    "Board game Cafe" wish there was something like that here in my country. I got into boardgames through youtube, specifically Tabletop... Don't know why some people dislike Will Wheaton but the guy really exposes the hobby to the masses. We are years behind in Uruguay, the hobby is really underground and most people don't get it... "Boardgame Store"... "Board game Cafe"... someday... someday...

      Meh Will Wheaten and a number of other ppl like him 'explain' a board game and get rules wrong like all the time.
      Board Games are at times more complicated then ppl wanna believe, And board games can sometimes be predictible who won or lost way before the game is 'over' based off of random RNG BS this is a problem with Pen and Paper games like D&D, I have players that eather roll REALY f-in high or complete total BS, The rare rolls are the 'adverage' results, As such our adventures with him is randomly determined, He rolls like 16+ on his D20 and never gets lower or he rolls like 5 or less and never gets higher. Thus his results are 1,2,3,4,5 which normaly fail no matter what, or 16-17-18-19-20 which means half the time he crit hits with his weapons Its funny the first few times, But this is something that happens with the guy whenever we play D&D and its been like that for YEARS to the point we just roll our eyes him included and go I GOT A 12 ON MY DICE I DONT CARE ABOUT THE 5TH NAT 20 I GOT IN THE PAST 5 MINS coz battles just become one sided or he cant do shit in combat it depends on the day, One guy rolls nothing but SHIT one guy rolls nothing but AMAZING stats, Yeah sounds like a neat thing, And at first it is but after years of this? it becomes stupid for so many ppl.

    Great video. I was just at a wedding recently talking with a friend and they said specifically I've always wanted to learn more about board games. It was similar to what you were talking about. It was like they felt they needed an invitation. They didn't know about Tabletop video's, Dice Tower or anything to help them learn what the games are. Otherwise they are walking in to a store, look at boxes and having no idea what each one is. When the price to get involved averages $50 that is tough. So my wife and I have had a few friends over that are new to board games and have helped them learn what they like and where to find information on reviews. Super cool start to a series.

    I'm one of the people you're talking about who doesn't like board games. I hate when people ask me to play a board game with them. I can't be arsed learning the rules or laying out the pieces. I'm just not interested.
    Going to a comic store and seeing all the board games would give me decision paralysis and I'm not willing to research the ones in the store to find one I might like. Since I don't want to play when somebody invites me, and I don't want to spend my own time finding a game I like, I don't think I'll ever get into it.
    As an exception, I do enjoy some games, the ones like Taboo which are based on interpersonal communication rather than strategizing with tactical cards and places on a board. But even then I want the game to be very simple. I guess the barrier to entry is just too high for me to be interested in board games. I'm sure many of them are fun but I just always groan internally at the idea of trying them. "Please don't make me try this" and I'm sure that attitude would boggle some of you and might even upset some of you. I know I'm not being fair to the hobby but tbh I'm ok with that.

    This should be the main focus for brick and mortar. Doing what online retailers don't. Having knowledgeable, friendly staff who can teach people how to use their product without scaring them away. Also, places to actually have space to game for people self conscious about their one bedroom studio.

    Maybe board game cafe should start creating sections, either sorting by board game difficulty or type and then length. They could also have a menu with familiar games and then less known games that are comparable ie you like risk try small world, etc.

      Our Cafe doesn't but I think a lot do this. I know Snakes and Lattes does. They have a sticker system I believe. Green for easy to learn, yellow for medium, red for hard. And they have a sticker that represents "great for 2 players". Snakes and Lattes is pretty much always the level all other cafes should shoot for

      Most people want to relax. I noticed when you play board games you really have to focus & pay attention a whole lot if you want to do good in them. Also really hard to do when everyone is yapping always.
      Video games you don't even have this problem, & you don't have to focus as much. Also they don't yap for a long time. They are actually focused on the said video game.

    I think the big thing (going along on your Twilight Imperium message) is that people need to be shown specific games that are appropriately difficult (meaning easy-ish). I think a lot of my friends give board games a chance after playing some of the small box games that bring camping but they would have no idea where to get started by themselves. We are playing Unearth, Imhotep, Campy Creatures and possibly Mission Red Planet (likely two tables of gamers) today with a new board game group.

