Yeah man totally makes sense. You need your own tools to blaze your own trail. But now when I buy a Revstar people will say I'm trying to be Chris Buck
Chris. No matter what guitar I’ve seen you playing it always sounds like you. Distinctive, inspired and beautiful. Thanks for your great videos. Angelo
Just wanted to say Its such a pleasure to listen to your thoughts. You articulate yourself in such an elegant and clear mater, and there are so much to learn from your Friday freetworks videoes. Thanks for giving all this to us!
You’ve never sounded like Hendrix or SRV or Mayer even when playing a Strat but I get what you’re saying. It is easy to fall into doublestops and slides and big bends when you’re playing a Strat. Only a few actually find a recognizable voice on guitar. You are one of them. Thanks for the inspiration
@Anne O'Nymous I'm glad you got it all figured out. The truth is there's not much originality left in the Guitar World. Nowadays you're either a good player a bad player or a mediocre player. Nothing more nothing less. No one's going to reinvent the wheel anymore it's all been done. The greatest players in the world have already come and gone. And as far as this video goes I've identified at least 20 licks that aren't original.
@@BITESIZEJONES haha what?! There is so much more for people to discover in the guitar. It’s like Segovia use to talk about how the guitar contains all of the elements of an orchestra within it, you just have to draw it out. Yes there has been a lot of ground covered in guitars history but most of it has been fairly recent. Now we have more tools than ever both ideologically and literally. It’s not about reinventing the wheel it’s about getting in the car and going somewhere interesting whilst taking an interesting route. We live in a time of astounding musical freedom and potential.
@@BITESIZEJONES Well a lot of players are "reinventing guitar" Tim Henson of Polyphia is the best example, Mateus Asato, Yvvete young etc, I like how Guthrie sees it: combine everything u like, and thats unique, we all are a unique combination of stuff, maybe u like a certain movie and combine those music textures with SRV sound and boom =new
Nicely put! I love that we can grown and change in our playing. I'm in my late 60s with an advancing neurological condition that affects my hand coordination (along with walking difficulties etc). Your killing it on this channel, keep up the great work and thank you for everything you do 🙏
MORE OF THIS! Videos about you and your preferences and playing choices are so much more interesting than historical topics. I really liked this video!
This is one of the reasons why I own many different guitars, from strats, telys, Les Paul's, acoustics, Etc. Each one not only sounds different, but inspires me to play differently, giving me a fresh perspective over the last six strings that I've been playing, and expands my pallet of musical genres and playing styles.
Personally felt the Strat sounded better and never once felt it was an imitation of anything else. As a recently-turned-40-year-old dude who has played since I was 13, it’s amazing to see this guy play in his own style, no matter what the guitar. The highest compliment, in my mind, is this guy is completely his own thing and damn near impossible to replicate. So awesome to see these young guys (Billy Strings is another) pushing the boundaries of what’s possible on the instrument, strat or not. Just inspiring to watch!
It's funny, I have been playing since 1965. I don't think anyone would want to hear my wacky renderings, but I would know it was me in an instant. (bad fingering and all). We play to play and enjoy that part of our lives. It never seems to surprise me how creative one can be with a device I have worn the frets flat on.
Sir, I will say that your style and your musicality are uniquely your own; at least to my ears. I can fully appreciate why you've taken a step back from the Strat, though. Having that space to grow as a player is so important! Thanks for the awesome video!
Hand this man a cigar box with twine and stand back! I appreciated what you said. Your reflective humility is your strength. I hope young players follow you for all your facets as being a musician!
Honestly I think it's a great decision. You are one of the greatest in the modern generation. It is even more refreshing to hear your brilliantly unique style in a not so common tone. Plus it will inspire people to play different guitars. I'm totally with you on this.
Rejoining with Cardinal Black was sort of a fresh start so using a different guitar as well makes a lot of sense. It’s nIce to see some love for Yamaha guitars as well since they’re a bit underrepresented.
