST underrated channels on TH-cam!!
Much love from northern Indiana ❤️
Absolutely!
Thank you very much indeed, Tamara!
Such a sad story, yet another masterpiece from you, which very much up to your usual high standards, Mark! Your talents are too exceptional for TH-cam! Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it - thank you very much, Madonna!
Thank you for your well presented and written presentation. You look very happy and healthy during your introduction. I'm writing my first novel at the moment, at the tender age of 62, and draw influence from your storytelling.
How nice - I am flattered! I wish you luck with the novel: perseverance is the key...
Yippee!!!! Been eagerly awaiting a new episode! Glad to see you!!
Me too. I check every day.
Thank you very much, Cora!
This happened not too far from where I live and in the city where my dad grew up. It’s a beautiful community west of Cleveland. I’ve heard bits and pieces about the case, so it will be nice to hear your take on it. Nice to see you and I hope 2024 is treating you well.
Thank you very much, Christine - and all the best for 2024 to you too!
So glad to see your new story! Thanks for presenting these true crimes in a professional manner!
Thank you very much indeed, Shoshaunna - you are most kind!
I’m having flashbacks to law school in Tennessee. This is a landmark case studied in all US law schools but not for what you may think. It set the precedent of a Constitutional violation in the event of heavy press coverage speculating as to the guilt of a defendant.
And rightly so. I think Sheppard was guilty but the media circus was appalling.
Darn it, I'm going to be late to bed again. Thank you for yet another brilliant episode!
Hahaha - many thanks! I hope it was worth staying up for in the end!
@@TheyGotAwayWithMurder Yes, it jolly well was!
Thank you Mark. What a lovely Easter Surprise! Good morning from Oz and happy Easter

I was very glad to receive notification of another one of your spectacular storytellings. Your ability to bring color back to those involved in these tragedies long since forgotten is truly remarkable.

Just subscribed to Short Stories for Dark Nights! I'm so happy to hear MORE! Thank you, sir. 🇨🇦
So good to know - thank you Victoria!
So glad to see you’re back online!
Thank you very much, Christine!
The police sketch of the bushy-haired man is very disappointing. His hair is nowhere near bushy enough. If I caught sight him at a supermarket, for example, I wouldn't cry out "There goes a bushy-haired man!". As for Sam Sheppard - revolting man - guilty as a puppy sitting next to a pile of poop. Thanks very much, Mark for all your hard work in bringing us this detailed exploration of the case, a wonderful treat to listen to. Can't wait for your next short story on "Short Stories For Dark Nights channel", too! 😁xx
The story is loosely used for the American TV show of 1963, “ The Fugitive.” (Edit) Oh, you addressed this fact!
Yes!
The movie "The Fugitive" was also based on the popular television series "The Fugitive" starring David Janssen as Richard Kimball.
Love your stories. Listen to your Murder stories still every night. Fall asleep to your voice.
Thank you for your work!
Just hopped over to subscribe to your short stories channel. I am a huge fan of your work and while I am surprised I had missed your other channel for so long I am looking forward to enjoying the content.

Well done, Mark. I think you've definitely cracked it, as you have so often before. Excellent analysis.
Abandoned my marking of essays for a break of sanity. Thank you SO very much! Love this one.
I love the whole thing - your writing, narrating and your illustrations
His art and voice are outstanding!
I am delighted - thank you very much, Kathleen!
The husband hardly injured and the bushy haired stranger are so incredulous today. I was eye-rolling at his explanations.
He most certainly is guilty.
I agree!
I think so!
I think Sheppard was so arrogant that he didn't think a meticulous alibi was necessary. I suspect he thought his professional standing and his family's prominence were enough for him to be believed whatever he said.
Good to see you. I remember like yesterday, and I've changed my mind multi-times since, guilty, innocent, back and forth.
Yay the Masetro! I was shocked to see the notification. Now time to listen. This was well done, and thank you for the meticulous job and work you but in to this, great job great job. Watching this again.
So glad you liked it - thank you!
I’ve missed this… welcome back.

