The video reminds me of my grandfather's story. He participated in most of the battles in Vietnam: France, America, China my grandfather was present. He was born in a family with 3 brothers, but once the French army exploited them to build plantations for them. Two of his brothers were shot and buried together with other Vietnamese, my grandfather was lucky to escape. Since then he joined the army with his medical knowledge he was made a military doctor he had met people who lost their arms and legs which are probably scary images to everyone but for him it was too much normally, he meets every day, every month, every year. At present, to save a life is still difficult, my grandfather has to save nearly a dozen people with very bad conditions. All 3 were won, he was lucky to be back with his family, with my father. After the end of the war he traveled around the country to cure people and died proud.

The statue of the woman at 0:11 is the Vietnamese heroic mother Nguyen Thi Thu. Mrs. Thu is the mother with the most children and grandchildren who sacrificed themselves in both the wars against the French and the Americans: 9 sons, 1 son-in-law, and 2 grandchildren. The monument has depicted the image of Mother Thu that is hugging her children. It developed her sentiment toward her children, a deep family with love. The statue was built to pay tribute to hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese heroic mothers whose children sacrificed for the country and mother Nguyen Thi Thu is the symbol.
P/s: The title Vietnamese Heroic Mother (Vietnamese: Bà mẹ Việt Nam anh hùng) is a Vietnamese title of honor awarded, or posthumously awarded, to mothers who have made numerous contributions and sacrifices for the cause of national liberation, national construction and defense, and the performance of international obligations.

With the Sino-Soviet feud, Vietnam, which pursues pragmatism, began to decide to develop closer diplomatic relations with the Soviet Union-because the Soviet Union is stronger than China. After Vietnam's War of Resistance Against American Aggression in 1975, Lê Duẩn, the then leader, did not seize the opportunity to concentrate on healing the wounds of the war and recovering and developing the economy. Instead, he was carried away by the victory and completely deviated from Ho Chi Minh's line. Lê Duẩn and his gang forced the left-wing socialist transformation in the inner south, relied on the support of the Soviet Union externally, and vigorously pursued regional hegemony in an attempt to piece together the "Indo-China Federation". Under the guidance of this wrong line, while openly opposing China, Vietnam tightened its control over Laos until it launched an armed invasion of Cambodia. What Lê Duẩn and his gang did led to the Vietnamese economy on the verge of collapse, unprecedented isolation in the international situation, and extreme internal and external difficulties.
Vietnam began to expel China crazily, suppressing the normal life of overseas Chinese, which led to a large number of overseas Vietnamese returning to China. On the Sino-Vietnamese border, armed conflicts were provoked, armed men were sent across the border to invade, the border people were injured, boundary markers were knocked down, and the border was encroached, resulting in incidents such as Punianling and Tinghaoshan, and the relationship between China and Vietnam became severe. Tearing up the statement made by the Vietnamese government in 1958 that dongsha islands, Xisha Islands, zhongsha islands and Nansha Islands belong to China, and occupying more than 96% of the islands in China's Nansha Islands.
The war took Yunnan Province and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region of China as two operational directions and was divided into three stages. In the first stage, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China publicly issued a notice to the whole country that it was ready to start fighting back in self-defense, which showed the whole world that China's war against Vietnam was fighting back in self-defense. In the second stage, the Chinese People's Liberation Army conquered Lang Son, a military fortress in Vietnam. In the third stage, the Chinese People's Liberation Army withdrew all its troops from March 6 to March 16, 1979, by alternately covering, clearing and retreating.
On February 17, 1979, the troops of the Eastern Front of the People's Liberation Army quickly entered Vietnam in three ways after shelling. On the afternoon of 17th, the Chinese army set up a circular defensive position in Dongxi, cutting off the road of the Vietnamese troops fleeing south in Gaoping, and surrounded the 346th division of the Vietnamese troops. On February 24th, the People's Liberation Army attacked Gaoping in the east, west and south directions. After seven hours of fierce fighting, it occupied Gaoping in the early morning of 25th.
On February 27th, 1979, the battle against lang son officially started. The offensive troops of the People's Liberation Army took the lead in clearing the Vietnamese army stronghold around lang son. The next day, the Vietnamese army around lang son was wiped out, lang son was besieged by our army, the 308th Normal University of the Vietnamese army was wiped out, lang son was basically in ruins, and more than 10,000 enemy troops were wiped out in the Battle of lang son. In early March, the People's Liberation Army wiped out the Vietnam Army's 346th Division. On March 5th, the Chinese army's east-west line went 40 kilometers deep into Vietnam, and a series of important towns in northern Vietnam were conquered. Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, was completely exposed under the nose of the People's Liberation Army, and its strategic goal had been achieved.
On March 5, 1979, Xinhua News Agency issued a statement, announcing that the effect of self-defense and counterattack against Vietnam had been achieved, and the Chinese border guards began to withdraw their troops. At 22: 20 on March 15th, the last military vehicle returned to Chinese territory. On March 16th, China announced the completion of its withdrawal, ending the self-defense counterattack against Vietnam.

