I came out at 59, I lost my parents, spouse, and children. I think it's love, loving the image of the body more than the person. The parents that support their child and go through rejection and condemnation, that is unconditional love, that is loving like God loves.
Ballroom culture is everything! It has shaped Queer culture today and influenced pop culture in so many ways, that we owe so much respect and admiration to the Houses and the individuals who are Ballroom culture. It brings me joy to see how Ballroom has been showcased in recent years, from Pose to Ballroom vogue legends going on tour with famous musicians and teaching them choreography. Ballroom is international. We have Ballroom houses here in Newcastle, England and I can’t wait until I get to be apart of it in some way. I can dream!
There is a fantastic documentary called " Love Is In The Legend" its online. Many years ago i got to see Willie Ninja vogue at a Barbara Tucker party and i'll cherish that memory forever.
If I'd discovered this stuff as a confused kid instead of buying into toxic masculinity to compensate, and the injuries incurred from overdoing martial arts and the gym, I'd probably be a much healthier person these days than i am.
2020/2021 it breaks my heart to see how family and people can kick a child out on the streets and not accept a child just because of something they desire in their hearts. It’s not a choice, it’s life, not a way of life but life. I’m so glad the world is changing but we still have a long way to go and I love this story I just heard. Thank You for explaining to those that simply don’t know 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
I first Found this on the TED app, but only the audio was working and I couldn’t see the video. I am so glad I found it here on TH-cam. It was amazing and thanks so much for making it!
I’m so joyful to realize where one of my favorite expression of dance developed. Never realized it’s roots. Thank you for your introduction to this culture
What a wonderful story. You bring a child into the world..you are given no guarantees , only the innocence of a baby that need your unconditional love. House and ballroom is what family is all about. Loving guidance form productive people that call you family.
This is fantastic Ted Talk. They are explaining how community really shows up to take care of each other when biological family has pretty much disowned you.
Madonna went to the Ballroom, Jose of The House of Xtravaganza auditioned for her right there at the Ball, he and Luis also helped Choreographed the dance for the video, they both went on Tour with her and also the Vogue video came out in 1990, Paris Is Burning came out in 90 or 91.
Ballrooms and houses culture is SO beautiful and needed, and sadly I think in many countries like mine (which is in Latin America) they haven't existed or at least have been very unusual... Thank you for all you've done Ronald. ❤️🌈
All I can say is it is every single one of any of the parents loss, these amazing young people didn't deserve thier parents? No, the parents did not ever deserve them.
So often conversations about queerness revolve around the horrors and discrimination. That is obviously important to discuss, but it is really cool to see the art forms and accomplishments of queerness alongside it
I'm very curious to know how many voguers in the ballroom scene are professional dancers. I get the impression that a lot of them do it for fun, but the level of artistic / athletic / gymnastic prowess of even many beginning voguers is just Olympic! I'd be paralyzed if I tried 90 percent of those moves myself. ;-)
Looking to do a Podcast interview -no judgments, no belittling, etc with anyone who can explain the history and give some insight into the Ballroom Culture to us outsiders, if this request in any way upsets the host of this video please just delete. There are people who would like to know more than what wiki and a few TV shows tell and show us. you can check my listener's numbers on Talkshoe to see that it won't be a waste of your time & energy to allow me this interview. Closed mouths do not get fed that is why I am asking!
@@Sklard thank you but this has been a brick wall so I will leave it alone I tried all avenues (e-mailing people, posting a special podcast episode, etc.) and that is all I can do as an outsider at least I tried, I can live with that, thank you again for replying
@@jarvellwilliams8393 Sir, the fact that you're the only one to comment on my "petty critique" means ...im right. You don't have to cape for the brother I said it was a good in fact I said GREAT telling the brother to slow down isn't a negative STOP IT... so please excuse yourself "Mr Smart guy"
I will never understand how a parent can so easily kick out their child for being themselves.
then you need to read more

When you said you were a social worker I almost cried. You’re one of the few genuine social workers I’ve listened to.
Sincerely.
Im not part of the lgbtq but I still felt inspired by this people. They know themselves and I'm proud of them.

What an amazing show I'm so proud of how far the LGBT community has come from and how much the ballroom culture has helped us 😍😍

This is fantastic Ted Talk. They are explaining how community really shows up to take care of each other when biological family has pretty much disowned you.
Thank you for educating me on this subculture❤. The dancers' movements were poety in motion

Watch Paris is burning, and POSE. It’s Paris is burning that broke the barrier.

Wonderful, Thank you. So much creativity and talent.
There is nothing wrong with Angel but a colossal failure of the people who gave him birth because they aren’t parents.
I looooove this! Finally vogue on Ted! 👏👏👏
Beautiful knowledge, thank you for sharing. Keep saving lives

In Baltimore, Odells was our ballroom show on Monday nights.
You know if you belong.
I remembered Odell's! LOVED IT !
We dont have a ball room scene in baltimore anymore ....i wish i could have went to odells
and Bunns on Thursdays, and the Paradox on Saturdays. Great times
Very interesting and incredibly informative! The mention of ballroom culture in a glowing review of Leikeli47 's album Acrylic brought me here. :-)
My favourite album find of 2019, lucky to see her at Birmingham pride last year too.
How has this only got 50k views.......!
Good job Ron!
When you come for the ted talk but stay for the dance show.
Great way to state history of ball room
That's why everyone should watch the FX series POSE which will revive the exact things he said
thank you
This is amazing!
So much talent right there!

I wish I had walked "Realness" when they asked me but I was too busy being in love with hip-hop to even consider it
Wow! thank you for sharing

Can't believe I heard of House Music long before I knew what it meant

... I wish he would just breathe a bit and slow down. The story was great on its own. Great presentation.
I think he did a great job. If you got the message there's no need to be critical about petty behaviorisms.

This was amazing, and TEDx does not know how to film or light dance. All of these angles and only one has the dancers not on the dark.
The story reminds me of the show ‘pose’
I love this
VOGUE IS LIFE
Could have shown other styles Like Pop Dip Spin/ Old Way and New Way The Original forms of Vogue.
The Rhythm Of Aus nah cuz those are the stereotype forms of voguing that Madonna basically white washed so I’m glad he showed them what Voguing is NOW
They never touched the old way, but actually I’m glad he only did femm lol keep it sacred
