- How To Change a Hayward Pump Seal
A swimming pool pump shaft seal prevents water from leaking along the pump motor shaft. Even the most expensive pool pump has its pump shaft seal fail at some point. As a result, you will see water running down the backside of the pool pump or between the motor and wet head. A leaking Hayward swimming pool pump seal can cause damage to the pool pump motor and also cause loss of pressure in the pool water lines.

I thought you weren't suppose to touch or put any type of lube other than water or water based lubes on the seals.
@@bradsnapp8437 it's ok. Never had any issues. We are talking about the silicone right? If so, get the stuff I suggest because that's the stuff I've used for years with no problems and no call backs because it leaked again. I would say that doing it this way will make your seal last longer.
How critical is it to NOT touch the ceramic sides with bare hands? The pool shop advised wearing gloves although, I can't imagine it's THAT sensitive, but probably not a bad idea either?

Great video! I had been looking for exactly that! Do you have a video explaining what the flinger seal on the motor side does and how to replace it?
A V-ring or flinger protects the shaft bearing by blocking dust and other contaminants. On the hot tub or pool pumps it's just a rubber piece and can be made. Again, its just to block crap from getting too the bearing.
Also, you are not supposed to touch the ceramic part (white part) of the seal; so they say. Oils from your hands contaminate the seal. Nice Video.

Correct, never get any contamination on the seal face. Can clean with denatured alcohol if it does get dirty.

I had a new variable Hayward pump installed as part of a my pool build. The unit began to leak within 4 weeks. The pump was replaced with a new unit as it was under full warranty. The second pump failed within 48 hrs, again pointing to a shaft seal leak as the source of failure. This time the seal was replaced. Within 24 hrs, this fix also failed with water pooling on the floor. Now the Hayward Regional rep is going to take a look at the issue…..hmm quality control I believe is the issue.
I'm guessing you have a salt water pool? Putting the right seal in a pump is key and the silicone helps a lot.
Salt unit has not been turned on, as we are just running the pump to circulate water during winter. Three failures points to issues with seal installation at the factory. The Regional Hayward rep will be here tomorrow….I am expecting a new pump at Hayward’s cost/expense.
@@jamesbradford1815find a video for your pump that shows changing a seal. Also. Get a seal or 2 for backup. Warranty won't always cover it.
Hayward Rep came out on site and indicated they had a production issue resulting in seal failures. The original pump installed Oct 2022 and replacement Dec 2022 were of sequential serial numbers…and were back to back production units. The Rep authorized a third pump, from a different production run, which will be installed tomorrow…so I am keeping my fingers crossed.
I spoke too early. Third pump failed in 48 hrs. There is a production issue here.

Looking for the salt water seal? That would be the best one.

Why is the motor sideways?
lol. Nice caught. It was a customers pump and he turned it sideways for his situation in the pump house. You put it back together the way you take it apart.
