- Hello there! I’m MtPain27, and this is Dean of Doom, the show where we give grades to classic and contemporary Doom wads. Why? Because ranking things is fun. Today’s episode will be a Doomkid double feature dedicated to Ray Mohawk’s Manic Monday and Ray Mohawk 2: Ray Wreaks Havoc! Environmentally conscious lad that he is, Doomkid recycled the format he patented with the Rowdy Rudy duology, designing the entirety of Ray 1 himself, and exploiting the community for the sequel in the hopes of nabbing another Cacoward for himself. We’re onto you, Doomkid! Considerably humbler and more relaxed than the first Rowdy Rudy, 2019’s Manic Monday is a six-map weekend vacation inspired by DK’s love of 90s maps and the Australian seaside. The world was not ready when Ray Mohawk 2 hit Doomworld shelves in 2021: allegedly spurred on by comments made on this very show, Doomkid locked himself in his DehackED laboratory and cooked up one of the most stupidly overpowered arsenals in vanilla Doom history for Ray to wreak havoc with. Ray’s sequel preserves the original’s easygoing vibe while cranking up the carnage to levels previously unseen in Doomkid’s body of work, so grab your surfboards and your bongs folks. We’re going on a ride.

My brain when I saw this video.
Here it is, I've been looking forward to it since I saw the grass skirt in the season trailer!
After witnessing Ray Mohawk's and (especially) Rowdy Rudy 2's ending, I knew Ray Mohawk 2 had to be spared from the same fate. At the same time, I fully expected many contributors to surpass me in both visual and gameplay department, so I just focused on my strengths and made sure it's quirky and as memorable as possible. It's already a time-honored tradition for megawads' penultimate maps to be the hardest ones, anyway.
Who would've thought that one little comment on UAC Rebellion would've proven so inspiring in the long run... my taste in WADs doesn't even overlap with Doomkid's that much, I feel. And yet, it seems we do have some fundamental things in common.

This wad is my favorite of all time, not just for its laid back yet explosive action, but for its celebration of crunchy detailing and various mapping styles. It's an encapsulation of what makes this game and its community great; irreverent, swashbuckling personality, and unparalleled freneticism. What a joy to experience.

Any fan of obscure 70's prog rock will probably recognize the MIDI in RM2's map 22. It's a midified version of the song Hocus Pocus by the Dutch band Focus.
I like the fact that TH-cam recognized the game as "DeHackEd", instead of "Doom". Since it's one of the strongest parts in Doomkid's wads, including these two. Welcome back!

I've never played anything made by Doomkid, but I always watch his tutorial videos if I need to do something for Doom mapping. It's especially important now since I'm participating in a couple of community projects and I basically had to restudy how to make Doom maps (half a year ago I made a comment about starting making full-blown megawad, I must have been under something to make such a bold statement). Tell you what, I'm knee-deep in mapmaking now and I'm happy to bring something fun for the community.

You've come back just at the right time. I've been having problems with my stomach lately (Nothing to serious, but it still sucks), and have to drink the most vile and disgusting liquid-medicine ever conceived on mother earths green surface, that makes even the purple goo in Doom eternal look appetizing and slightly less infuriating by comparison TWO TIMES A DAY. You're videos really are a mood saver, MtPain.
Sorry you weren't super into map08. I was going for something inspired by the factory from Doom 2 but with harder combat. I personally like the hell noble room, but I'm a biased first party. I made the map in a few days after wracking my brain trying to figure out how to make something interesting using the new weapons. Want to return to that sort of layout for a future map sometime.
I always thought of it as a sort of "1/3rd of the way mini-bossmap" type thing, and really enjoyed it. After you considering dropping out of the project initially, it felt like a pleasant surprise to get such an optimized (but not to the point of pain) map!
Honestly, Egg Boy, I feel the project would've been missing something without your contribution! It was fighty, thoughtful and exciting, punchy and concise. Personally, after the first time, I actually really enjoyed the Christmas beef Barons! Carving out a bloody patch to hold out and escape was great fun! I think it's a much more concise map 4, which trades room for intensity.
The factory is an interesting reference, though now I think about it, the Baron room is inspired by the Caco room?
IMO, your map was a great injection of challenge early on that broke up the pace a bit. I loved it. ❤

My god, it's all so clear now. Creating Dean of DOOM and growing it was all just a ploy by MtPain to spread DoomKid's maps to a wider audience! Delightfully devilish, Dean.

