Selaginella lepiophylla aka the false rose of Jericho or the dinosaur plant, is one of a kind! Add a shallow amount of distilled water to a bowl and watch it come to life. They do enjoy sunlight to grow so keep it near a window (no direct sun or it can burn the fronds) and prune back any yellowing fronds as it grows to maintain it. Once a month, let it dry out completely to avoid rot and if you no longer want to have it out, you can let it dehydrate and roll back up. This process of drying and watering can be done for up to 7 years!
Do you happen to have any resources about caring for them? I’ve gotten a couple recently and I want to propagate and care for them but I haven’t found any really in depth resources for them like with other commonly kept plants.
The gene that causes the plant to be able to do that is actually in all plants, it’s just usually when they’re in the seed stage. There’s a woman who’s studying this and trying to make all plants (or at least with our food) be able to do this beyond the seed stage! So cool!
Had one of these in elementary school. Took it to school and my teacher let me keep it in the classroom (he had a lot of weird stuff) since I couldn’t keep it at home. Over Christmas break, I left a note that said “I’m not dead.” By the plant because I knew that no one would be there to water it. Came back after the break to find the note and the plant gone. Turns out, the janitor thought it was just some kids trying to hide a dead plant as a joke and threw it away. RIP Jim the Immortal.
We had one. While it can go without water, it also can die for real. How? Idk but ours did. You can’t tell that they’re dead dead unless you try to revive it and it just doesn’t.. lol.
Or if it opens up when you put it in water but it's completely brown, even after hours/days of it sitting in water!!! I had one for YEARS and couldn't figure out why it wouldn't turn green...turns out it was probably dead when I bought it 😅 😔