  • @TheDavidPhillips
    @TheDavidPhillips 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nicholas - I think you are right on point here. I feel the reason people need to have their hands held is that the hobby itself presents a significant barrier to entry - learning to play a game. Sitting and figuring out rules and gameplay on something you have never done is incredibly daunting - we don't really think about this because we are used to learning new games and understand the flow and progression of not only a rulebook, but games themselves, neither of which is always intuitive. Having a guide to hold your hand and teach you your first few gateway games is the only way to expose people to a world that, quite frankly, much of the world does not even realize exists.
    "You mean like Monopoly?" Sigh, no.... not like Monopoly.

    things you need to play video games: tv, console, time, money, done.
    board games: people who play with you, and you need to learn game rule before you play your game otherwise people who play with you lose interest really fast, space, and more space for your game collection, money, and more money for organizer to organize games, time, and more time for setting your game.
    despite all of this, i still love this hobby. it just..little hard to get into it.

    My biggest barrier to entry was my belief that the hobby would be full of a bunch of gatekeepers who would scoff at me for taking an interest. I remember being so scared to admit that all I'd really played in the beginning was Catan because I think I read some snotty comments about Catan online. Now that I'm fully immersed in the hobby, I realize that most board gamers would love to take a newbie by the hand and show them the way. At least I know I would; the more people I can convert into board gamers, the more people I'll have to play games with!

      I'm still a little nervous sometimes about going into a new-to-me game store, for fear of the potential anti-female attitudes - but to be honest, I've never encountered anyone being blatantly unpleasant (sadly, ... a pure-comic book store is a different experience...) Just the anticipation that there COULD be trouble is a big hurdle to overcome. I think that will continue to decrease, the more positive experiences women have and the more we share it on social media.

  • @JasonCookingham

    Thank you for the video.
    You touch on the reason I think more people don't play modern board games. Board games involve mental investment.
    Many people work hard on their jobs, and their idea of fun is not something that involves mental investment. That is why watching television is the use of free time.
    It also explains why Monopoly, Jenga, Game of Life, etc continue to be popular. People know the rules from their childhood, and they are not games that involve much mental investment in the first place.

    • @TheBrothersMurph
      @TheBrothersMurph  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is also very true. After a long day most people don't want a mental workout. But that's one of the things that I feel like most people don't know about the hobby. That there is such a massive variety in games in terms of metal strain. That's where simple little games are great. Where you're just like "Man I just can't think right now." cool, then play something super light. But a lot of people don't know about them. That's why people need to lead them. This is going to be the basis for one of the videos in this mini-series :) So I'm glad you brought it up!

    I had a co-worker that went to Snakes & Lattes, and said he played Jenga, Cards against Humanity, and one of the mass market games, Sorry I think.
    I said "why wouldn't you play some of the fantastic games that they have" he sort of shrugged. I said "You just went to an amazing steak house, and ordered chicken fingers".. lol.. But I know the reason he and his friends did that is exactly what you said, they had no idea what all those "Weird games" were. But with S&L, they have game gurus that would help them, I guess people are just too scared to try something new.

    At my office, we have some periods of down time. I've tried hard to get people to try board games, but everyone just flat out refuses. The most frustrating is that one lady asks "do I have to think? I don't want to think.."
    I don't even know how to respond to that.

    • @tonyp9313
      @tonyp9313 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's actually a great point that 1 lady made if she still works in your office, I give her a lot of credit. There's too much thinking when you play a lot of said board games. Too much thinking in these games when board games are supposed to be a way too relax & socialize with said friends.
      I see this with a lot of strategy games & even the more simplistic ones that are pure lucked based. They are contemplating for a good 20 min on what there next move should be before rolling the dice or playing their turn. I am like lets just get on with the damn game I only have a couple of hours before I have to leave.

    I misread the title and thought it said something like "Why you don't need more board games." I thought it was going that way when you talked about people playing jenga/monopoly, and the idea that as long as people have games that make them happy, they don't need the latest and greatest.
    Saying we need to bring more people into the hobby makes it sound like we're recruiting for a cult, haha.

  • @tonyp9313

    Board games are very limited. Yeah I was brought into the hobby when I was a kid. You actually need your said friends to get together at a said house to play. When I was a kid this was super easy. You would meet up on weekends. Now we all work. Our schedules are all different. So that means we can't all meet up on said weekends like I did when it was just a school schedule. That's 1 main problem. A 2nd one would be if you hardly play the games or you are introduced to a new board game, You are spending at least 1 hour or more to read up on the rules & then explain it to everyone. Usually you have like 2-3 hours. So depending on what you play, you might not even finish the board game.