Thank you Mark. Your stories work without commercial interruptions.
Thanks Bobby. I have never allowed adverts - although I understand that YT can now insist on it and impose them on me... So far I am not aware that they have!
Brilliant! I missed your stories over the last few months and was delighted to see this 🤩
Thank you very much, Nicola - so glad you liked it!
I am so grateful you have addressed this horrible crime. I was seven years old in 1954, living in the upper midwest USA when the murder was committed, so it seems odd that I would have even been aware of the story but for the fact that Otto Graham's name was mentioned in the news and I was a football fan. That bit of trivia had lain dormant all these years until coming upon your superb exposition;. I was truly filled with glee when this came up on TH-cam. All of your work is excellent and I look forward to your next installment. Thank you.
Thank you very kindly, Michael - I had not previously heard of Otto Graham (being British) but looked him up after coming across him in this case. He seems to have been a neighbour and friend of the Sheppards but told police he knew little of the relationship between husband and wife. The astonishing thing is that he, like so many others, was allowed to walk into the crime scene that morning and view it! Innocent days!
I've now listened to this several times. The TV series "The Fugitive" had me write 'Kimble WAS innocent' on my school satchel when the series ended. If only I knew then what I know now (how many times has that phrase been uttered I wonder 😢) and I could find that satchel again I would have to add a footnote. This episode was eagerly awaited and I've been replaying all the rest of your uploads over and over again. Thanks. A small contribution will follow through in due course. ❤
Thank you very much - you were not wrong, though: Kimble was definitely innocent! A great series...
Another excellent video. Have missed you terribly, so glad you are back with your soothing voice.
Thank you for another great story.
You are most welcome!
Yay another wonderful story from Mark!! 😊😊 Unbelievably happy to see and was just rewatching some older ones from the channel. The Sheppard case is certainly fascinating and I'll give this a listen once I'm tucked in bed with the winter rain and wind outside 🎉
Thank you, Omar - I hope you will enjoy it!
Hurrah! Was only saying last night to the other half, its been a while since we heard one of your fantastic narratives! Thank you Mark, great to hear your voice again!
Glad you enjoyed it and thank you!
Your'e Back !!! yay!! wev'e missed you!
Yes, indeed - thank you, Charlotte!
Really missed your videos, so glad you are back. You truly are a master story teller. Being able to tell a story really well, is not easy, it is a skill which not everybody has. Listening to your soothing voice while lying in bed at the end of a long day, is just wonderful. Thank you .
I'm so glad to see another of your excellent videos! I picked up on the fact that the little boy was groggy and wondered if he had been drugged. Horrible as it is, I think you've hit the nail on the head - he was going force an abortion on his wife, and it all went wrong when she woke up and began to fight
Thank you, Merla - the boy and the dog being groggy or non-responsive, stood out for me from my first readings of the case, also. It seems to me to be important.
We've missed you Mark!! Great job, as always.
Great to see you back! Looking forward to watching 😊
Thank you - I hope you like it!
So happy to see you!!! Thanks for the update and new upload!!
You are so welcome Tara - thank you!

