  • Spending time in the bush or at a game reserve is a special privilege that many South Africans seem to take for granted. For me, it's one of my "Happy Places" and I can never resist an opportunity.
To truly enjoy game drives though, you need the right vehicle for the job. A quick call to my friends at Toyota SA and what better than a Toyota Hilux Double Cab? The open "bak" was needed to transport cases plus all the food and drinks needed by 4 adults for 5 days of self-catering. The cab provides comfort and space for the occupants while spending many hours driving.
Speaking of hours behind the wheel, the 2.8 diesel provides 150kW and 500Nm through the 6 speed automatic transmission to the rear wheels only in this case. No 4 wheel drive but there is a diff-lock if you really need it. More important is the ground clearance and the easy cruising nature of the Hilux, pottering along at 30-40 km/h is just so easy.
Remembering the old advertising slogan from Toyota SA, every time we approached a junction in the game reserve I just kept GOING RIGHT and we found our best game sightings.
Raider spec means cloth seats that I found extremely comfortable, dual-zone climate control and infotainment screen that includes easily accessed Android Auto. It may not have all the advanced safety spec of the top Legend models but, as always, it's a case of your budget speaking.
Fuel consumption for the period was 9.4l/100km with under 9 showing on occasions when cruising on the open road, quite acceptable for a vehicle of this type and size.
Overall the Hilux proved to me once again why it's the top selling vehicle in SA month after month and year after year. I would prefer to have a few more USB ports in the cabin but that has to be the only complaint that I can possibly find in the test vehicle.
As tested the Raider 4x2 is priced at R688 300. This includes the 6 service/ 90 000km service plan.
