    Over here in south Germany August it's a problematic month because it's hot. My (beloved) wife decided to play badminton on a hot day on my lawn😢 two days of a angry man😅 today I try to seed pre-germinated grass-seed and add some water during the day (30 degrees) I hope it will be fine next week. Thumbs up for your garden, I like the plants growing and I remember a old sentence : the most work in the garden will be the lawn. Greetings from Germany ❤

    Thankyou this video is fascinating and clearly explained. It’s perfect for my third season of gardening. I recently became interested in learning about the names of grasses and plants after replacing a lawn with meadowmat turf, so this information is exactly what I needed moving forward. 👍✌️

    I changed to bent/fescue on my back lawn a year ago. Not looked back - huge difference. It doesn’t get a lot of Sun in the winter and rye grass kept dying. The other one thing I’ve found with bent/fescue is that after you scarify it, you don’t need to add seed…it just fills in all on its own

    • @NoviceGardener
      @NoviceGardener  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've heard a few people who have gone with bent/fescue say the same. I'm looking forward to seeing how it gets on this winter! If I had a huge garden, I think I could have got away with rye through winter, but the lack of sun my back garden gets just makes rye futile.
      Picking up a new scarifier in a few weeks. Only going to be using it on the turfed area this year with it being quite thick. But like you said, it fills in itself.

      @@NoviceGardener scarifier attachment to your allett? I thought verticutting attachment would have been the best one to get?

    • @NoviceGardener

      Not sure I'm going to pick up the scarifier attachment. Have considered the verticutter as they both do a similar job, with the verticutter making more sense for what it's used for.

    You must be chuffed with the bottom lawn. It looks fantastic. It's a great feeling putting in a lot of hard work and dedication to get such results. I'm so happy (after many attempts) with my lawn which i think is a rye/fescue mix. Look forward to see what happens in the winter. Never thought about conditioning the soil. Very interesting. I like many others put down many products every month or so. Food for thought. Thanks for all your videos keep it coming

      I put loads down on the lawn last year when it was rye grass, but I feel like I've not done half as much this year! Didn't know it could be this easy to be honest 😅
      There's lots more to learn, but hoping to keep improving the lawns year on year!

    Impressive. I'd be interested to learn exactly how you changed grass species because our lawn (long story) was freshly seeded a few years ago but looks awful and has more invasive leafy plants/weeds throughout than grass unfortunately!

    • @NoviceGardener
      @NoviceGardener  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I killed the space off and seeded it from scratch. Rye can grow quite tall and can often overshadow new seedling, especially fescues and bents with them having longer germination periods

    I have tried with Fecues and my front garden suffers badly with disease. So decided to reset and apply Rye grass. Personally have no issue twice a year top sedding and dressing as i do enjoy it.

    • @NoviceGardener
      @NoviceGardener  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Whatever suits the space best is definitely the right choice. Rye grass seems to thrive at the front where the lawns can drain better and where they get more sun.

      Loads of others use rye. TheReelmowingclub is one off the top of my head. I use a lot of Daniels methods. If you enjoy the process of overseeding once or twice a year, as a lot of people do, still think it’s the way to go. Bent/fescue just does not have the colour, almost seems a bit of a waste of good fertiliser. Also I just never see any disease, as the soil can breathe. But if overseeding is a pain, then definitely bent/fescue the way to go

      To be honest, rye and bent/fescue are both great when done well and I guess a lot of it is lawn dependent. With the space I've got in the back garden with the lack of sun, rye just doesn't cut it through winter. But the lawns at the front are rye and they thrive through winter. They look just as good in January!

    • @philgornall
      @philgornall 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@NoviceGardener yeah absolutely. I get why your lawn at the top would be no good for rye against all that shade. Surprised it didn’t do so well in the one at the bottom. I have about 1/4 of my lawn in permanent shade all year round from the conservatory, and whilst it does thin more than the rest of the lawn over winter, it’s not bad at all if keeping up with overseeding. Though I am about 80% rye 20% fescue. Seems unfair people always just say ‘rye lawns’, when a lot of off the shelf seed mixed are rye/fescue which helps with the thinning.

      It's Lawn Association's 40/60 bent/fescue mix (luxury natural lawn mix). It's a bit pricy for how much you get, but it means you shouldn't need to over seed moving forward

    • @NoviceGardener
      @NoviceGardener  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You can do, but with how fast and tall rye grass grows, it can often stop lots of bent and fescue seeds germinating (particularly the bent seeds with them being so small). But it's possible, just tricky.

    I really dislike stripes on my fescue bent lawn. They look messy when looking from the side so I mow in one direction lol. True grass is just repackage terralift TX10 but at 2.5 times the cost. I got a 20 kg bag for £80 (delivery was £23 as I live far away)

    interesting to see how much it does suffer over the winter. you can bet your house it wont be any where near the damage of the rye grass. But all grass can struggle over bad winters. I think next year when you start verticutting and adding high nitrogen and iron to the lawn it will be popping on another level, lol

    • @NoviceGardener
      @NoviceGardener  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's true, there'll still be some die back. It hardly gets any sun through winter so it's not ideal for grass! 😅 Looking forward to how it will be looking through next year though

      @@NoviceGardener well your a little more experienced then me but I can tell you from my experience that fescues do not like soggy soil actually rye tolerates it more. Fescue will tolerate shade well but not wet shade. I say this as I have an area on my lawn that is soggy shade so be tried improving drilling out hodge holes with a large auger bit, which has helped a lot. But I’ve seeded numerous times there and only grass that seemed to be there at present is rye and poa. Yet The seed mix I use is like 70% fescue. atleast you added a French drain and improved the drainage a lot, you done all you can really. I think most gardens do not get much sun in the winter as the sun is barely seen in the uk 😆. I’ve been polishing a turd the last 2 years with my lawn. I think killing it off and starting over would have been better for me. But with the effort I’ve put into improving it bit by bit I think I’ll just keep doing what I’m doing as i am Improving it. It’s looking better then last year and I think next year it look better then this and so on. I bought a little ph soil tester and mine was low at 5.2 as an average so I added lime and will lime again once I aerate in the autumn time. I keep forking out the poa and weed grasses I see. I just keep plodding on with it before I give in to the nuke approach.

    Hi mate. Rather than kill off the rye grass, can you just start adding fescue during seeding and top dressing?

    • @NoviceGardener
      @NoviceGardener  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You can, but rye can leave the new seedlings in a lot of shade with how fast and tall it grows. It's possible, don't get me wrong, but results may vary.