Many thanks, Natalie - I hope it lived up to your expectations!
I’ve been missing this show! Glad you’re posting again. I think I’ll order your other book today. Maybe I’ll order both because I loaned the one I had to my sister, not knowing that I was dropping it into the abyss. Never to be seen again. 😢
Thank you very much! Still, it is a nice idea that you loaned it to your sister - I do hope she read it! :)
Will not lend my books. Have even bought copies for friends rather than turn my darlings lôose in the world.😂😂😂😂
That's wild, I was just checking some of my favorite channels to see if anything new was out and I thought "oh man, I haven't seen anything from they got away with murder for quite awhile" so I looked and couldn't believe it's been 4 months since anything new came out (not counting the short story 3 months ago) and literally 15 minutes later this comes up on my feed. Now I have to decide on indulging now or waiting until the grandkids in bed ( he's 7 and hyperactive..lol) and it's quiet and I can really enjoy it.
I'm glad you are looking forward to it - and hope it meets your expectations! Thanks!
Just found this channel and it’s the sort of thing I’ve been searching for for years! A nice, calm narrative voice and older, not always well known, murder cases. Thank you!
Boy did Hollywood whitewash this case! Never heard most of the aspects of the Sheppard family, including his son, his mistress, the drugs and Marilyn's pregnancy 😳 Dying at 46 of self destructive behavior was karma 🤣 Another excellent investigation 👏
Thank you very much!
I was raised in Bay Village. Although I was born 10 years after the murder, and I can tell you that this murder was a hot topic 20-30 after the fact. I have many memories of family get togethers when, after imbibing for a bit, the adults would invariably argue for his guilt or innocence. For what it’s worth, family members who were Sam’s contemporaries seemed to think he didn’t do it. My grandmother was especially vociferous in her defense of Sam.
Thank you for this video essay. As awful as the topic is, you’ve unlocked fond memories from my childhood. Thank you. ❤
Yes! I've been waiting for more. Great to see more from you. I'm saving up a few of your short stories for a lazy evening too. 🙂
Wonderful! Thank you, Ruth!
I have been waiting to listen to a new video on my favorite TH-cam channel for a little while...Welcome back ! Cheers !
If Sam heard his wife scream, ran upstairs, Marilyn couldn't have been hit 35 times, she would have been too dead to scream
Yes, she didn’t only scream with the last couple of blows. It really looks like he was guilty!
Yes, we drop everything for this notification!😂 And, every night a short story. ❤ 🇳🇱
Good to hear! Thanks Ellie!
Happy for your return! Your writing, artistry, demeanor, music and video production are impeccable.
Thank you kindly, Bill - much appreciated!
Superbly and enthrallingly narrated. Thank you and best wishes from Australia.
Thank you very much indeed - very good wishes to you too!
What a interesting case thank you mark and welcome back..
Thank you very much, Barbara!
This is going to be good. Thank you Mr. Maguire.
Thanks for your confidence - I hope it was! :)
The depth of research was superb, and unlike other video essays I struggled to find any other explanation than that Sam was indeed a brutal killer who did indeed get away with murder. Being a story from across the pond perhaps meant as an English man I did not enjoy it as much as the crimes of the UK, but was non-the-less a brilliant tour de force by, in my humble opinion, was done by the very best of the genre. Your are without equal! Thanks again ! Rob
You're very kind indeed, Rob - thank you!
@@TheyGotAwayWithMurder Lots of misinformation on the part of McGuire.
Hello! I've missed your lyric voice and masterful storytelling. I've always found this case intereesting. Thank you for covering
Dorothy Kilgallen was involved in this case as a journalist and she was also a well known quiz show panelist on What’s My Line in the 50s and 60s. Her death was very strange and I would be interested if you could look into investigating it also to see if she too was murdered or if she really overdosed. She can be seen on TH-cam on old episodes of What’s My Line and she was brilliant.
Yes, I'm familiar with Dorothy Kilgallen, but didn't know know there were questions concerning her death...
@@TheyGotAwayWithMurder She was definitely murdered. It would be awesome to hear your take on this.
Dorothy Kilgallen was convinced that Sheppard was innocent and because she was a syndicated journalist whose columns spanned "coast to coast" her stance rankled with the Ohio press who discontinued her column for a while at least. There were very strong opinions and because Kilgallen had already become a household name on "What's My Line" three or four years earlier (and had a radio programme "Breakfast WithDorothy and Dick" (Dick being her husband) for several years before that and she was highly influential. She was actively questioning the findings of the Warren Commission into the assassination of JFK and was promising to publish bombshell findings when she was found dead in her apartment in November 1965 in NYC. There have been numerous questions raised about this. Your broadcast certainly suggests a damning verdict on the Sheppard case that Dorothy would have opposed - intrigue for us to mull over many decades later.
New subscriber to both channels! Thank you for your calm manner of delivery. I get so nervous listening to people who speak so fast and your writing is wonderful!
Thank you so much!
I have been so looking forward to this new video.

It is wonderful to have you back mr. Maguire with your special brand of story telling You were greatly missed . I agree with your conclusions that he murdered his pregnant wife This man was giving so many gifts and he threw them all away he was a very spoiled person that had many chances in life. A Story full of tragedies

I'm new to your channel and thought your telling of the Sheppard case was outstanding! You are an excellent storyteller, and I heard other versions of this story told but yours is the best and the most detailed. Thank you for sharing this and I'm looking forward to your next one!😊
Thank you so much, Claire - I appreciate that! Nice to meet you here.
Love the way you tell things. Thank you so much.
You are very welcome - thank you.
Happy Easter Mark!
Settling in to watch your video now
Happy Easter, Nina - and hope you enjoyed it!
Thank you for bringing this tragic story to light. Given our current legal climate and advances in forensics here in the US, Sheppard would definitely be found guilty today.
Really!? OJ wasn't. Even though the likelihood of someone else having killed Nicole was larger than the population of the entire Earth.
All it takes is stupid jurors who don't understand the DNA evidence or even that wet leather shrinks as it dries, whether it's wet with water or blood. Duh.
I think you are right - forensics and police procedures in those days were comparatively lax.
Glad that you are okay. Missed your detail researched crime stories. Welcome back!
Many thanks - I'm glad to be back!
That was a gripping story ,so well narrated too ,I feel for the murder of the lady his wife ,what a nightmare
