What a loss.Btw,I'm spreading the word about Cardinal Black after being blown away by you at Royal Albert Hall with Peter Frampton.Have a wonderful Christmas with your family, cariad.
Glad you're feeling better Chris. I was lucky enough to see Stevie when I was a kid at Jazz Fest in New Orleans. Needless to say it was a seminal experience. Cheers and Merry Christmas!
He was not only a stellar musician, he was humble and praised everyone snd everything that got him to where he was. A true gentleman of the blues! …and Chris is no slouch.
Played one at this guy’s house when I was buying another guitar. It’s so worth the hype because it had THAT sound. Positions 2 and 4 sounded so crisp, it was just like the records
100% agree. I loved it thru the '90s and got one in 2005 and been my #1 since. I have 5 Strats and this is really my favorite. The tone is magic....pure magic. I would love to say it is all in my playing but....NO. The same way I love the Chris' paying in the jam at 4:11 but "THAT" tone just shines thru!
SRV's #1 tone was originally from the standard early 60's pickups wound with 42AWG HF wire around weak/soft A5 poles, a neck with (brighter sounding than Indian RW) Pau Ferro FB, and a high capacitance Radio Shack coil cable that gave the pickups a resonant peak in the ~2.5kHz range
Don't forget the 12" FB radius. Apparently Stevie's #1 has been refretted so many times, due no doubt to Stevie's very aggressive playing style, that the many resurfacings of the fretboard had flattened it down to 12".
Love the playing this week. You took the SRV tone and made it your own. I love how it brought a new dimension to your playing without sounding like you were copying. These solo pieces are when you really shine. Thanks
I love my SRV, strung up with 12s in Eb. I put Fender Pure Vintage 59 PUs for the exact reason you stated at the end. The guitar instantly had much more of the SRV scooped sound to it. Ended up throwing the Texas Specials in my MIM strat and they sound great in that guitar. Great revisit!
Agree. Needs lower output pups. The low output pups, then the tube screamer, then a black face on 6,6,6. My Eric Johnson sounds closer to nailing the sound than the SRV.
Merry Christmas Chris. Thank you for doing this video. SRV is our local Texas treasure. He lives within us Texans every single day. Your review of this guitar was very nice. And as usual, your playing spot on.
He was not just for the people of the Lone Star State. He was a treasure of the world,- a candidate for " World Heritage " status. Personally, I´m a Scandinavian / European metalhead with all that that entails. Been listening to Stevie´s playing since I was young. He was just that awesome.
@@ulfdanielsen6009 yes….obviously a world treasure….for all to love and admire. I often wonder how he would’ve evolved through time….if he were still with us. Cheers bro 🎸🤘❤️
@@What11235 I saw him twice, first in 83 at Rockefeller's, a small club in Houston, and again in 88 at the huge outdoor Concord Pavilion in California. The 83 show was mind-blowing, I almost couldn't believe what I was hearing. He wasn't famous outside Texas yet. The 88 show was mind-blowingly bad, took place during the zenith of his substance abuse period. He cleaned up less than a year later, and was sounding great on Family Style album. So tragic that he died right when he was about to come back strong.
The opening intro is cream. Wait, so is every other piece of guitarwork in here. The guitar and that perfect tone and your fingers seem to be a perfect combo. Be sure to click save on this one.
Fantastic video to revisit every now and then like so many others you have done, Chris. Sometimes I miss watching your old SRV Strat video from a few years back, as the intro was always a joy to listen to. For me, stumbling across that video when I was in an SRV phase was a wonderful introduction to your content and your playing.
Great demo once again . I'd only just listened to your SG demo and almost convinced myself to get one , then you do the SRV . Merry Christmas indeed ! 😉
Chris Buck has reached the level, where it doesnt matter, which guitar he is playing. So regardless which guitar he is playing, he just sounds like Chris Buck. :-)
Merry CHRIStmas! That's one sweet sounding axe. It embodies the traditional sound of the Stratocaster and your playing is exquisite. Thanks for all your posts over the years!
Happy holidays to you. Own a 2005, its a beast. Went thru Strat pluses, great guitars, cept for truss rod nut stripping. Some great G&Ls...but they wouldnt nail that Stevie thing, i was chasing at the time. A friend of mine owned a used instrument shop, and got one in....we plugged in, played, he's like, i thought these were just hype and marketing, but it just nails it. They're really nice guitars
This guitar really is special, bought mine in 1997 and its' been my number 1 ever since. I wasn't a huge Steve fan at the time, I just loved the gold hardware, Spaghetti Logo and sunburst finish. Mine is mostly yellow making it really bright. The left handed tremolo, IMHO is way more comfortable than the normal positioning.
Chris mate, I think you could string up a broom and make it sound beautiful. I actually had the pleasure of seeing Stevie twice, I’m an old guy born in the 50s but Guitar enthusiast, I don’t think anybody could duplicate his brand of feel when he was live just incredible. However you’re playing a second to nobody either! I love the way you work your cord progressions and just your style of play. Very unique. Thanks again for a great review. I can’t wait till Cardinal Black makes it stateside…Cheers
The SRV strat is amazing. A bit heavy, but I do love mine. If only to look at and get inspired because of the big S, R and V on the pickguard! It keeps reminding me that the guitar is the most amazing instrument there is. And for that alone it's well worth the money!
