As a Filipino, this was once told by my parents.
An estimated of 40,000 South Vietnamese fled to Philippines thru fishing boats. They were scared, begging not to return. Some of them became Filipino citizens, some of them returned or lived to another country 20 years later. Not a fun time for both sides.
They mostly are Chinese who illegally lived in South Vietnam. They are not South Vietnamese.
I'm gonna be graphic here so please be warned. One time, when I was a wee eight year old, I found a big book about the stories of refugees from all over the world ( this book mainly came from my realtives since most of them work at humanitarian organizations). One of them told the stories of refugees from the vietnam war and boy....it was not a pretty read. Mainly because there is rampant cannibalism ( an it didn't help that they go in on those boats. One story I recalled is that when one even hoarded a human leg even when they got back to the Philippines. Someone even got into details about it that I stopped reading entirely. Bánh mì was first created in Saigon/Ho Chi Minh City! The baguette was first introduced to Vietnam in the 1850s. It was initially a luxury as imported wheat was expensive. But when WWI came around, because of the presence of many French soldiers, local bakers were motivated to use inexpensive rice flour to bake bread, which allowed baguettes to become a staple for the locals. Though the sandwich didn't become a thing until the 1950s when Vietnam was partitioned between North and South, and a million people from the north moved to the south. Two of these Northern immigrants, Lê Minh Ngọc and Nguyễn Thị Tịnh, are credited with opening a small bakery in Saigon that became the first bánh mì shop. It quickly spread.
The thing about the declaration of independence of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam is that Americans initially supported it! Hồ Chí Minh invited several people in August 1945 to contribute their ideas toward his Declaration of Independence, and that included some American OSS officers. Lieutenant colonel Archimedes Patti said the wording of Minh's declaration reminded him of the US's own Declaration of Independence. So naturally the Americans were like "Heck yeah, Vietnam is free! FOLLOW YOUR HEART"...until France was like "We're Allies, remember?"

Yeah. One thing that people tend to forget is the absolute massive support the North Vietnamese Army got from the USSR and China. The soviet gave the NVA ak-47 and AKM in the early 60’s while the south Vietnamese were still using M-1 garand and m-14. In the late 60’s the NVA got S-75 Dvina and S-125 Pechora and 9k32 Strela MANPAD. Not to mention thousands of tanks and IFV, multiple squadrons of MiG 21 and MiG 19.
Yeah, and how does that compare to what the South got and what the US had back then? Give some perspective so stupid people won't give you a like. Yeah and the NVA all got AK and what not. Fun fact about South Vietnam's anthem: South Vietnam's anthem was originally composed as March of the Students by Lưu Hữu Phước, a SOCIALIST, in 1939. It would become the anthem of the Vanguard Youth in 1945, who would join the Viet Minh. It was adopted as the national anthem of State of Vietnam in 1948, when it was renamed to Call to the Citizens. Lưu Hữu Phước made a strong criticism against the Saigon regime's use of the song. In 1949, he made a protesting letter, which the communist radio broadcaster Voice of Vietnam broadcasted his criticisms. In 1956, the lyrics were revised by Ngo Dinh Diem. After the Saigon regime fell, the original version of the song became the official version played in the reunified Vietnam.
And speaking of Laos, friendly reminder that the US dropped more than 2.5M tons of ordnance on Laos during 580,000 bombing sorties, equal to a planeload of bombs every eight minutes, 24 hours a day, for nine years. Making Laos the most heavily bombed country per capita in history. And the Laos flag doesn't have any communist symbolism! The white disc represents the power of the people, the red is the bloodshed, and the blue is prosperity. Cuba and Laos are the only two current communist states with flags that don't have communist symbolism.
Also fun historical side note: The CIA gave tacit support for Diem to quote "skew the result". What they were expecting is for him to nudge the result in his favor to win the election, instead the man absolutely RIGGED it 97% totally real in favor of him.