Objectively it's insane what Vietnam went through in a span of forty years.
    - 1940-1945: French occupation's end nears, Japanese invade French Vietnam and occupy it.
    - 1945-1954: Viet Minh (precursor of Viet Cong) forms, and fights a bit against Japan (Before the Japanese leave, they arm the Viet Minh) then they proceed to fight France. Ends war with spectacular fashion by humiliating France by destroying a major army in Dien Bien Phu
    - 1954-1965: Mid-intensity civil war in South Vietnam between pro-Communist and anti-Communist forces
    - 1965-1973: All-out war between Viet Cong, North Vietnam and allies (Soviet Union, China) versus U.S., its allies (Australia, South Korea, etc) and South Vietnam, US wages massive bombing campaign as well as use of chemical warfare against the Viets, inflicting massive loss of life
    - 1973-1975: U.S. withdraws, brutal civil war ends with Communist victory
    - 1975-1979: Brief respite but then Cambodian genocide happens, Khmer Rouge genocides their own people and then wages war against Vietnam. Former ally China invades Vietnam to punish them, but Vietnam fights it off and continues to destroy the Khmer Rouge and liberates Cambodia, stopping the genocide.
So Vietnam in the course of forty years fought Japan, France, itself (South Vietnam v. North Vietnam), the United States and its coalition of allies, then finally Cambodia and China, and essentially won all of them.
Edit since people in the comment are saying the Vietnam War wasn't a "civil war'.
ARVN (Army of the Republic of Vietnam) and the Republic of Vietnam lasted 11 years against the NLF (National Liberation Front, Viet Cong was their nickname) and later elements of PAVN (Peoples' Army of Vietnam) from 1954 to 1965, and more than a million South Vietnamese served in the territorial units, ARVN and other security forces from 1954 to 1975. For reference, ARVN losses were 250,000-300,000 dead and 1.1 million wounded, American losses were 58,000 dead, 300,000 wounded.
It was for all intents and purposes a civil war even before the Americans directly intervened.
Also to all the Vietnamese people i'm literally praising Vietnam's War Record, I'm personally very interested in visiting Vietnam someday, probably Hue/Da-Nang area besides Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

A bit of interesting history. Before the Vietnam War, before the French Indochina War, Ho Chi Minh lined himself more with the American government than the Soviets. He even helped draft the first Vietnamese Constitution that literally takes the first line of the Declaration of Independence. It was only because we sided with the French and funded their war to stop the growth of Communism and eventually starting a war with them ourselves that caused them to seek assistance from the Soviets and the Chinese.
Further that bonking of China from Vietnam was the Sino-Vietnamese War of 1979.

War of aggression is like playing a bet. You spend a lot of money. The more you lose, the more you will want to win back. Thousands of young Americans died in Vietnam. Sometimes they die for no reason. They spent months fighting to defend a hill, only to hear orders from their superiors to retreat. It was worse.

I see most people know about China, the US and France that tried to invade Vietnam and failed, but almost no one talked about the 3 invasions of Vietnam by the Mongols. At a time when the Mongols were the most powerful country in the world, they invaded all of Asia, and even Europe. But when it came to Vietnam, a country thousands of times smaller with a sparse army, the Mongolian army failed 3 times in a row and finally gave up. I really don't know why people don't talk about it a lot when the only two countries that won Mongolia are Japan and Vietnam, while Japan relies entirely on luck and Vietnam doesn't.

I have to say Mongol have failed since they deemed Vietnam as a small one so they did not use their whole force to invade us. All three invasions you said, Mongol did invaded Vietnam, but they were busy with other business in the same time. Their army was seprepated, Vietnam just defeated A PART OF THEIR WHOLE FORCE(They have used 40% of their soldiers, i guess?). But still THREE TIMES indeed, what a heroic and proud thing to say.
But that invasion to Japan, i think its ironically fight since their whole squad have sunken in the sea thanks to the seastorm.

As a Vietnamese, i can tell you it did not just end there. After we overtook the Southern government, we had to fight with Pol Pot (in the war known as Southwest Border War) , and after that, China, aka our ally-in-war, started to invade us (Vietnamese-Chinese Border War). And while all of that was happening, we also had to deal with embargo from the US (which ends in 1995). So in general, we only had 30 years to grow the economy peacefully
Edit: Southwest, not southeast, my mistake

1:23 I think this girl is Hannoi Hannah - Trịnh Thị Ngọ was a Vietnamese radio personality best known for her work during the Vietnam War, when she made English-language broadcasts for North Vietnam directed at United States troops.
Hannah's shows are invariably the same. After the news is an editorial denouncing U.S. escalation of the war. Then a recording by an Asian soprano who sounds as if she's having her ears pierced. Then, Mailbag Time ('write us for the truth, friends')
One of her typical broadcasts began as follows:
How are you, GI Joe? It seems to me that most of you are poorly informed about the going of the war, to say nothing about a correct explanation of your presence over here. Nothing is more confused than to be ordered into a war to die or to be maimed for life without the faintest idea of what's going on.

This whole video is great, but the "you look lonely" meme girl replaced with a Vietnamese girl was the single best part of the vid. I need that picture for research purposes. 😂

The end of the video is actually really sad. For what reason did we really go to Vietnam? All those young boys became scared and traumatized when they came back, not to mention the immense damage and destruction we left behind. For what?