    I do have one suggestion though. Its about your video volume. For the past few videos, I have noticed that your intro volume is way louder than your speaking part of the video. I’m not sure if that is something that can be adjusted. Maybe adding more volume to your voice. I know this is an older video but I thought my experience might help a bit.
    I was brought into board gaming by my tabletop RPG friends. It started as a way to fill time or spend the night if some players were missing. Eventually it took over a bit and we spent most game nights as "Board Game Night" instead of "RPG Night". I want to be clear that my friends are great, and I want to spend time with them whenever possible.
    Between all my RPG friends they have about 200 board games from 7 Wonders to Stone Age to Puerto Rico to Terra Mystica. They introduced me to these games, taught me how to play and strategize , etc.
    Now the part I know you don't want to hear: despite all this I have discovered that I actually really hate board games. I always feel empty and depressed after playing, although that holds especially true for Euro games that have little to no chance and are almost (if not 100%) strategy. Plenty of people would probably be quick to tell me to just get better at these games and I'll enjoy them more, but I know that isn't true as I have won many games against my friends and actually feel WORSE after winning than after losing. This has all come to a head recently (hence why I was looking up videos on board games).
    After an online board game night this week (5/26/202) my five friends and I played Puerto Rico, Tokaido and 7 wonders. I felt so depressed and unhappy after the session I couldn't get to sleep. I kept tossing and turning, wondering what was wrong with me that the very act of playing games like these made me want to break down and cry. I had a wonderful time chatting with my friends but the act of playing the board games sent me into a deep (though thankfully short-lived) depression. I am actually a very happy person, but board games send me to such a dark place I finally decided I simply cannot play them anymore... for my own health and well-being.
    So what is the point of this overly-long and rambling comment? "Please be careful with people who don't like the same hobby you do." I can't actually explain at all why board games make me feel so bad, but they do. I know there are others like me out there who love their friends and want to spend time with them but don't necessarily share in their hobbies or passions. It might not be that "they just haven't found the right game yet", it could very well be they honestly hate playing but don't want to hurt your feelings. Please allow them to be honest and LISTEN when they air their grievances. I plan on confronting my friends next week (and hopefully getting back into tabletop RPGs, something they mentioned they really missed doing) and being as honest as possible with them. I know my friends and I know they will understand, I simply ask that people such as yourself do the same.
    Thank you.

    Agree. I would add most people don't want to take the effort to read a rulebook. That's probably why people keep playing the "mass market games", because they already know how to play and can jump right in. With video/pc and now VR games people can jump right in. I think most people want instant. They don't want to take the investment to read rules, educate themselves on mechanisms, research modern games. For shame.

    • @kristak9699
      @kristak9699 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's why so many people need someone to show them. They don't know what's on the other side of reading that rulebook.
      On the other hand though, it only takes a little exposure to make someone willing to do that work you're talking about (read rules, educate themselves on mechanisms, research modern games). Once you've piggy-backed on someone else's knowledge to have a great experience, that work looks a lot less like work.

      I agree, learning the rules and reading rule books is not fun for a lot of people. Until you get into the hobby enough where you actually start to love learning new games. I(N) myself freaking LOOOVE reading rulebooks! But I didn't used to

      @kristak9699 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      William Andrews I see what you're saying. I was just speculating to myself about why I think Nick is right about needing an introduction.
      So I'd say, if someone doesn't want to read a rulebook initially, it's ignorance. They don't know why they'd want to play a board game, let alone read a rule book. But if they stay that way... fair enough if you want to call that laziness :)

    I do have a couple exceptions. I LOVE Taboo! On my kindle, I love TICKET TO RIDE.
    I want to have fun and not blow up or conquer the world like most games.
    I find games pointless and boring. We are talking about a red five here. I just can’t beyond the point of it being a red five. It is torture as I have to wait 20 minutes for other people to excited about a red 5.
    Taboo is challenging and fun as the others are involved. Some of my funniest memories were Taboo. I do have ATTENTION DEFICIT DISORDER. I don’t have the hyperactivity. But we are easily bored. I can’t get beyond it just being a red five. I don’t like violence. I have been a silent sufferer and not let people know how miserable I am. Ticket to ride is the only game I like
