  • Tour Scotland wee video of old photographs of New Deer, Scottish Gaelic: Achadh Reite, a village in Aberdeenshire, North East Scotland that lies in the valley of Deer. This Scottish village was founded after monks from Deer Abbey, Old Deer built a chapel at Auchreddie, which translates as " field of the bog myrtle ". Around 1507 the register of Deer Abbey lists its lands in the " new paroche of Deir ". The name Auchreddie has dropped in significance over the years, however the southern end of the village is still known by this name. In 1805 New Deer was extended to the north by the third James Ferguson of Pitfour, born 1735, died 1820, the elder brother of Patrick Ferguson who was a Scottish officer in the British Army, an early advocate of light infantry and the designer of the Ferguson rifle. He is best known for his service in the 1780 military campaign of Charles Cornwallis during the American Revolutionary War in the Carolinas.J. Murdoch Henderson, was born in New Deer on 31 March 1902, he was a Scottish fiddler, composer, and music critic. William Fordyce Mavor was born in New Deer on 1 August 1758 , he was a Scottish teacher, priest and compiler of educational books, many of which passed through numerous editions. He also invented a system of shorthand, which he explained in a treatise entitled Universal Stenography, first published in 1779.

    my great great grandmother's family is from New Deer and I wonder how many places in these pictures would be familiar to her. great series of photos you have here

    Pretty sure the pic with the lady walking down the hill is taken in nearby Maud. Near side corner is the hotel/pub and opposite across the road is the old post office?

      I used to live in my Grannie's house next to the white one the other side of the Steeny Brae. I think that your grannie's name was Henderson or Ogilvie. As a kid, I played with Michael Henderson.