The thing is when Lưu Hữu Phước wrote the song it was called "La Marche des Étudiants" in 1939 for a student club in Trương Vĩnh Ký (Petrus Ky) now is Lê Hồng Phong Highschool, at that time Communist wasn't really a thing in Vietnam. When the Prime Minister Nguyễn Văn Xuân picked this song in 1948 as for its cativating meaning not for opposition political belief. As in 1949, Lưu Hữu Phước went North and start to complained for copyright violation. He was only met with ridicules and mockeries. After 1975, he cleaned up his plates and his legacy. And for me as a South Vietnamese in Saigon, I would never hear that song the same again :) It's strongly advised NOT to sing it in public.

How is this any way accurate? First of all North Vietnam didn't even outfought the American on the battlefield, they simply cease most military operation and waited until most of the US were gone. Second, what is this racist take? The north weren't some poor uneducated farmer fighting with makeshift weapons. They were professional well-trained soldiers, with state of the art equipment and vehicles, they were also very well supplied.
@@saviet4222 The north was not as heavily equipped and armed like the south, the soviet union wasn't really interested as u.s with south vietnam. The u.s also supported the pol-pot and china fight Vietnam which was quite self explanatory until the Viet Cong liberated them. Both of your takes are wrong because if they were as equipped and armed as their american antagonists then they would not resort to guerilla warfare or camouflage. And the "state of the art" weapons were nothing but bamboo booby traps, I.E.Ds and a bunch of soviet firearms from the 50s and 60s. The u.s also dumped so much explosives that Vietnam is more bombed than any other country in WW2.
@@Thigamabob Bro, you are clearly have not done enough research on the topic. What am I referring to is the event of 1975, where it was strictly between South Vietnam and North Vietnam. The PAVN were very well supplied by the Soviet and operated a modern army in their final attack. They fielded hundreds of T-54s which alongside the T-62s were the main tank used in Soviet Army until the 80s. The T-54 were the equivalent of the US main battle tank at that time, the M46 Patton. South Vietnam "tanks" were only some lightly protected armored personnel carriers. They also have the famous Sa-75 anti air missile, one of the most advance SAM system during that decade.
They also has access to very powerful modern heavy artillery like the 130mm M46 (which is still being used in Ukraine) and the 122mm D-74 which outranges anything the US and ARVN has at that time in Vietnam. The Ak-47 and type 59 firearms was an advance and formidable weapon in combat.
When do you think the M-16 was made? They were also 50s and 60s firearms. Your knowledge about the war is clearly very limited and derive rather not from historical texts but pop cultures and entertainment. People keep talking about stuff like bamboo sticks which is cool and all but was limited in effectiveness. What was more deadly in greater number was the amount of anti-personnel mine that they also supplied with.
Furthermore, North Vietnam also technically lost the guerilla war. By the 70s they had all abandoned guerrilla tactics and the war become much more conventional as the US were withdrawing. In 1968, in a desperate last ditch effort to achieve final victory, North Vietnam committed the entirety of the VC organization in the attack. The results? Utter annihilation, 80% if their forces were wiped out. Their staging area, HQ and communication lines were all exposed and subsequently destroyed by the ARVN. The defeat was so devastating that in the VC HQ Directive 55 it contains the line, "Never again and under no circumstances are we going to risk our entire military force for just such an offensive."
They suffered enormous amount of losses conducting guerrilla warfare against the US and the ARVN with very little gain. After 1968, the North lost all their foothold in the South. They were only able to regain some of it back( about 10%) after the failed 1972 eastern offensive with a conventional army.
From that point on, the VC( the guerrilia force known as the National Liberation Front) ceased to be the major belligerent in the war and was shadowed by the more conventional army Branch of North Vietnam, the PAVN.
And during 1975, the ARVN was forced to defend the entire 700 miles long front with limited ammunition, fuels and spare part. It was a massive logistical issue. They also did not have enough strength to muster the airpower necessary in order to conduct their operation according to the army doctrine, thus greatly reduce their effectiveness in the field. They were no match for the professional army that the North has in 1975.
