  • Clover plots are a great part of any food plot program. We now use chicory in all our clover plots for added attraction as well as nutrition. Chicory is drought tolerant and can grow in lower quality soils.

    John, I totally agree and have been adding approximately 30% Chicory to my Clover plots for over 20 yrs. with great results The main challenge I have encountered is killing the weeds in the Chicory/Clover mix plots. thanks, Bob

    Good stuff as always John. I appreciate the fact in all your videos you always talk about deer draw. Let’s face it we all want healthier soil but the main reason we do this is to harvest deer. Keep the videos coming !

      For sure.
      We all should want healthier soil.
      But my goal (and most others I would assume) is to attract and hold deer from September to January. Some folks want year round food.

    Great video John! I have 4 - 1/2 acre clover and chicory food plots on my 40 acre hunting property and the deer are on it all year. I also have 5 micro plots with brassica’s. I brush hog the clover plots in early June and late August when it flowers. 1 plot is 3 years old and 3 are 2 years old. All doing excellent!

      @northwoodswhitetailsfoodpl2663  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Jason
      We have planted it 3 ways.
      Frost seeded on prepped ground.
      Spring planted with oats as a nurse crop.
      Fall (August ) planting with rye and oats as a nurse crop.
      If frost seeded or spring planted, yes you may have to mow a time or two.
      Great question

      I would have said frost seeding

    Would it be a good fall plot?

    • @northwoodswhitetailsfoodpl2663
      @northwoodswhitetailsfoodpl2663  ปีที่แล้ว

      We are doing it in combination with a strip of grains as well as strips of other perennials. We are doing a pure chicory plot because it’s more sandy soil and I can’t get brassica to grow well yet.
      A stand alone chicory kill plot may work well. But I do like a clover component with it.
      You can plant spring or late July.

      @D Mouse Absolutely. With chicory I use .5 oz imox 1 oz oil.
      I usually try to use a liquid fertilizer the day before. You can simply mix 1 lbs package of miracle gro to 4 or 5 gallons of water spray the vegetation. 24 hrs later use the herbicide mix above. A 2 or 3 gallon pump sprayer works. Use long sleeves and rubber gloves. And a mask.
