This is - BY FAR - the best embouchure video on youtube. I'm teaching myself how to play a bansuri. I've been struggling for months. And in 3 minutes you correct all 3 of my issues. THANK YOU!!!!
I have been playing the flute for about three months, and I was having so much trouble getting those high notes to sound clear. After watching this video, I realize that I was moving my upper lip all the time and not my bottom lip. 1,000 thank yous 💓
Wow. This video could transform my playing. I'm a competent hobbyist level flute player, but I never actually learned the mechanics of how to produce tone, I just honked on my sisters' flute until something happened, and then I just did more of that, with no idea about harmonics, I just blew harder and got the flute to play higher notes. Worked in rock and roll.. Your demonstration of the jaw versus the lip, just opened a huge window. I literally had no idea why sometimes I can get a fat, beautiful (to me) tone and then pick the instrument up and sound like a leaky faucet the next moment. Not sure how to erase over 40 years of bad habits, I'm going to give it a go. Wish me luck.
Did you get it? Easy Right? Maybe you have to watch it again! Thats okay! What do you want to learn next? Let me know down below, don't forget to like and subscribe too!
The Flute Channel hello! Could you explain how to play diminuendo. Is the embouchure same for all registers when playing diminuendo and what to do with the lips? Thank u very much and i find your videos very helpful and interesting
I took up playing the flute again - after a 5 decade hiatus - so I'm really a rookie again! What can I do or you suggest how I can strengthen my upper lip muscle - it spasms like an athlete lifting weights and their arms start to shake. That causes changes in the embouchure, position of the lip & tone goes from clear to airy - frustrating! Also, I have a lower denture - what, if any, problems might that create? You teach the things I had forgotten like how to breathe from the diaphram, relax the shoulders, sit up straight at ease, not ramrod stiff. Almost wish I had a corset to help me do that!! Any advice to help with facial strengthening or other tips would be greatly appreciated!
I have noticed you manage to play flute and the aounds ais vibrating, how can do a vibrato in a different tones of notes just like you did. It was awesome to here a sounds you made that is vibrating in a Low ang high pitch.
I'm in 6 grade and when I play the flute i have this every bad sound it come out like the opposite of a wisol so thsi really helped me out so much thank you.❤
When I was playing (I’m 69 yrs old) we were taught that it’s about using the abdominal muscles, rather that the chest so strengthening those muscles is important. I still breath with my abdominals.
I have a bad embouchure where my top lip curls in on to my teeth and my tone is affected by it. Do you have any tips on how to fix it? Every time I try to fix it I can't make a sound.
+Emma Raschke hey emma if you want please find our email on the channel page and if you want send us a picture of your embouchure or short video of a few notes that would be great! But also a mirror is your best friend. - A
I am rethinking my embouchure with my higher notes. My current embouchure I can get good tone with lowest C to 2nd octave G but after that the higher notes end up being too fuzzy and sound weird. If I adjust my embouchure to make my high notes sound great than it destroys my lower register embouchure. Its hard to find a middle ground that will work for both. I'm 2 months in and wondering if my embouchure is wrong and I need to relearn it to get the full range of the notes not just low or high but both. I have small lips and my bottom lip seems to move around embouchure wise on the lip plate. To add to this I think my lips might be dry at times too that might be affecting the ability to get a clean sound higher register wise. Is licking your lips a good solution or should I put lip balm on?
So i learned my embouchure like you explained it. But i watched a few masterclases here on youtube, where they say this is outdated and you should be more flexible, keeping your lips away from your teeth. like making a kiss versus smiling. ie James Galway said that in a video. i am now debating wheather or not i should try to learn the "new" one, since i get pain in my face from the tightness of the embouchure. what do you think of this? thanks in advance :)
+pinkthatsall3 If you experience pain when playing, it means something is not totally right. I don't think you should hold your upper lip tightly on your teeth, I only think you should not push it forward. Personally, when I play, I don't smile nor kiss. I keep a pretty neutral embouchure. I don't pull up or down either. For me, the least amount of effort is the best way to play. Nothing should be tight but not too relaxed either. It needs to be firm. We all have a different constitution so you have to search for what feels good for you. A good teacher could help you find your way. I only give guidelines, not rules. There is no "old way" or "new way", only the way that feels good and sounds good for you. I hope this helps you in your quest for a good sound!
Thank you for the fast reply! Ive just been reading and listening so much about this topic that im kinda confused what to do. But keeping it more neutral and "feeling around" for what is comfortable and sounds good, is a good start i guess! i hope i can find a teacher soon who can guide me further. p.s. im really enjoying your channel, you deserve a lot more followers :)
+pinkthatsall3 Awwww thanks so much. Tell all your flute friends about us! :) Finding a teacher can be a journey. I hope you find the right teacher! My Auntie used to play flute and passed her flute I can’t make a sound. I play clarinet and can also play sax but can’t make a sound on the flute. I heard the flute embouchure is very different to the clarinet embouchure. Do you play clarinet?
I don't, but your right the embourchue is very different from clarinet. Take a quick look at my "Your First Flute Lesson" video it might help in starting fresh with your flute. Hope you get a jumpstart in your new musical journey.
I have a question: after playing my jawbone is cracking, is it something bad with my playing, ambouchure ir something? ( Every Time then Į open ir close mouth it cracks!)
i cant get the note out of those little last two buttons ( the one that looks like a comma and the other that looks like the letter "P" looking down before the two last round ones). What am i doing wrong? Is my flute broken?
Hi Cindy! You might have a leak in the pads or might just need a readjustment on the mechanism. I would take it to a music repair technicians at your local music shop, If you have one nearby.
I’m confused because I have been learning to play the flute for a year now and I learned to do my embouchure that way, but my band director is making me change everything to a poo like a circle. He’s making me make my bottom lip go forward and my flute to roll out more. Also opening my teeth wide open. Can you help?
+The Flute Channel thank you so much! at first I didn't know what was making the sound so I tried touching it with my finger nail (I will always regret doing this) as I was touching the pads with my fingernail nothing pretty much happened but all I could hear was like popping and stickiness (it's so hard to explain!) the sound was so overwhelming lol I made me not wanna play:(
Oh my! Well first, don't touch the pads with your fingers. Here are the main things you can do right away. 1: before you play make sure you haven't had anything sweet for at least 2 hours. 2. Rinse your mouth before playing with water. - Brush your teeth lightly if you can - 3. When your finished playing make sure to clean the inside of your flute, be sure not to clean the pads. What your trying to do by cleaning the inside of your instrument is to get rid of any excess moisture so they don't interact with your pads and mechanism. Will also do a video soon about this and a few other tips.
+Karely Ponce have your teacher look at it. Something could be wrong with the key itself. you should alternate your thumb from the B flat to key to the B natural (the long key connected to the B flat on your thumb) a bunch of times. Something could just be sticky. When you dont put your thumb on your playing a b natural or c depending on exactly what your doing with other fingers. The culprit is most likly a screw above the B Flat thumb, have you band director take a look.

