Great episode. As a Native American I can say there are a lot of Indian cowboys and in fact a great NA author once wrote “Indians make the best cowboys” James Welch. Also I really agreed with Mike when he said elders would often give mis information to white authors I’ve noticed similar things within my Blackfeet culture. Two great story tellers thank you Shaun for providing them a space to share. Prison reform is a serious issue we need to address in our country. I could listen to Mr. Thompson all day! His intimate and very intricate descriptions of life in prison don’t just open your eyes, they blow your mind!! Absolutely fantastic video. Can I just say, the fact authorities have place so many restrictions on his life after 45yrs in jail is an absolute disgrace!! He has served his time and paid his dues!! Let him live in peace, the knowledge this man has will do so much good in the community, that locking him up again would without doubt harm many many people who would then be denied the opportunity to learn from this man’s wisdom! More power to ya brother!

I do respect what he has been through. Lord knows he probably is a badass. But, what I really respect is how he is working to change people's lives now. After being wrongfully convicted(in my opinion) and is still trying to help people. He just seems like a great person. I'd love to meet him. Or even just pass on a message. Either way. Please let him know that there are people out here who do look up to him and admire what he is doing.

The debriefing proces was very much in place when Michael Thompson in 1983 defected the AB. He was debrief from around September 14 by SSU agent James Hahn. Debriefing was the price Thompson paid to be sent to Unit 9-West, a special protective custody unit within Tehachapi's Restrictive Housing Unit primarily for AB informers (e.i. Ronald Harper, Steven Barnes, Thompson, Larry Jones and Rick Rose.) Thompson was in no hurry to disclose to Hahn everything he knew about the killing of Steven Barnes' father. A possible reason is that Thompson wanted immunity for his role in the killing before he spilled the full can of beans. Which in fact he got.

I'd seen both of these men do interviews on their own and thought to myself I'd really like to see these two guys talk. Well when I came across this podcast I was blown away, I just couldn't believe it. I must have watched this podcast 5 times because I enjoy it so much and the fact that S.A. is just letting them talk with out feeling he should be doing the direction of the conversation was very respectful. Great luck to both men. I can't wait for content from both men. Thank you very much, great job. ✊️.

Bring em back and let’s watch them conversing and filling in blanks and perspectives of whole stories.
On a side note; I first saw you and your brother Wildman pop up on here and watched all of them. He was a character and I and sure many others fell in love with the big brute. He’d keep ya busy and enjoying life. Sorry for his passing . Much love & subscribed to all brother. Good stuff from all of you. ✌🏽💯

I feel like I should comment my opinion for what if anything it's worth as there seems to be much confusion as to what it means to live your life following Native ways. I like Mike am a fellow traveler on the Red Road. Which means I follow the teachings of those that came before me, who also happen to be Natives. I do not know Mike personally I know nothing about his heritage or blood quantum but what i have to say today that does not matter in the least, as the Red Road doesn't have anything to do with either. First and foremost I who am a enrolled tribal member of a federally recognized tribe (also completely irrelevant but I say this for those in the comments who seem to be obsessed with such things) when I was a young man I was taught by elders much more knowledgeable than myself that this Red Road is not ours to own, just like the Earth itself is not ours to own. The Red Road, our ways, our teachings are open to all that wish to learn and follow them. We do not get to decide who is worthy, who is good enough or who is Native enough to practice this way of life. Your ancestry or who your parents are does not matter to any who follow the teachings of those who came before us. To any of those who disagree and say this is only for a select few I would ask who taught you? Does this sound like what those who came before us would have taught? Was the color of one's skin that important? Was Quanah Parker not Kiowa? Did he not live for his people? Was Ohiyesa not Lakota? Did he not love his people and help them as much as he could? Why do outsiders always seem to think they get to decide who is Native enough to live our ways? Our ways are not a religion, there is no Church. All of creation is our church. The Red Road is open to all that truly wish to walk upon it in a honorable way. This is not what I decided, this is not what I just made up. This is what I was taught by those who came before me. Just something for those who think it is their right to decide to think about.

I really enjoyed hearing these guy's stories and the similarities in their circumstances but the differences in their perspectives. Did anyone else get the feeling that John was gently trying to nudge Michael into a more explicit admittence that the AB gang was profoundly racist from it's inception or at least at the time of Michael joining it? Michael shrugs it off well but something tells me that if he were to admit to things the way John is framing it (a blantant racist gang to be avoided at all cost - he did after all) it would be a heavy burden for him seeing as he done what he thought was the best way to adapt and survive. With that said maybe John is just more naive and Michael's responses / views on the gang and who was who seems quite balanced, almost as if he was more immune to policticing than others even though he was deep in the mix. I don't know how Shaun was just pantiently listening until like an hour 1/2 in! Haha amazing podcast
