    Most people call these cars unreliable, but if you mod any car they become unreliable. I own a mica red speed 6 and that thing has never left me stranded.

    • @LifeOfTuners
      @LifeOfTuners  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Facts bro, one main thing with them is that you have to maintain it well, and if your modifying you have to use the right parts, do it all right and it is as reliable as any other modified or performance car. The problem is the clowns who jump in think they can push 300whp without High pressure fuel pumps and with out doing oil changes every 3k-5k miles, then they do take a dump, but that's the owners own doing imo

    Love you’re videos. Just bought a speed 6. Previous owner put on a AEM CAI, CorkSport top mount intercooler, high flow catted downpipe and magnaflow catback exhaust. Blow off valve and a swapped motor out of a gen 2 speed 3. Cobb and tuned by freektune. All by the previous owner. Got any suggestions of what I should do next? Imma be upgrading motor mount and installing a oil catch can. But is there any other things I should be focusing on too?

    • @LifeOfTuners
      @LifeOfTuners  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! I'm sure it will, but just gotta check any way, has it got high pressure fuel pump internals? For non engine mods, engine mounts are a good place to start, just make sure you don't get any that are too stiff, I hear that jbr mounts are stupidly stiff (if you want that then cool, but it will ruin a lot of the dailyability of the car) cobb and corksport do some good ones. Perhaps if you want better braking, go with performance pads and rotors, with braided lines. A short shifter and/or solid shifter bushing will make the shift action really damn nice.
      In terms of more power, e85 should give you quite a noticable if you can do that, though then get it 1 step colder plugs and you should be good to go

    • @LifeOfTuners
      @LifeOfTuners  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      BMW's are nutoriously expensive to maintain, luckily for the Speed 6 it's not too bad, generally if you do regular maintenance it won't give you any issues, espically stock, the main things to look out for is timing chain, on these cars they stretch, ($500 to fix + installation) so if your buying a higher milage model, I'd make sure it's been changed.
      Another expensive issues is the turbo seals, if these fail they can make the car smoke a lot, you will need a new turbo ($900 or buy a used one)
      I've done 2 videos on common problems if you want to find out about them

    Sounds a bit biased saying the Subaru is unreliable whilst neglecting to mention that the Speed 6 has some well known and considerable issues of its own.
    In fact that is the major drawback of the car that scares people off, major issues before the warranty period was up or not long after werent exactly uncommon.
    Not to say its terrible, like all cars proper maintainence and being aware of + addressing these issues where possible helps to avoid these problems but id definitely take my chance with a Subaru before i considered one of these. Way more common, way more documentation, spare parts and aftermarket, easier to find good examples, even if the engine explodes into pieces youll be able to source a replacement the same day.
    Plus a proper awd drivetrain.
    The M6S is more unique though and is more fun out of the box.

    • @LifeOfTuners
      @LifeOfTuners  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah true true, though the Subarus are notably less reliable, yes the same thing can be said that treating a Subaru well will make it way less unreliable, but there are more issues, which require you to be even more conscious about. And fair enough, the flat layout will always have inheritent natural problems by design.
      Though yes, way more parts and knowledge, plus they're symmetrical AWD system is top tier

    • @GeneralNOH
      @GeneralNOH 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LifeOfTuners the only common major issue is the head gasket blowing which are avoidable and permanently fixable when they do happen, i wouldnt say theyre notably less reliable at all.
      People get ringland failures from crap tunes detonating and occasionally spun bearings, and the 5 speeds are known to be weak when pushed.
      Theres just astronomically more of them getting around = more reports of problems. For every MPS6 there are dozens of cars with EJs getting around Its also one of the most commonly tuned motors which = problems.
      The MPS6? It was recalled multiple times for multiple issues and there are other common issues that were never recalled, like the stock turbo on it being a steaming pile of shit😂

    • @LifeOfTuners
      @LifeOfTuners  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Though would you rather be replacing a turbo or an engine/trans :/
      Man today I legit saw a Subaru motor being disassembled, it somehow managed to Spin a rod and main bearing at the same time, in conjunction with ringland failure. Obviously that's just one car, thought you'd find it funny though.
      I'll say this, from what I've seen, if you don't treat either of them correctly, the MPS can handle a bit more neglect

    • @GeneralNOH
      @GeneralNOH 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LifeOfTuners Bad turbos can result in engine replacement. Thats only one of the problems, they have weak rods so they have to be tuned carefully as to not put out too much torque too early, weak drive shafts, crap engine and diff mounts, almost all of the earlier models leaked from the transfer case, they are susceptible to rust due to inadequate treatment of the bodywork, VVT can be problematic, timing chains fail prematurely (though most should be replaced by now).
      Its not like you have to replace subaru engines or trans anyway if you are sensible, everyone knows if you want to go for power, get the 6 speed, if you dont want a rod hanging out of the block, tune it properly with supporting mods. change oil and coolant regularly to avoid (you should anyway) to avoid HG issues.
      Yeah as you said just one car; they are super common around here and plenty getting around with 150xxx+ miles with very few issues;

    • @LifeOfTuners
      @LifeOfTuners  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The same can be said for the speeds, the rods aren't really actually weak, it's just if their tuned by someone whose crap, or maintenance isn't kept up, hell you can run 380whp on them safely. even the turbos, run Rotella 5w40, with 3k oil changes, and you won't be blowing turbos.
      There's plenty of people I've heard that run in the high 300's for several years, stock block with no major reliability issues at all. I can't say the same for many Subarus.
      Even in terms of modifying, going over 500whp you'll be wanting to invest in going closed deck, it does take a butt load of money to make high power on. Like on the speeds, the you don't need to touch the heads till going near 800whp, on the 3s, same with the gearboxes.
      But ofc, it's a boxer engine, it's naturally a hindered design from the get go
