  • Rebuild is finally complete!
What started out as a face lift with a few repairs turned out to be a 100% rebuild with a brand new custom finish which eventually led to a brand new Mercury 150 Pro XS 4 stroke.
Very happy and thankful to Timmy Louw for how this came out, boat is an absolute dream rig. Many Thanks to Ivan Terblanche at Sunset boats and Francois Human at Rutherford Marine for their excellent responsive service regarding Mercury.
Couple of pictures below with a complete walk around of the entire rig and a scenic edit on the Gamtoos river after the walk around.
Entire rebuild progress can be viewed on these links below:

TIDAL HOOK : As a writer , I am used to spelling mistakes , and what an error can easily indicate , is that there is emotion attached : " In the case of a writer , it is said the muse is running high " :
I consider that there was a lot attached to this boat project for you , especially seeing as how company restoration was a swindle !
" YOU TOOK ON A TASK AND YOU WON , YOU AND TIMMY ! AND THAT IS SOMETHING TO BE REALLY PROUD OF ! "
    Viz.
Yea quite a big job but there has been very good progress made so far, and yes going with everything for the long term because I dont want to touch this boat again, I want to get out of the ''a boat is a hole you through all your money into'' mentality by always adding little things when I get to the boat.
Moving on, panel artwork is coming along, I will collect it in LA early in April.
Will look similar to the one posted below, I have also received the eva teak foam which I will post tomorrow along with the jockey wheel which I picked up last week.

Thanks man! I was very blessed and privileged to have Timmy take on this project, I merely came up with the designs and such, his execution is what made the difference.

I am on record for saying that yourself and another gentleman have both restored such boats ,
And your revelations in the regard have offered the entire world a look into boating that otherwise would not have been necesseraly afforded ,
It is an eyeopener second to none .
And for people like myself , we would not have been in the position that we are now to make decisions , no longer uninformed decisions , but rather decisions with foregoing knowledge , prior to purchasing a second hand or used boat ,
And knowing that fitment practices on and even construction materials of new boats are flawed in many cases ,
And have a disastrous effect .
No one can thank you or the other gentlemen for your efforts ,
As there is no payment that will suffice .
The two of you and your friends and family that were involved ,
And the airing of the facts on media ,
Have changed the game completely !
I can safely say that that sturdy , good river boats , are :
      1 . The Interceptor 186
      2 . The Calibre 185
And I would consider no other river cabin boats that to offer the same peace of mind , and pleasure of usage .
That has become possible due the media that you and the other gentlemen have made available .
THE BUDGET IS NOT SMALL FOR MOST , BUT THE REALITY OF IT IS BETWEEN 130 to +- 300k ZAR ,
and that is not comfortable for many a aspiring boater !
The above projection includes a new boat motor .
I had mostly the correct ideas about what constitutes a proper boating setup :
And my ideas have not been altered ,
But rather strengthened due to your and the other gentleman's assistance .
I have communicated with the other gentleman fairly extensively ,
And he has patiently assisted me with in depth information ,
And went the extra mile ,
And that has made the difference , along with both his and your media display and information .
      Have a great weekend ...
      JAH BLESS ...

Wow, great job and love the attention to detail. Did you buy the Fulton F2 winch locally in South Africa? I’ve seen them on Amazon for good prices, but prefer to buy locally if the price is decent.

    This is just inspiring though.

I have been absolutely dying to know where the launch site is where you launched your 186 at Gamtoos
I am dying to know ?

I launch at a private residential slipway at the Gamtoos river.

That slipway looked really good .
I still don't have a boat , but that will materialize , and when it does ,
Obviously I would want to launch at that slipway lol ...
The boat I will look at at the appropriate time will be a Flamingo 180 ,
They seem really stable on the water .
I would also try to have a trailer similar to yours .
You are a big help ...
      THANK YOU ...

    In you opinion ,
Would a 1.6 Polo Vivo be safe and adequate to tow ( Including long national road trips ) ,
launch and retrieve an Interceptor 186 ?

Hey Andrew, I wont advise that, dont think that will be legal either.

What vehicle was used in this video to tow the boat down to the river ?
And would you use such a vehicle to tow the boat in general from city to city etc meaning on the national road ... ?
I am interested in what vehicle is adequate for towing a Interceptor 186 safely ...
Slipways , steepness and launching in relation to the vehicles towing capacity and power , is also a concern of mine ...
I would be very happy to learn from your experience ,
    Please ,
    And Thank You ...

      Andrew Lines
      Hi Andrew
In the video i had a Nissan NP300 which worked pretty well, no major complaints.
You could easily and safely use it for towing around no problem.
It does not have a hell of a lot of power for retrieving so some slipways will be more difficult then others. All depends what the load on 186 will be in terms of motor and trailer design.
I currently have a YD25 Nissan Navara which works very well compared to the NP300.

I see you are using 2.5L and 3.0L bakkies ?
In you opinion , would a 1.6 Polo Vivo be safe and adequate to tow ( Including long national road trips ) , launch and retrieve an Interceptor 186 ?

Hi Andrew. I would not advise pulling it with a polo. I had a baronet 17ft i towed with a 1.6 corsa utility. What an absolute nightmare. Could not even get it up the slipway. Upgraded to isuzu 3l and problem solved. Hope this info helps.

Yea I worked that out after lots of Q&A
      MUCH OBLIGED ...
I also worked out that a proper cabin boat is a Flamingo 180
I am not partial to a Flamingo 170