Chris, I totally agree with your point. I was a "Strat" man for 13+ years and when I went to a Les Paul my world just opened up to many different styles. It helped me mature my playing style.
Dunno how many vids i've watched over the years (too many to count) but you have the ability to cut through the noise and express your own voice, which is clear, unique and, well, beautiful.
Impressive insight and self-awareness. Not only am always blown away by your touch and creativity, my friend, but the fact that you are extremely articulate in conveying your thoughts and ideas. You hear about that being a trait of your country...that Welsh tongue. Well spoken, sir. Cheers from La Jolla, Kalifornia!
I have to say that having followed you for a few years now I never thought your playing reminded me of anyone on a strat or any other guitar. You are in the enviable position of sounding like you, even if you can hear your influences in your strat playing, most people don't.
I’m becoming a bit if a Chris Buck fan boy, at 43, I’ve got plectrums older than he is!😄 His tone and touch is another level, I can’t watch a Friday Fretworks without grabbing a guitar to (try and) steal a riff or two!
You've really inspired me since discovering your playing recently. You are a true talent. I've been trying to get better at guitar for ages but lacked motivation, but I've got that motivation to push myself now thanks to you. Cheers mate. All the best
I don‘t think that there are many guitarists on the planet who need to be *less* afraid of being mistaken for a clone of someone than you! The way you pick and the articulation phrasing and dynamics are all just so unique. You should play any guitar you Ike to play - just as all the other guitarists did that you mentioned.
What I love about your playing is how you make the guitar sound like a voice. Your voice! Lots of my favorite players do this. Jimi, Stevie, John, Derrick. And they each have their own distinct way of giving the guitar their voice. Thanks for adding your voice to a beautiful collection!! 🙌
As a guitar maker this makes me SO happy to hear! I totally understand where you're coming from and it's something that I've tried to convey through the guitars that I make. Nothing against Strats, the people that play them, or those who make countless copies of them but without trying new things the musicians, music, and even the guitars themselves never evolve or improve. Great video CB 👍 Awesome playing insight and perspective. 👏 The new Revstars are beautiful. I was really hoping for the Chris Buck Goldtop model. Oh well maybe 2023 🙏🤘💪
Awesome intro jam and while i'm still reeling from that, comes the end jam. Awesome player, no matter what guitar he plays. Truly inspiring wisdom as well.
Thanks for walking away from the strat! I’ll be here when you get back🤣 I love you on all guitars. I tried years ago, it didn’t stick. Keep crushing, from a long time fan
I've never thought of you as just a strat player Chris. Your style is unlike any other guitarist I've ever seen so I don't feel the strat has held you back!
I think your decision to pick up the Revstar is pure genius. A well thought out choice. However, when you play I don’t even pay attention to what type of guitar it is. You always sound like Chris Buck regardless of the guitar.
Ironically, that outro part was the coolest piece I've heard Chris play - and it was played on a strat... Perhaps because it was rougher, more hard rock oriented than most of his other work. Whatever it was, I think it sounded amazing. And frankly, the last thought coming to my mind would be, "I wish this was played on smth other than a strat".
Every single time... Every intro to your videos just blow me away. I can't think of anyone that can do what you do with the guitar. No unnecessary acrobatics. Incredibly expensive, sophisticated and absolutely absorbing.
You've got to follow what's calling to you, of course, but for whatever it's worth, I thought you had an **utterly** unique tone, feel, and approach on the Strat. That's actually what attracted me to your playing: I don't even especially like Strats, but you pulled sounds out of that guitar that I've never heard from a Stratocaster and didn't know they could produce. Everything else is just noise, of course, when the Angel knocks on your front door and shows you exactly where to go - but I, for one, feel that you're among the very top echelon of players who can lead the Strat *out* of its typecast blind alleys and get it singing in a striking new way.
I've just discovered Chris Buck, late to one hell of a party. Tbh doesn't matter what guitar you're playing, but when you make Danish Pete look average, then you know you're onto something!
