    Thank you for also showing the other side of the door. I've seen a video like that a year back, and couldn't wrap my head around HOW that works.
    Yes i know, if i ever need this, i won't see the other side. But having seen it in action once might help understanding whats supposed to happen.

      And seeing how it works also helps you work out how to improvise a home made version in an emergency. Looks like a wire coat hanger and piece of string would do if you were desperate.

    • @ROCKSTARGUY141
      @ROCKSTARGUY141 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      you don't even need the string. if you loop the top of the hanger , it slides right on, and then you just pull the end sticking through the bottom to unlock the door. i actually made a permanent one for my dorm room a few years back so i didn't have to carry a key, and could just reach under the door to unlock it

    I watched a bunch of videos about this tool last night. I just saw yours. It's the best. Thank you!
    This is a perfect tool to use in my apartment building. People are paying $100 and $200+ to locksmiths (some of whom can't get in). This tool requires dexterity, not picking talent; no locks to damage; easy peasy. Awesome. : )

    Bought this a few weeks ago- can't tell you the fun I've had exploring. Sparrow REALLY puts out quality products- everything I've bought from them, be it picks or shims, has been nothing but exceptional. You can really 'feel' the craftsmanship they put into their stuff.

      thechosendude That makes 2 of us. I've even seen it in the comment sections get to the point where people actually get somewhat mad about it & even start whining, crying, & act like they're 6! All over something so trivial. I would venture to say that it's because of A) His career & what he has access to, B) Doesn't care to have unknown people bothering him & family out at restaurants, airports, etc... or C) Doesn't want to possibly deal with some whack job nutcase TH-cam stalker! Plus I can't say that I blame him.

      I have found some levers to be a bit tricky to fully retract without slipping off. In these cases it's handy to slide a shim in when you get the handle partially turned. I've used the benjim version.

    That's awesome information. I never realized that type of handle is often dictacted by code for commercial applications, and I'm a security officer at a huge manufacturing plant. I go through these doors probably a hundred times a night. I'll have to start paying attention to which doors have handles and which have knobs out of curiosity, based on your statement I expect to find doors that would need to be used to exit in an emergency to have handles. I've often noticed we have both but never realized why. They all use Best locks, and I usually just stick my GM key in and go through without giving it a second thought.
    I'd say 90% of our locks have keyways on both sides though, so this method wouldn't work. Being such an old building though I've noticed that the vast majority of doors have poor tolerances on the frame so a shove-it tool would work in a pinch. Having a GM key is nice though :).

    Some brands of lever handles have extended the the end of the handle so that it is much closer to the door. Specifically to make doing this a lot more of a pain. Had to modify mine a little to make overcoming them easier. The last one was a restricted keyway IC core Sargent. Didn't even bother trying to pick it. 😁

      I know he has said in previous videos he works for the feds. Not having people be able to spot you in public and know who you are and what you do is important. I'm sure he doesn't just serve coffee with his skills either, he probably has access to sensitive information. There are obvious safety and security concerns that could come up, and his face isn't important to picking locks anyway.

    +Bosnianbill .Fantastic Video Bill & Very Nice how you hid behind the door. LOL. I had to help a friend of mine who owns a very big Hotel with a Magnetic Card Lock System that when the batteries run out you couldn't get into the room and that included the owner as well so what I did was got him a U.D.T. So they could Open the Doors but before they used to have to drill the door open and that was extremely expensive as you can imagine. He was shocked at how easy it was to use the U.D.T. and that it even existed so Thank You Sparrows for such great products. Very Funny With The Old Balls Joke As Well. Keep up the great work. Nick.

    Not only the elderly, Bill. Assistance animals can open them as well! I'm not sure if you're familiar with a British show called QI...they did a whole mini segment on door handles in an episode last season, Vancouver has outright banned the door knob. There's even a society that exists to keep the door knob for situations like historical buildings with antique fixtures etc. Was trying to find the details because it's quite interesting (that's what QI stands for) but I cant find them at this moment.

    Levers have to be used to be ADA complaint. For those that don't know what ADA stands for, it is Americans with Disabilities Act. Some people with disabilities can not turn a knob but can push down a lever.

    Could you use this tool to unblock a chain locked on a door? We have an elderly lady who was stuck on the toilet for Day and a half and we were unable to get to her bc her chain was locked in her day, i was about to stick sending in the opening and unlock the chain but would have been much easier to have something thin and better fit to open it. And I’m looking in to getting something for us to have to be able and ready in case this happens again

    Bill, the handle has very little to do with the age of someone who would need to open a door.. The handle was implemented because of the ADA law. It is to help those with disabilities open said door. P.S. ADA is the Americans with Disability Act.

    • @littlexel
      @littlexel 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would have thought that some who says they have worked with EoD in the military would know that. As it would be difficult to open a door knob if your hand was blown off by them nasty ol' terrorists.

    Got one of these and keep getting failures to open. It seems in the US your handles must all come with a hook inwards towards the door which seems to catch the hook of the tool. In the UK the handles are straight and smooth in the main. So the tool pulls the handle to just about open and slides right off the end. Leaving one very frustrated me on the other side of the locked door. Every damn time.

    America is a funny funny place when it comes to security. I have yet to see a door you can shim, and yet to see a door where you can wiggle something under it. Here the frame always covers the locking bolt, and the door always open inward to the secured section. That way you also don't slam a door into the face of someone standing in the stairwell.
