  • Who needs suicide or OHKO move spams on Mewtwo, when you can combine the most afflicting status, with the most broken attack in Pokémon Stadium...

So what is this Para-Wrap? It's the deadly Generation 1 combination of paralysis (Thunder Wave), combined with spamming a binding move (Wrap). A frustrating, but seriously OP strategy, especially if your opponent cannot switch out. Such as a 1-vs-1 situation, for example!
It should be noted that Wrap works differently in Gen 1. Despite being a binding move, it actually does not prevent your opponent from switching. Meaning, as long as you have surplus pokémon, you can escape it. In Pokémon Stadium, it actually cancels the user's Wrap, and can't be used on switch-ins. It can even bind Ghosts, despite being a Normal type move.
Wrap also doesn't do a set fraction of attritional damage like in later generations. It should also be noted the above works the same for other binding moves in Gen 1, such as Bind, Clamp, Constrict, and Fire Spin. These moves however, vary in accuracy.
So here it is: Dragonite vs. Mewtwo in Round 2 of Vs. Mewtwo, on Pokémon Stadium for the Nintendo 64. 1-vs-1. All stats and PP are maxed out for both Pokémon...
    Dragonite Mewtwo [Round 2]
HP: 385 Wrap HP: 415 Psychic
Att: 366 Hyper Beam Att: 318 Rest
Def: 288 Agility Def: 278 Thunderbolt
Spd: 258 Thunder Wave Spd: 358 Amnesia
    Spc: 298 Spc: 406
Thankfully for Dragonite, it no longer has to worry about Blizzard against Round 2 Mewtwo. Psychic poses a much lesser threat to Dragonite, even with Mewtwo's 400+ Special stat, and high critical-hit rate. Dragonite can easily tank a Psychic with near-300 Special in order to use Thunder Wave for paralysis, guaranteeing the Speed Advantage thereafter. All that's left now, is to spam Wrap repeatedly.
For Generation 1 only, Wrap stops the opponent from attacking if it slower. Hence where Thunder Wave comes in. As long as Wrap doesn't miss, Mewtwo can't do anything. While Wrap is a weak move, it makes up for it with Dragonite's monster 366 Attack. Landing a critical hit on the first Wrap, will replicate that damage by the number of successive turns it lasts for.
The only threat remaining now, is if Wrap misses. As long as Mewtwo doesn't reduce its Special, and/or land a critical hit, Dragonite should be able to tank two Psychics. There is however, a one-in-four chance of Mewtwo becoming fully paralyzed.
Another concern is if Mewtwo gets in an Amnesia to boost Special, but that would likely require Wrap to miss twice. Even if Mewtwo got in Rest to cure its paralysis, a simple Agility can regain the Speed advantage. As long as Dragonite is faster, Wrap will ensure that Mewtwo is trapped. You can see why this was altered in later Generations...
The all-powerful Mewtwo: defeated by the most OP trapping move in Gen 1.

It sure could dish out a beating to Mewtwo in the original card game too!

Wrap in generation 1 was so busted haha. Several things were. For example, a move with 100% accuracy might still miss because there's a 1/256 chance for it to miss in gen 1 for some reason. Using leech seed on someone who is suffering from toxic will cause the leech seed to do increasing damage (like toxic is intended to).
Also, this reminds me of my Pokemon Stadium 2 video where I use an Umbreon with the moveset: Toxic, Double Team, Moonlight (for healing) and Faint Attack. Toxic + double team is just OP, and with moonlight to heal, you can pretty much sweep any team as long as you get a decent set up (i.e. don't get killed before you double team).

Oh yeah! Toxi-Leech is another broken strat. Only problem is that switching out largely negates it.
I run an Umbreon with Pursuit, Charm, Toxic, and Rest. Charm just crushes any physical attack that otherwise threatens it. Rest over Moonlight simply because of status.
I like to Baton Pass Agility and/or Double Team onto it with Scizor. That's just my preference anyway...

Nice one mate thats a good way to do it. Does wrap have a 100% accuracy I don't think the 1 in 256 glitch is in stadium

Thanks! The 1/256 glitch is in the Kanto GB games only. As for accuracy, wrap was relatively inaccurate at 85%. It did get a bump up to 90% from Gen 5.
All the binding moves in Gen 1 were quite inaccurate. Wrap just happened to be the most accurate of the bunch.

Too bad they nerfed Thunder Wave's accuracy to 90 in Generation 7. They also nerfed every wrapping moves in Generation 2 since they were so broken.

    • @RetroVisionist
      @RetroVisionist  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yeah. Game Freak kinda had to nerf binding moves beyond Gen 1, thanks to scenarios like this. Agility could also break battles in a similar way.
Never played past Gen 5. Many moves end up getting nerfed to some extent eventually, due to additional moves, held items and abilities. So I'm not really surprised. Thunder Wave was such a staple of Pokémon Stadium's CPU battles too!