Have both the signature and the relic custom shop. Both great, but that custom shop has some serious mojo. Highly recommend if you get a shot. Just wish I could play like you. Merry Christmas 🎄
How comes I can't watch one of your videos without being impressed by your guitar playing? You got a really good sound. I hope that your playing inspires people to learn how to play a guitar and to learn to improvise and explore the world of musical notes
Hey Chris, nice playing as always. A high school friend has a first year production SRV signature special strat and don't know for sure but I suspect it is one of the brazilian rosewood board ones because there's something really special going on with the tone of that guitar. Tried several in later years and that mojo is not present.
Master Buck, take a bow . 1st class demo and you've sold me on an SRV strat. It's never gonna sound the same ( or SRV) with me playing it , but f... it . ASBO for annoying the neighbor's coming up.
Believe it or not I bought one of the Brazilian Rosewood models when they first came out. Very unfortunately I traded it in several years ago for an acoustic set up because my neighbors were complaining too much. That was painful for me. My dad has been upset about it too. So last week he bought me a No. 1 battered replica for my birthday. You will be able to see it hanging on my wall on my upcoming videos. It can't replace the signature series I had but I am deeply grateful to my Dad and I am excited to try to play like I did when I was a kid, but through a Helix or something. I could never be near your level of playing Chris but the joy of the thing is what its all about. Thanks for inspiring me!
I have owned lots of Strats, over the years. The SRV was near the top of my list of guitars I regret selling. Mine was one of the first year of production so I guess it is worth big bucks now... But I really liked having that left handed tremolo on there. It felt like I had more control, which is odd since I also used heavy strings. Great guitar!
Check out the Photos taken backstage at the Alpine Valley Gig with Stevie, Eric, Jimmy and everyone Else. Stevie's No1 definitely has a brand new rosewood neck ( Custom Shop?) on it, it looks identical to his signature model. I noticed straight away when it was published in a magazine back in the day, maybe Guitar World or Guitar Player.
I remember picking up an SRV strat in a guitar shop in the 90's and fell in love with it....unfortunately I couldn't afford it, and still can't justify the expense.....also I honestly couldn't deal with the pickguard, but you can hear SRV in every note on one. Fender really did nail this model.
Merry Xmas Chris ! All the best .If I had the cash I wouldn’t go for an SRV , if I could find one try I’d love a Robin Trower Strat , the Midnight Wine finish looks great and looking at the specs it should sound great -like the man himself . As mentioned by Chris the American Original 50s Strat from the first wave are superb , dunno what pickups are in there but just have a classic Strat tone !!
A sleeper signature Stratocaster is the Bonnie Raitt model. Mahogany body, blue or natural finish, gold hardware, and I don't know what pickups she had in them. It's a very poised instrument. Not as barky as SRV, not as quiet as the Jeff Beck, and very comfortable in the hands. I'm under the impression it suffered from being a "girl's" guitar, but I prefer these over the SRV, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, and virtually every other Fender Stratocaster I've come across. Bonnie is known for her slide playing, but I never saw that in this thing. The action was low, the strings were silky, and it could shred easily. The tone was such that shredders would struggle with one. It's a guitar for sustain and savoring notes rather than cascades of pentatonics. Like I said before: poised. The ones I've played have the unusual habit of curling in the lap like a cat or offset guitar. Maybe Bonnie was a stickler for the weight. Just the same, the feel of these things are like handling grandpa's old tools or using grandma's fine silver at the dinner table. Familiar, friendly, cozy, and it's admittedly strange to imply that of what is essentially a stock Stratocaster with some modest refinements.
Happy Christmas to you and yours also Chris and that is a terrific presentation as you always do ,been a fan of SRV since the mid 80s and that guitar sounds fantastic in your hands mate ,I hope you don't mind me asking a question about a separate issue ,you see I took the plunge and bought a set of your signature ID pickups from radio shop and I'm planning to put them in a 2009 American standard stratocaster in seinna burst but my question is are you using a standard 250k volume pot in your highway one strat and did you change the capacitor value from the standard capacitor I'd find in the wiring harness ,once again great presentation of the SRV strat and a great homage to the man himself
This was enjoyable, thanks for doing it! SRV was the one who got me into guitar when I saw him on TV, but I'd never buy that guitar. I think it's great for an option, and if people want those specs, but I'd rather forge my own path. So, worth the hype? Sure. Anything I'd be interested in as a huge SRV fan? Nope.
Played one. It felt vastly different than any Strat style offering at the time, until the Silver Sky came out. I’m a Tele guy, but some of the best SRV tones I’ve got came from a MusicMan Cutlass HSS (similar neck as well) and a 2016 Fender Roadhouse Strat. Both great prices.