@dannyplaysguitar not at all, Danish is utterly brilliant. Just I think Chris is even better in this clip, on another level fir me. His phrasing, timing, melody is just incredible. He is a mix of Derek Trucks meets BB King.
You've got such a rich history and you're still so young. Still developing. Ever expanding your musicality and expression. It's pretty damn great. You're an absolute joy to listen to.
What's so interesting, Chris, is that the development of the Buck is clear even without the clips of you playing. The confidence and polish with which you now articulate your views to camera is so cohesive and persuasive and, to use an old-fashioned word, wise. As for the sometimes discomforting fact of having videos exisiting in perpetuity, all I can say that is that it's been a real joy to me to bear witness to part of development of a fantastic and original musician . Finally, I'm sure that I will feel a shiver or two when you do get that Highway One back in front of the camera. Nostalgia? I dunno!
I follow a lot of rock and blues artists, being into that for over 50 years and I am sad to say I have not heard much if anything of Chris Buck. Well because of that video you spoke of coming across my TH-cam algorithm I have now. Liked and subscribed, I am happy to have found your channel.
That strat intro was so sweet and hypnotic. In contrast your bit with the band was a bit harsher and sharper. To bad there can't be the sweeter sound in a mix. But, as always your playing is exceptional and communicative. Understand the journey and the attention that other guitars get as you discover new nuances. You'll get back to the strat again. Just now now 🙃
I own a couple of Strats, my favorite one happens to be a hardtail. I also have 2 Les Paul’s, one with p90s and the other is a 57 reissue Custom 2 pickup. My playing has evolved over time and I’m more into jazz now, and my primary guitar is my PRS Hollowbody II. I’m fortunate enough to have options, and be able to pick the right tool for the job. Great video Chris, and I feel sorry for Greta Van Fleet, they were put in a box early on that they may not be able to get out of.
That makes perfect sense!! Awesome video Chris! As a fellow guitarist, when I see others play, I always naturally watch the left hand , but with you, I find I’m drawn to watching what you do with your right hand. You have such a developed technique - I’m mesmerised! I could watch you play for hours :) Awesome tone! 🤘😎🤘
Like others here, I love your playing. What I have noticed is that you do indeed have your own sound. You not only mastered the legacy idioms, but I have noticed you are in fact creating your own... 'licks' that I find myself messing with at times unconsciously... you're in my head sometimes, and it's cool :)
He’s just phenomenal isn’t he! My God. Is there a better contemporary guitarist? Well not to me. He’s Jeff Beck, Mark Knopfler, David Gilmour rolled into one yet unmistakably Chris Buck. A staggering talent.
Brilliant comments as always & totally spot on. Your sound is identifiable from style, feel and technique. I look at a pioneer like Adrian Belew, started on that battered Strat, but really found his own voice on his custom Parker Fly. It’s exciting to hear you break out the Yamaha and make a new path - yours. Can’t wait till you tour the USA. Cheers!!
Yes ... yes this makes so much sense but honestly Chris I think even if you picked up a ukulele I would know that it’s you playing it !!! You certainly have your own musical identity and I think it’s a beautiful one!
From the outside looking in perspective, I never felt like you were in a box. There was just enough hints of all your influences in your strat playing to appreciate the homage but so much originality that your sound prevailed
Really resonates. I’m nowhere near your league but the strat was my first, my primary for 20 years, and the instrument most of my heroes play. It’s been good to “shop around” in the past few years and a source of a lot of change/musical growth. Thanks for speaking so eloquently about it.
Brilliant reasons expressed for stepping away from the Strat to “find your own voice.” So very true. No one it seems can play a strat or an LP without immediately being labeled as a disciple of a small handful of players. It’s limiting. Your thoughts on this are so correct.
I really can’t think of anyone that sounds like you on any guitar and I can’t say I have ever thought you sounded like anyone else. That’s what makes you so amazingly fresh.
