+The Drunken Coward Once I got drunk and got into a train and ended up in another city. The night was kind of a blur but I ended up back in my home city by the time the trains stop running and I had no money to get on multiple trains lol.

Plot twist: Terraria introduced the kid on the train to youtube, and that introduced him to vinesauce which introduced him to Joel. The kid's like 20 now chain watching these videos smoking weed and dying, the raging whiny days are over. That's when he comes across this video and every description of the train rings a bell in him and he remember's Joel's sleepless ass, long hair, being the only one getting off the train into the cold, already miserable. About to have to survive another night without sleep. Then the kid has an identity crisis, reinstates his manic depression, and causes a meltdown that ends up getting him fired from whatever job he may have at the time. Karma. Amirite.
What the fuck was the cop thinking when he threatened Joel with a jail cell? He has no say whether he can sleep in a McDonald's, it's property owned by a business and he already had permission.

I once worked in Sweden at a venue where we served food and alcohol to large amounts of people and we'd often get cops casually coming through to deal with any troublemakers and in exchange they usually get free coffee. Y'know, cops are supposed to show themselves and hang out amongst everyone else, not just hide in their cruisers 24/7 like they do in some places.
So it never occurred to Joel to ask the McDonalds people if they had a phone he could use, to call for a friend or his mom to come pick his stranded ass up? Of course, that may have not been an option, either. But this is essentially why I'd really rather not travel much, especially not alone.
A little late but, honestly? I'm one of those who only knows my own number, I used to know a few wired phone numbers but no one in Sweden has those in their house anymore and the mobile phone numbers are just too damn long to memorize. Could be that Joel doesn't know any numbers by memory

wow atleast he was allowed to sit in a mcdonalds all night, where i live the lobby closes at 1am and you arent even allowed in there unless you are a paying customer. Back in my dark days iv spent many upon many nights outside trying to sleep or stay warm in the Canadian winter. Being homeless is absolutly awfull and im so happy that i have a bed to sleep in now. Even the thought of those nights gives me a shiver down my spine.

i've actually been in many similar situations....but i find that so long you explain your whole situation and be cool, peopel generally help you out. I've got free nights in hotels and meals before. I paid them back out of courtesy later on, though.

Freezing cold, pitch black outside, stuck in a town centre... The bus is 1hr30mins late, no coat or anything except my school uniform and other people... My phone is dead... I ask somebody for the time... It's 5:30PM. I start walking, and the way I have to go makes me walk alongside an A road and a canal... For about 40 minutes I walk... Until I notice that my Dad has been searching for me ever since he got home... How do I notice? I walk down the main road near my house for a bit and I see him in a panic. When he saw me, my freaking God. That night, all I had to eat was a plate of chips from the chip shop, since I was so hungry, but I didn't have any appetite... And I couldn't sleep when I went to bed... Worst day of my life right there.