I’m in the same situation and this too really helped!
I play a b flat (one octave) to get my tone right
the flute is hard to learn... but playing it with a broke arm is so much harder
It can be for sure. Stay healthy and be careful!
Thank u so much for this, I have been wanting to try playing the flute but I had no idea how. This really helped. 😊
Do you have any exercises for increasing my air support? I find I run out of breath all the time

Do you know if the flute fingering has similarities with clarinet or sax?
It's a little bit different, but I would argue its a bit more simpler.
Hallo ik wil graag zien hoe steek je de dwarsfluit in elkaar
My Auntie used to play flute and passed her flute I can’t make a sound. I play clarinet and can also play sax but can’t make a sound on the flute. I heard the flute embouchure is very different to the clarinet embouchure. Do you play clarinet?

I look like I’m smiling when I play and heard it can mingle with the tone and as far as I’ve seen it does seem to change my tone a bit
I have a question: after playing my jawbone is cracking, is it something bad with my playing, ambouchure ir something? ( Every Time then Į open ir close mouth it cracks!)
Maybe your embouchure is too tight? It could probably be fixed by relaxing it but maybe you should see a doctor if it keeps cracking constantly
سلام من از ایران هستم
سپاس از آموزش فلوت
Hello thanks from your teaching
I'm from Iran
Can you do a complete guide to making All State for Flutists? I want to get ahead of my competition
We're working on one! Stay tuned!
i cant get the note out of those little last two buttons ( the one that looks like a comma and the other that looks like the letter "P" looking down before the two last round ones). What am i doing wrong? Is my flute broken?
You could have a leak. A small fix at a music shop. If you can take it to a band repair shop they could take care of it.
Waittt you have merch ?
Yup Teespring and my own beginner flute method over at musogy.com
Is it the same with bamboo flute?
Similar, but i'll be doing a series about it very, very soon.
I just started playing, but my notes are always too high
when i put my thumb on the thumb button I can't make a noise and when I don't put my thumb on it I can make a noise why?
+Karely Ponce do you have a flute from school or a personal one?
Thank you
I can play A but I can’t play G and F. What do I do
Hi Cindy! You might have a leak in the pads or might just need a readjustment on the mechanism. I would take it to a music repair technicians at your local music shop, If you have one nearby.