I know it's a year later but I just watched this video and totally understand where you are coming from. I have to give you Credit. For making the move. It makes perfect sense. You have definitely found yourself a unique and identifiable tone that is all yours and I love it.
Wise words from a great player. You truly have a beautiful and emotional way to play the instrument. Many draw inspiritation, just a few become one. ;-)
great episode, chris! more than one subject touched on, here, subjects near and dear to my heart and in my real life. kudos to you! you rock, and you rock.
I get what you say but then that applies to us mere mortals who are forever five steps behind our heroes. My humble opinion is that you're such a talent that you have carved your own niche on the Strat as on Write Another Day where they are Chris Buck recognisable solos not Strat solos. But whatever enthuses you and moves your playing forward is good no matter what.
I bought a Revstar because of Chris Buck. Also, no matter what guitar you play I can hear it’s distinctly you. So job done finding your own voice and style. I love that throaty tone you play. I find myself tuning my helix to what I want to hear, not somebody I want to sound like unless I want to match a cover tone. You do the same.
Rarely have I seen such Tone in the Hands & the Heart of a Guitarist . Whatever you have to do to pay the bills Stay safe & stay Frosty .. It's easy to say Be true to yourself But as I know all too well it is easy to be swayed by fair weather friends .. No such thing as Easy money .. whatever you do stay safe & stay Frosty. from an old Scot's Muso Recluse who has seen some of the best up close . Best wishes .
I`ll tell you Chris right now..You are Phenomenal Guitar player. I totally dig your style. You inspire me a lot. I`ve been Playing for 40 years and you completely blow me away. Keep up the videos. Keep on jammin. I love it.
Totally agree! That’s why I’ve been using kiesel headless guitars for the past few years and have really found a total different sound for myself. I grew up with strats and dire straits, Eric Johnson, Clapton and SRV and those kind of sounds are the first thing I play when I grab my strat. Or zep when I grab my les Paul. Even from the looks you kinda assume what kind of player a guy is when he is using a strat or les Paul. So playing a totally different guitar with a different sound has helped a lot with finding my own voice and style
I absolutely get it my dude. That’s exactly the reason why I fell in love with teles. The vast majority of huge tele players don’t play and don’t sound like I try to. That gives me a lot more options to develop “my thing” compared to a few years ago when I was only playing my strat. Cheers mate!
That earned a subscription. As a diehard Strat player, I'm finally convinced there is still actually a unique tone out there... Awesome video. Thanks from NZ. Kia ora.
I have never seen someone flip that pickup on the strat that much like flipping on and off the lights what a monster player! You're quickly becoming one of my all time favorite players. And yes I totally agree on finding your own voice amongst the legends and its sounding legendary keep it up man!
Fair enough. I'm a Strat guy so nearly took this personally, but a very honest and - yeah - personal video. The jam at the end is a killer. Great to hear you rock out.
I still love your Revstar and I feel it brings that "something extra" in your sound. By the way I loved the new Anderton's video on the new Revstars and I'm so sad that they still don't have a Chris Buck signature model. What a shame. God bless and take care Chris.
I had to break it to you Chris, but you’ve already got your own sound and style. Wether you’re on a strat, a Yamaha or even a BC Rich Ironbird🤣. Do what you do, do you. You’re a fucking beast. 👊🏻
Hey Chris, i just watched your solo from the youtube video entitled "Possibly the most beautiful guitar solo I've ever heard". Is there any chance you could do a tutorial to help a flailing guitarist pick up a few of the great licks and phrasing you laid down in that solo? Totally mesmerizing. I've been a big fan of yours ever since i first heard you a few months ago! Thanks for all your great guitar playing and your sharing nature to help others learn guitar!!
