    Thanks Bloke, I'd never seen cross over before. I was a regular user of both two point and single point slings back when I used to do serious rifle shooting with both small and full bore rifles.

    I have a very neat Australian Omark Sportco M44 with a center swivel and it came with a sling. It took me quite a while to work out what you so capably described. Like you, I'm am definitely dumb enough to use such a thing just to be contrarian, but, in the long run, I won't be getting rid of my single point slings.

    Jeff Cooper introduced the action swivel two point to American shooters in the early 80s after being shown it by a South American gentleman named Carlos Widmann. Cooper added Pachmayr Flush Swivels and a reversed cobra sling. He named it the CW sling in honor of Widmann. He showed it to Creighton Abrams who told him it originated with the British.
    Cooper advocated it for field shooting as it allowed one to loop up while dropping into position. One of his students named Eric Ching refined it further by adding a second strap that stayed attached to the action swivel and slid along the main strap via a metal swivel. The Ching sling could thus be used as a carry strap that instantly transitioned into a support sling.

      @@rslover65 Thanks! I have heard of their high-quality slings, and I use a 1907 pattern for my M1 Garand and M1917 for CMP matches. I find Bloke's demo very interesting and I'm curious if it helps with my shooting. Currently, I don't have a shooting jacket and the butt and sling loop will sometimes slide down during rapid fire.

    • @rslover65
      @rslover65 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jonathanliu3 I picked up a cheap shooting jacket at the CMP games in OH, it has a hook on the shoulder to keep that from happening. Depending on what match you're in you may or may not be allowed to use that. I would recommend the better slings over a military issue one, it does make a difference. Mostly the turner slings are made of wider leather.

    • @BlokeontheRange
      @BlokeontheRange  ปีที่แล้ว

      Slings standing are a big cope and just make you feel tighter without actually objectively doing anything (I stopped doing it standing when I realised this). I've never shot crossover sitting, but if I wasn't allowed a single-point, I would do it that way.

    Does rebuilding your position with every shot not introduce a lot of inconsistency?

    • @509Gman
      @509Gman ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not if you practice consistently rebuilding it.

    • @BlokeontheRange
      @BlokeontheRange  ปีที่แล้ว

      When shooting Target Rifle, not rebuilding your position each time:
      a) is extremely tiring. You're there for 20+ minutes. Much longer if it's 2+15 shots with 3 people per target. Try holding a rifle in the shoulder on a sling for that long. Also you're not allowed to use the magazine and have to occupy yourself with a plotting sheet and keep watching the wind.
      b) results in the sling and butt slipping, introducing a lot of inconsistency.
      Some people just put the butt down on the ground and leave the muzzle pointing upwards at an angle. Some put the entire rifle down (and don't move their elbow or anything else.