Also, the "VC" did not liberate Cambodia, it was the PAVN. The VC or NLF was dissolved after the war ended. Also funny thing. Do you remember the Ho Chi Minh Trail? The supply route into the South that ran through Cambodia and Laos? Well you see, Cambodia was a sovereign country. They did not like how North Vietnam was taking advantage of their territory and jeopardizing their neutrality status. They demanded that North Vietnam would cease all military activity in their border to which North Vietnam did not take very kindly. They then decided to partner up with the Khmer rouge and help defeated the Cambodian government during the Cambodian civil war which allowed Pol Pot to take over the country.
Funny how everyone acted like the Khmer Rouge just spawned in and the Vietnamese recognize the evil of the regime so they decided to liberate Cambodia. Vietnam only attack Cambodia later because they were raiding South Vietnam and killing Vietnamese civilians.
@@Thigamabob Wait, im just wondering. How did you think thw US fought the VC? The jungle does not provide advantage to one side or the other. The VCs have as much trouble with the tree speaking english/southern vietnamese as much as the American and ARVN did. The US did not use conventional tactice either, they sent out small patrol to conduct ambushes, hit and run, recon and disruption just like the VC did.
The jungle provides an advantage to those who are there first who set up ambushes and holes before hand. Along with the utility of using traps and FOBs, the NV had an advantage. It’s like saying a desert provides no advantage, but having one group already established bunkers, pits, fortifications, etc.
Here in Czechia we have a huge Vietnamese minority probably displaced by the war and they are very cool

America beat the Communist Vietnamese on every single battle. After America left your country got taken over by the Communists only because the Democrat Congress cut off aid to the south while the Soviets and Red Chinese gave ample military aid to the Vietnamese communists.

I wouldn't be surprised if they're a 1st world country in 30 years looking at how they're developing and improving everything. @@Francois_the_notable stereotypes are simply just things that the outsiders find the easiest to identify when discovering a new place. If I had a nickel for every 20 year long military occupation we’ve had that’s failed, I’d have 2 nickels, which isn’t a lot but it’s strange that it happened twice.
You could argue that the US Empire militarily occupies Japan, South Korea, the European Union, even their own people. And they certainly tried and continue to try to militarily occupy Latin America.
@@Yet.Another.Rapper.KiG.V2 I see your argument and for the most part I'm inclined to agree, the only thing I take issue with is the fact that the countries you named aren't obligated to join America's wars. Of course on many occasions they did, but overall when a country would join It'd be because they had something to gain themselves (French colonial influence in Vietnam or British oil interests in Iraq for example). To be clear that doesn't make it ok, but to put blame squarely on America may run the risk of ignoring the misdeeds of her allies. Of course the East was just as imperialist and it perhaps wouldn't be so very far to suggest the the Soviet-Afghan war was the Soviet's Vietnam (if you'll indulge my over-simplification). I'm British and I think it's quite important to recognise that regardless of which economic system you may personally support, there was no real benevolent side in terms of foreign policy. Neo-imperialism is and was never unique to one side. Vietnam is a shining example of a country that managed to both establish a singular state through the squabbling's of the East and West but then crucially also managed to achieve and maintain a fiscally independent economy to a much larger extent than say North Korea. That sort of resilience is inspiring.
@SPEECHBUBBLEFISH I agree that America's allies--although I'm inclined to suggest they are in some ways akin to vassals than truly independent peers--have their hands plenty dirty, and their own interests they seek to maintain. While Japan as an example hasn't been mobilized into direct warfare by the US, they have begun re-militarizing as the US intends to use them as the second line of cannon fodder in a war against China (first line being Taiwan). Hopefully it will never come to that.
I disagree that all sides are committing imperialism. To use your example, the Soviets were asked to intervene in Afghanistan by Afghanistan's socialist government, the country was under attack from the Mujahideen that had been mobilized by US to destroy them.
I love ur videos 😂
0:40 “communism has never worked” mfers when i ask them to at least consider that the USA’s (most powerful country in *the world* right now) non-stop war, both culture wars and military wars, *may* have at least skewed the results of how successful socialism had been in those countries: 🤯