I'm so glad I played along with the DWMegawad club for this one, this WAD was fantastic. I would like to note that MAP14's Cyberdemon slime pit fight is a lot easier if you know to grab the rad suit to the right of the door, but I went through a lot of frustration before I figured that out.
Playing through this now. As always, love the recommendations. If we are on the topic of semi-conversions, would Spaceballs be next?

And in in the spirit of fair play, The Dean let's the F stick, and gives it the dunce cap for e2. That way, he's not being explicitly self-depricating, and everyone loves a Delinquent appearance.

I know Doomkid has a soft spot for 60's Psych Rock, but hearing Hocus Pocus by Focus in map 22 made me laugh more than I expected! If you're unfamiliar with it, you ought to go check out the live video, it's incredible. There's yodeling!

Fun ep! Loved the gentle Doomkid ribbing in the beginning. Man, I really need to revisit this one. I hit Doom fatigue for a bit after finishing Good Clean Coal, and never went back to finish it. I did enjoy what I played of it. I'm currently playing through Jamal Jones tho, and that's been super fun (nice map btw).
Also, R.E.M. are one of my favorite bands, and "Shiny Happy People" is one of my least favorite songs by them, lol. I think I prefer this MIDI version more, lol. I'm just glad to see a R.E.M. MIDI in the first place!

An interesting pair of wads and I really enjoyed playing them for the DWMC. It is interesting to see your opinion differs from mine on quite a few of the maps (I really liked poster boy of mayhem for example). I kind of get the feeling that this is down more to the major dehacked changes and how it effect the gameplay. It is great to see you back though.
Also mandatory and relevant pun - There was very much a “Lose yourself to dunce” moment.

Hulu Imp is the greatest thing I never knew I needed
I didn't find any one mentioning this in the comments so I'll say something. I cracked the code for the cyberdemon fight in map 14. Grab the BFG and hop off the walkway to the right. There should be a berserk pack and rad suit there. There are steps in the walls of the walkway and platforms to get out of the ooze.
In case you're not familiar, Map 21's midi comes from Deltarune's first chapter :)
It's a good thing that Silverminer stepped up his game this time after that trollish Plutoina 3.. I remember the BS level design and the very square Blocky design..
BTW if you're planning for another sawed off wad episode, I made a small wad called Alice Clancy's Shattered dimension.. it features Doomgirl this time it's a 9 level with a deathmatch bonus at the end.. with a little tweak with the doom engine.. it's a little fun game and a little easier than GMP..
There's some high level-humor in the blaster; the idea of making a stormtrooper rifle into a rapid fire shotgun so it always misses it's target a *little* is hilarious.

thats a nice refresher from all-canon (yes) doomguy various missions. i'm still not yet ready to jump into playing such highly modified wads, but kudos for doomkid for his laidback approach. just like his videos!
What a wonderful pair of wads. Ray Mohawk 2 really pushes Doom into "arcade shmup territory" and I think it works really well. Also I see what you did there in Patreon credits, he deserves it.

I'm almost done with this great wad and boi what a ride it was. Funnily enough, in Pier Pressure, I just ran to the red key and back without firing a single shot to escape that double cybie fight. Smartest doom tactic I've stumbled onto in recent times hehe.

Great episode! I played through both Ray Mohawk WADs a couple of weeks back and had a lot of fun with them, especially RM2.
For my money, Beautiful Clean Coal is my favorite DK map and the first one of the set that properly kicked my ass. From the moment the title appears in the intermission screen I was hooked.
One final note, if I never hear Shiny Happy People again it'll be too soon. A stint in retail absolutely ruined the song for me.

I hope you do more wads with gameplay modifications/dehacked in the future. I like the variety, vanilla stuff tends to blurr together after a while unless its got a very unique aesthetic/premise.

This is one of the best wads ever made.
I think I prefer Rowdy Rudy over Ray Mohawk, especially when it comes to their sequels. RR2 feels smoother with its difficulty curve, while RM2 starts as a power fantasy with OP guns, only to get frustratingly hard in its final fourth. I think it boils down to limited changes to its bestiary - all but two are unchanged from Doom 2. The main exception, and the reason for the bulk of my deaths in later maps, is a cyberdemon, whose projectiles are much harder to dodge and feel more powerful (but that might be a placebo effect). And when you can mow down anything with auto shotgun or chaingun, throwing souped-up cyberdemons at the player feels like the only way to make a map challenging.
Oooh this looks like a fun set. Might give it a go after Inception II, which is pretty great so far. Though map 6 was kicking my butt pretty hard.
Interception II is very good, but pretty demanding. I hope to cover it here someday!