Very profound and enlightening dissertation. You mention aspects of familiar-sounding guitars as being possible over-influencers to one's own style, and I had never really thought about that. Great point, much food for thought here.
your path shows a great degree of maturity , in the end you could play a string attached to a 2x4 in a bucket and make it sound great, in listening to you over the years weather its on a Strat or LP or Yamaha you have always sounded like Chris Buck to me
Yeah man totally makes sense. You need your own tools to blaze your own trail. But now when I buy a Revstar people will say I'm trying to be Chris Buck

Just now now 🙃
That outro, just perfection
That solo is was fantastic and I always felt you stand on your own no matter what guitar you play.
Didn’t Greta Van Fleet put themselves in that box? Or let A&R people put them in that box?
Thoughtful piece Chris, I wondered where you were going with it
That makes perfect sense!!
A staggering talent.
sayce
I put a bit of Rory Gallagher in there too, for the rawness.
It's not a competition but Guthrie Govan is one of the world's best. Regret #9 is astounding. I love them both as guitarist.
That's funny
He definitely also takes some inspiration from John Mayer.
Great fretwork! That playing screams. Your music sounds great, but feels even better. Thanks brother!
Brilliant chops, instrument selection, fresh tonal perspective, and cracking philosophy mate
Chris- Your playing style sounds distinctive no matter what type of guitar your playing.
Funny thing is... the video posted of you with the strat was what got me hooked on your playing!!!° now I'm addicted!
Me too! I was hooked instantly!
I really can’t think of anyone that sounds like you on any guitar and I can’t say I have ever thought you sounded like anyone else. That’s what makes you so amazingly fresh.
Well thought out and well said! Thanks Chris it’s always a pleasure to hear you think out loud!
Well said Chris ...makes total sense what you're saying. Respect!
I know it's a year later but I just watched this video and totally understand where you are coming from. I have to give you Credit. For making the move. It makes perfect sense. You have definitely found yourself a unique and identifiable tone that is all yours and I love it.
For me, whatever guitar you are playin, you are Chris Buck.
But your reason about tone make sense
A great topic, my kid signed with Capitol and this topic resonates. Also that maybe the best outro yet Chris.
Wise words from a great player. You truly have a beautiful and emotional way to play the instrument. Many draw inspiritation, just a few become one. ;-)
This is really well said Chris, thank you. Saw you guys recently in Cork City, cheers
great episode, chris! more than one subject touched on, here, subjects near and dear to my heart and in my real life. kudos to you! you rock, and you rock.
Talent, class, and imagination.🏴☠🏴☠🏴☠🏴☠🏴☠
What an intelligent post! Thanks for that!
You are astonishingly articulate and thoughtful. Keep up the incredible work (both your playing and your presentation).
Wow! Great insight that I never really thought about! Love it!!!
Man you hit just the right amount of the right notes at the right time. I have to find some of your music.
I`ll tell you Chris right now..You are Phenomenal Guitar player. I totally dig your style. You inspire me a lot. I`ve been Playing for 40 years and you completely blow me away. Keep up the videos. Keep on jammin. I love it.
Man, your use of a revstar made me buy one. I love your playing. Looking forward to seeing you in April, i bought a swift blue Revstar. Killer colour
Great thoughtful valuably educational comments Chris. I shall think of this every time I pick up one of my 5 different guitars. Cheers.
Great work man!
I appreciate your honesty and understand why you chose to make the changes.
Perfect, cheers Chris
I absolutely get it my dude. That’s exactly the reason why I fell in love with teles. The vast majority of huge tele players don’t play and don’t sound like I try to. That gives me a lot more options to develop “my thing” compared to a few years ago when I was only playing my strat. Cheers mate!
Sweet baby gsus that opening jam was sick …god the chops
God damn that intro is amazing!!!
i'm assuming you hadnt heard the outro yet when you wrote that! Smokin!!!
@@cliffkennedy7883 hahahaha I hadn't 🤣🤣🤣 I nearly wrote a second comment
👍🏻🤟🏼🔥
Chris is good gonna sell a shed load of revstars. Deffo need a signature model
That’a the best Derek Trucks short of Derek Trucks. Awesome!
Oh. That outro! Beautifully controlled, choreographed, chaotic, violent, rock! The world needs more.
