Hi! Thanks for the video, it's a very interesting technique. I'm learning flute right now and I really like exploring the possibilities of the instrument. I tried sing while playing and becomes difficult to find the right key in my singing with the notes of the flute, but this is because I tried with some hard or high notes. I will keep the last recomendation, I mean start singing in low notes or easy notes. I'm really grateful with this channel, greetings from Argentina :)

I use it as a pre-warm up and I can definitely say, the result comes immediately I'm not particularly interested in control it, but i can say that it really works, one thing you can try is mix flutter tonguing with it, as pre warm it's also a good call

I have been playing flute seriously for many many years and I noticed that I got light headed after just doing this a short while. I think it’s because I am using double the air. Part of the reason it might help so much, in my theory, is that it improves your air support and supply out of necessity...very interesting. Also...flutter tonguing while singing while playing notes.. that’s crazy. I’m gonna try it
OMG lol @leah Miller don't hurt yourself doing that I'm kind of worry now lol. let me explain, in my knowledge there's two kinds of flutter tonguing one is with your throat and the other is with your tongue indeed, the flutter tonguing with the tongue is more percusive and it's the kind that i own. if your flutter tonguing is with your throat i dont recommend that because i dont think it's possible, but if your flutter tonguing is with your tongue indeed you can try that, but be patiente and go easy with yourself and go through it note by note and yes it will require a good support to nail it .i'm sorry for my english i hope you understand that. please be careful and take care.
Yes it really helps to use this technique, either singing into the flute (same note as the one you're playing) or just shaping the mouth internally as if you were singing that note. It really helps with all wind instruments, I have used this with clarinet as well. But flutter tonguing and singing into the flute is very good for warm up as someone else mentioned. It develops better air support too. I also noticed another benefit. When I'm singing as I play the flute, I have to anticipate the exact pitch of the note I'm going to be playing, so I can sing it right when I play it. This helps my mind to memorize the exact pitch of each note, so "muscle memory" can be developed quicker. I'm currently learning to play a Native American flute in a minor pentatonic scale, so this helps me memorize the pitches of each finger since I'm more accustomed to playing in the major scale. I think it would help with learning any wind instrument, to sing along while playing.
Oh yes, after awhile the tone goes back to before, have to sing into the flute again. It's like breathing in helium gas and talk, after awhile the helium voice disappears. LOL
Simply amazing! I play the Chinese bamboo flute, and it works just the same. My teacher plays the bamboo flute all his life and he’s never heard this, but the improvement is so significant he now wants to give it a try too haha

Fun fact: I always wanted to learn how to do this...Without realizing I was already unintentionally doing it from time to time. I would occasionally get remarks on it during my juries in college. Haha! But after I learned how to control it, I've hardly ever used that technique at all. I have always gotten pretty good marks on my tone though! Its interesting to think that might have helped me all along.
This definitely helped me out! I was having a break down because my tone sounded bad especially in the higher register, but after using singing in my flute for a bit my tone actually improved 😄
My former flute teacher taught me this method of gaining good tone! She was an amazing tutor but I had to give up because she moved 😭 I was already travelling about 75 miles for my lesson, but she moved over 100 miles away!

My band teacher in high school had always told us to imagine your singing the notes. Instead of the Bb concert scale sounding harsh like tah tah tah it sound more connected like ah ah ah or do re mi fa so la ti do. And he tells us to transfer that to the rest of our playing as well. My tone has definitely improved a lot since junior high, although I remember a substitute complementing my tone back in grade 9 (last year of junior high). I plan on learning flute soon, I’ll probably buy a second hand one from a local music store. It’ll be cheaper, especially since I’m still a student. I already play bass clarinet and tenor saxophone. I do play soprano clarinet as well, but I haven’t played it much since grade 7. I have my own clarinet but the keys stick and it’s very out of tune and hard to play. I’m looking into buying my own bass clarinet before I graduate high school though.
I love this! I can’t wait to start singing in my flute. I have a somewhat unrelated question, can you tell me where you got the sound tiles that I see behind you? I noticed that they are nice looking and create a nice pattern on your wall ( I was worried they would make my studio ugly) and I’m wondering if they work, too? Thank you Amelie.
Ya and you can check it out at foambymail.com they have a Canada and USA warehouse. I love them and they come in lots of colours. I use 2 tine strips of double sided command strips on the top corners of each tile and the hold great. Just search wedge or simply acoustic panels. You can buy a 48pk or 24pk of 1inch thick for very cheap. They work very well. Look up the patterns you should use to cancel out sounds. Hope that helps. Also be sure to watch Monday’s video!

Yes, just tried humming into my wooden flute and I'm making a much louder and better sound. It's helped my embouchure a great deal. Thank you.
